Never underestimate the power that “it could be a lamp” has on how much stuff you have around. It’s probably at least 50% of stuff.

Between the military and post-military defense contracting, I've moved 17 times in 22 years. Some general moving tips: 1) Always start packing earlier than you think you need to. Always. You have more stuff than you think, and less time than you think. I promise. Nobody who's ever moved has regretted being "too" prepared for moving day. Start now. 2) Starting "too early" means you also have time to make packing lists - do this. Not a generic one-word label on a box. Not a weird numbering system. _A packing list._ You will NOT "just remember" that X item is in Y box, you will forget your stupid numbering code, and since you didn't start early, you're going to be tossing random shit in boxes at the last minute with labels that don't match the contents. 3) Always ALWAYS unpack _every single box_ when you get where you're going. Otherwise, the thing you're going to spend HOURS desperately searching for in 6 weeks will have ended up shoved in the back of a closet somewhere, and because you didn't label everything like you were supposed to, it is effectively gone. 4) When you find things during your packing process that you haven't seen in 6 years or have forgotten about owning completely, don't bring them with you. You don't need to drag every piece of crap you've ever owned with you, forever. Sell it, donate it, or toss it. One less box to carry. 5) DO NOT GET A STORAGE LOCKER. No human in the history of modern civilization has ever actually used a storage locker "just for a month, just to help with the move" and neither will you. It's a trap. You're gonna pay that bill over and over and leave your crap there indefinitely because it's less effort than moving it all (again). Moving always sucks. Be smart and make it suck less. I had a fire in my garage last year and taking inventory for the insurance company was a nightmare. I had so many individual items, like spindles and differentials, that the poor adjuster person was completely unable to identify. Ironically stuff like that was also largely unfazed by the fire, but it had to be accounted for. But now I know exactly how much crap I had- over 600 individual items, down to trays of 4, 5, and 6 mm bolts, drive belts, motorcycle pegs, and tiny tires for large scale RC cars.

I just moved from a 4 car garage to a 3 car garage and a separate shop. Your tub progression is spot on. It will take you longer than a year to derandomize those tubs.

If there's any human that deserves a crowd-funded GIANT, fully equipped garage, it is Matt. This garage needs to be on a very large property, that can have its own race track(s).

For insurance purposes I'd do a video inventory with commentary on what the items are and the cost to replace them. The hurricane is what reminded of that as I've lost everything twice from storms on the east coast. Just an idea that's saved me and the adjuster a lot of aggravation.

You can weld pin stand holes in the land speed car. You can slot wheels in the pin stand holes to help roll on the trailer. Pin stands are nice too.

Your move describes my last move down to almost the last detail: the hubris of thinking you have too much time, the panic of realizing you have negative 7 days to deal with your garage, and the profound disappointment of realizing your new, bigger garage is somehow exactly the same size as your last garage. The only substantive difference was the land speed car.

My buddy has been considering moving south to Tennessee. We were talking about it and he just goes “I have a lot of crap”. He’s got several project vehicles and bikes as well as very large machinery like a massive sheet metal break, giant welder, bread roller etc and thinking about moving all of it several hundred miles was very intimidating.

I have had the same experience, we had two tiny garden sheds at the old house, and a whole.36 sq meter shed at the new house (the old house was only 67sq meters in total)... some how I've filled the new shed but the old ones aren't yet entirely empty.

BTDT... Moved at the height of the Pandemic. 250 miles. Moving house was easy. The garage, not so much. Two parts cars, one non-runner, and 5 runners. I had about 10 years worth of "stuff you have no use for, but can't throw out". My mantra became "You take a box, you make it very heavy, and then you put it in the truck". Repeat ad nauseum. Glad you made it.

As you say, the house is easy, I only have three cars and 400 square feet of garage but still a daunting task. I bought and built a couple of tables (on wheels) and realized that it was too many a while back.

Looking at the state of my garage/shop/potting shed- maybe a move is what I need as well. I've got more than a few things I forgot I owned, or don't recall what they belonged to. Most of them car parts. Great channel Matt, keep it up.

