I would do the floor of the fireplace in the star tiles and then all the walls in the mustard yellow tiles xx

Regarding tiles and woodburner. Check upcoming legislation re burning things in the home. They are tightening up no end and you will be restricted what you can burn (combination of someone remembering the clean air act exists and then environmental sustainability related policies are driving this). Make sure this is something that works for you before you spend money on a wood burner. Getting the flue in the chimney might be an issue for your house - get this checked and costed early - it might affect the roofing repair too. Check if your tiles are suitable for being around heat. Some are not. It looks like you want subway tiles which are generally crackle glazed - these require sealant over them if they are somewhere they will get wet (i.e. if you wipe soot off them) and also may be vulnerable to blowing off bits of glaze or exploding with heat. The supplier should be able to provide you with this information. Also, I think I got my tiles from the same place - their website is pretty good on this stuff so it might already be on there. i think the starstiles are quite perfect in combination with the yellowtiles. U showed them together in the video and i find it very lovely.

Hey Lucy, just paused the video to make a wee suggestion....why don't you try going to a reclamation yard. They usually have tiles that have been stripped from old properties. You may be able to find some genuine Victorian fire tiles xx

The curtain pole is high to make the window look bigger

I personally think the base and walls of the fireplace should both be the yellow subway tiles 💕

From experience you will need a damp cover paint to sort the ceiling out once the roof is sorted! We had a drippy pipe that stained the dining room ceiling and it always came back through until we caved and got the damp proof paint!

Just paused at the new curtains part, I’d keep the curtain pole high up. It gives the illusion of bigger windows and higher ceilings. You could always get some longer curtains so they reach the floor in the same style as those because they’re really pretty! Oh and I love the mustard tiles 😍 I’d do the walls of the fireplace in those and the star ones on the floor 😍

I could not agree more with the duvet cover comment. Why iron it when it creases up the second you sit on it?! It looks good for a grand total of six minutes

You hang the curtain rod high up so it opens up the room and makes the ceilings look higher :)

Curtain rods should be pretty high over window, give the illusion is more height, bigger window, taller ceilings.

You have to use heatproof tiles if you’re ever gonna turn that into a working fire or you’ll have to redo it

Omg I winced when you were like "let's put the curtain rod down significantly" I literally went "nooooo!!!!" Bc in my old house we had pipes going along there (for some reason?!) And then a builder flooded the living room 👍 so I was like"nooo it's up high for a reason" D: SO glad it was just a bit of key structure 👌

I would do a black tile at the bottom of the fireplace and then yellow around the wall. That way you don't see as much dirt there!

If you're going to install a wood burner later its best to use tiles that are suitable for fireplaces. Topps Tiles have a little logo by all of their tiles that show whether they're suitable for heat or not - worth a check ! :) x

I would say walls yellow and then a different on on the floor. White tile walls can look a bit clinical for me.

Tip for when drilling holes :- Take an old envelope and tape it to the wall under where you want to drill a hole. That will catch all the dust and debris.

I love the mustard tiles! Have you thought about using coloured grout? You can get it in loads of different shades and it can totally change the look of the tiles. (I stole this tip from Sarah Beeny’s Renovate Don’t Relocate series, which is available on demand on Sky and is really good if you’re like me and get excited by things like finding out that funky shades of grout exist).

I’m no expert, but I think the yellow tile on the walls of the fireplace would look great with a small black and white tile on the floor of it. I’m imagining like a hexagon shape tile with maybe a long thin black tile border to make it look really clean and finished? Would fit well with the ornamental style of the mantle. Just an idea! You could definitely get reclaimed tiles if that’s your jam, they do them in whole sets. Also with the yellow ones don’t forget design elements like fitting them all at an angle like parquet floor style to create chevrons, and different coloured grouts! ( black or charcoal would look great with the yellow) love the house vlogs! Much love xxx

There's a lintel behind the wall which you need a much more powerful drill to get through (learned this as I was in similar sitch to you when we bought our house) one if my Devon rex cats ran up my curtains and pulled the full pole and curtains off and it left massive holes, the previous owner had out it up, and too far out asi assume they couldn't get through the lintel, it was diabolical. So yes, there is something behind there. You need a really strong drill and drillbit.

Lucy, you have inspired my husband and I to redo our home. We spent almost a month simply painting the living room, kitchen, bathroom and putting new flooring in 2 out of 5 rooms. Not mentioning that our boys ended up first with croup then bronchitis. So on top of the remodeling we had to keep running to the hospital & playing nurse 24/7 for our little ones. Hello Lucy, I'm sure someone has probably mentioned this to you already, but just in case noone has, I'll mention it here. You have quite an amount of water coming into the house and laminate soaks up the water. From there it goes unter your lovely new wooden floor and will then slowly creep up the walls - and you might not notice for weeks or months, depending on how much or how little it is. It happened to us, it was such a small amount, steadily over some weeks or maybe months that we didn't even notice the water entering the floor - until it did creep up the walls. And that was messy and took weeks to dry with holes in the floors and industrial drying machines, a lot of mess and a lot of noise. Do cover that fireplace when it rains, to save you the hassle.

Why does no one use fireplaces in England? Seems like a lot of houses have them but they are boarded up or have wood burning stoves in them. Just curious.

For the tiles, I'd say white surround and gold base would look amazing! Or vice versa! Just not all gold/yellow! Also, when hanging curtain poles etc., my advice is use a spirit level! It's a super quick way to keep things straight (take it from a 25 year old who redecorated her whole room and everything was ANGLED. Literally diagonal, I'm not joking). Love your videos!

Definitely go the the star tile!! After about a year of living in a house you’ll probably want to have a change around of decor especially colour schemes which may make the yellow tile hard to work with. Plus the star tile is beautiful! Love what you’ve done so far! X

You can polyfilla big holes, I done a full outie corner of a wall that had an 8 in long 6 inch deep gouge (probably had been whacked by something repeatedly as it was a teenagers bedroom before we bought the house) just do a layer at a time. I used masking tape when I got further out to make the corners shape. It's painted now in lovely Fired Earth paint and you cant tell. Just leave a day or so to dry between each layer, then add another

For the fireplace, try painting it in the colour you are thinking of first to give you an idea how the colour will look in there. Less effort to paint and decide you're not keen on the colour than tile it and not like it! With your roof leak, make sure you leave the patch in your bedroom a good amount of time to dry after having the roof fixed before you repaint, if it goes really brown then grab a little pot of stain block to brush over first. So cool to watch you getting stuck into house projects :-)

I just painted our white fireplace dark green and IT IS EVERYTHING.

Noo the stars aren't too big they'd look amazing!! I think if you do the mustard there would be too many strong colours as bold accents and it would be competing with the sofa which you want to be the star of the show, and the stars would complement the cushions too! However, the mustard ones would look amazing in the little nook in your bedroom!

I don’t know where you’re at with the fireplace tiling. I’m currently binge watching all your vlogs and got to this one. I would tile the whole fireplace with the yellow/mustard tile throughout but I’m incredibly biased because that colour is my favourite!

I find taking a photo of the room/area then having a play around on Photoshop or some sort of editor can be really helpful when choosing things like tiles/wall colours etc 😊 especially as you are hoping to repaint so could see what different tile combos look like with different wall colours. Either way I'm sure you'll choose a lovely design!

When you have daffodils popping out in London and here near Toronto, Canada, we just got 20 cm of snow D: I would do the tiles all one colour/pattern. Do agree that the star pattern is a little big, but if you could find a scaled down version... I also think that the yellow tile could go well with that or similar looking patterned tile.
