Winging It! Boating On A Budget

To move the log burner from the Bow to Midships sounds a simple task, however this is work on a boat and NOTHING is simple. Lets start by fitting the roof collar (that the flue goes through)...
Whilst travelling the inland waterways of England completing DIY jobs on our narrowboat can be tricky at the best of times - with limited tools and no access to the national grid for power tools being two of the major hurdles to overcome. But when we started the task of moving the log burner (no simple task in itself!) I realised I'd forgotten the charger for one of my tools and we only had two cutting discs for the angle grinder. Time would tell if these caused issues or what other surprises laid in store for us...

Oh dear. I'm killing myself laughing because I can understand a Yorkshire accent (well, mostly), but I left CC on, and it can't figure out what is being said. Unintended hilarity, which I'm sure you will appreciate. I'm sure some people will wonder why you put so much effort into a temporary fitting, but it comes down to what my Scottish ancestors would call being "thrifty" (emphatically not "cheap"), which is completely consistent with being a "tight Yorkshireman"--a very respectable world view, I'd say. You may call it "winging it," but I really appreciate the skill behind it.

I might have to watch with the CC on and see what it’s like! Thankyou for the nice words about the work we are doing. 😃

In my opinion, the best way to cut a chimney flue hole is with a jigsaw. Only takes 10 mins, take it nice n slow, no mess, perfect hole. 100% agree with having the stove amidships!

Jigsaw was the other option… but didn’t have any metal cutting blades with me.

Glad to see you filming again! Curious why you would put the chimney in front of that porthole window ?
@WingingItBoatingonaBudget
@WingingItBoatingonaBudget 3 ай бұрын
It’s just how it worked out that where the log burner could go was by the window. The chimney is far enough away so it still lets the light in and the window won’t get hot enough to be a problem.

At the moment we haven't removed the old collar... just sealed the section of steel we cut out the roof over the top of it. (for now).

The flue is far enough away to still let the light through and not close enough to give enough heat transfer to case an issue. And that was the perfect spot for it to go to get the best layout within the boat.

So did u guys ensure there is the extra spacing on the wall plus fire safety board installed /around the porthole & under the heater, to ensure fire safety regulations are being adhered to? Cause one cant just move the heater like that, as the boat wont pass its safety certificate. You risk a fire on the boat as the walls arent properly heat treated

As you’ll see on the next video (next Thursday at 3pm) the fire safety boarding etc gets installed. Rest assured the safety of the boat (and us) is paramount.

@BellaTrix0707 - Dawn and Peter are definitely not newbies - this is their third narrowboat, and they completely rebuilt the first two.

Best to use coach bolts for for the collar. I used them self tappers for my solar panels last year. Quite a few of them have snapped.