This sounds a lot like the move I just did. The progression from organized, sorted boxes to random tubs of stuff that happened to be near a certain location in the garage/basement was the worst, as I knew I’d be unable to find anything in the latter as soon as it went in the truck. I, too, made the mistake of moving myself, but rather than decide to rely on movers next time, I bought a 26’ enclosed racing trailer. In the mean time, I get to use that for the Lemons car.

In 1994 I bought a Husqvarna 610 for off and on road use and discovered that a dedicated supermoto and more dirt bikes, four in two states, was the way to go. All hail the two stroke for off road use.

I helped my dad move his shop years ago. We had the moving van about half loaded when we noticed that it was sitting REALLY low. Checked and yep, it's on the bump stops. So we started unloading stuff until there was some space between the spring and bump stop. Turns out machinery is really heavy.

I had to move about a year and a half ago. Mill, lathe, one working but not road legal car that could go on a separate truck and my project car which was in bits at the time I think. I ended up paying professional movers who had experience with workshops. They were excellent. It took months to unpack everything and the only thing that went missing was the handle on my pan brake which I remember the chap telling me he'd taken off to make it easy to move and he'd put it somewhere safe. It must still be safe somewhere.

I like the stuff to gas analogy. I've been using an adaptation of Parkinson's Law for years. Parkinson's Law is: "work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion." Mine is: "stuff expands to fill the space available." Jack stands for cabinet supports is also awesome. Scissor jacks are also very useful if you want to be able to make fine adjustments. I used them to move a row of cabinets up by a half inch to clear a slightly tall kitchen appliance.

So you can’t throw away paint in California? Can you throw away things that have been painted? I was thinking the outside of those paint tins might need a bit of sprucing up. Maybe several coats of sprucing up. Just wondering…

Last time I moved, I tried selling some of my stuff, but people just laughed, so then I tried giving it away, and most people laughed, but my next door neighbor was as big a pack rat as I am, and even though he admitted that someday he would have to haul it to the dump, that was a problem for future neighbor, and so he took most of it. The rest he helped me take to the dump. He was a good neighbor.

I can so relate to this, it gives me a weird smile..... we planned and booked for one large moving truck, it turned into 3. (47m3 or 1660cu.ft.) And followed the same route of "I have more than enough time" to "the movers are waiting for the boxes and tubs of random stuff. 3 years later and I am still not halfway at unpacking and sorting everything...

ay gorman. on that hill on pronghorn its alot easer to just pull the clutch in and rool down the other water erosion corner that's like in line with the main trail. just one lege instead of being offcamber crawilg down like 4. i haven't been in a while its been super crowded since the pandemic started. if you ride in from the rest of the park you can just ride up past the tool both for the track and get some laps in, by far the cheapest full service track in solcal.

I had to vacate my 2400 sqft shared workspace in less than two weeks. Everything is distributed between my 2 car garage & shed, and my dad's 2 car garage & shed. I share your pain.

I bought my house 10 years ago, I still haven't unpacked all of my random stuff garage bins, and we only fully unpacked the house boxes that were in the basement a few years ago.

I had this exact problem a week ago, had to move out of a massive 4 bedroom house with 2 2car carports and a 2 car shed... the house was a pain to pack on its own. When I got to the shed I was over it ended up just filling horse floats to save time on having to sort it all, 16 full floats of tools and parts for projects, no feking idea where or how I had stored that much but I did,worst bit is I took 4 loads of steel and ally out of my shed to save space moving, nope.

I don't think anyone was in the pool for giant scooter... Also yes I hate how bench top space always gets filled.

you can recycle paint at any paint store in CA it just needs a working lid and label. I photo copied a paint label and printed out 10 copies for 10 cans w/missing labels and they accepted all of them. if the paint is dried out you can take it to the dump.

When I last moved, the removalists said "Who owns 50,000 cable ties, and 50,000 rivets?". I guess I do.... I didn't know how much of every possible consumable i'd amassed, until it was time to get someone to move it all. I see why. You'd see why....They didn't see why.
