Adam is already a great electrician. That is a great reflection on your support and patience and fantastic encouragement. You made work enjoyable for him. I suspect he has also made not only life easier for you but given you so much more in terms of the banter. U good job....good luck to Adam on the driving test. It would be great at some point to see how the extended cables with the DIN rails changed the test results or not. Whenever you get the chance again. Very nice job.

Math Man I’m curious about this too.. the Viking connectors are made for this purpose and are widely used in pre populated electrical fuseboards (wardrobe sized), I couldn’t think of any better connector for the job he needed to do apart from soldering and insulating each one with resinated heat shrink, which by the end would look like a ✊💦. So he made it enclosed, tidy and accessible for maintenance..That kid is leaning how to work at a level of installation execution that I don’t see much around here to be honest.. as for most electricians they’d fill that box with the good old connector block and push the wiring spider web in to close the lid.. would you use a ferrule and crimp 2 wires before putting them into a terminal? if the kid keeps his 👀 well open and puts the same pride into the execution, he’ll be a very good spark. Being an electrician isn’t just about measuring Zs, it’s also an art and if you do it correctly, your testing will always be inside the parameters.. I’d definitely stop a minute to enjoy that skilled work if I opened the lid to check the screws torque on the Viking’s..

I normally only work with one other electrician who works to the same standard as me we have been in the game for 36 years and its its good to see fresh sparks who seem to take some pride in what he does the way your board is wired is what I expect to see when removing the front panel but so rarely do, unfortunately some sparks are animals and in my opinion should not be doing the job I remember my father telling me when I started if you wouldn't do it in your own home don't do it in somebody else's.

I feel like a handy product idea would be flat fronts for old boards. In a situation like this you could leave the old box and DIN rail for the new wiring blocks and then just put a flat front on it so you don't need to take out the old box. Would probably keep everything more organized too since you could land a circuit into the wiring blocks as you take out each breaker.

I was thinking exactly the same. A blanking plate for the old board to cap it off.

Am an Electrician did 14th Edd, then 15th, and 16th refresher with IEE Regs , and have done 100s of Con Unit Changes, various styles from Voltage/Current ELCB/ RCDs , Rewireable/Cartridge/MCB-RCD and now RCBO , have used the DIN Rail connections but for a small installation Line Crimps were ideal, when installed correctly , even for 16/25mm short length. Now everything changes, some Good some Not and the Kit/Tools are Fantastic.

Was just thinking that in-line crimps give a good maintenance-free connection and would fit into a smaller box. Certainly cheaper too.

Nice to see a job done right. When my board was moved due to a garage conversion the sparkle used 5 strips of 30a chocolate block to extend the wiring. Luckily he used a proper box to put them in, pity he didn’t use grommets though. Another good vid. Good luck on the test Adam, relax and you will piss it.

Just a bit of extra cream going forward, mark up the legs of the ring finals so you know which L/N & cpc corresponds. So when you or someone else has to do testing at the dB you don’t have to pull out the legs and mess up the neatness.

So, you've stripped out a perfectly adequate fully functioning consumers unit then replaced it by inserted 50 joints at the start of the field wiring thereby reducing its integrity! Pedantry and excessive use of BS7671 regs have prevailed on this install. Practicality, common sense, and fairness has not.

Not sorry to say this: On the other side of The Channel, right here in the Netherlands, things are connected in a neat way, in pvc pipes running all the way into the case that holds the circuit board. In that unit we tend to have room to leave enough length in the wires so we can always switch them to ANY circuit breaker on the board. If this is not the case, the installation is older than 1960 and most of those aren't existing anymore. Not many fires here caused within the leads, the circuit breaker box etc. If there's fire, it is mostly only because of appliances failing. Not the wires, not the grid, the actual appliances.

Afternoon Nick, nice video. Is that the Ford trail model or have you changed the grill? With the terminal blocks going a bit funny, you could try using end shields and end stops, that should give them a bit of ridigity for larger cables. Have a good weekend.

Nice job guys. You have to be careful with DIN rail mounted terminals. They can be fitted "upside down" on the DIN rail relative to other terminals. This in itself is not an issue. However if the terminals don't have side insulation covers, the exposed metal of the terminal will be in close proximity to the exposed metal of any adjoining terminal that is not "upside down". As you mentioned in the video, a couple of your terminals appeared to not to line up correctly. Edit: I zoomed in on your junction box and it appears to be OK, even though 2 terminals don't line up. You can see that the side insulation of each terminal is on its left hand side. The 2 terminals that are out of alignment are possibly a slightly different model. May be worthwhile confirming for yourself, as video may be deceiving. Keep up the great videos, Kudos.
