I R&R the hydrostatic transmission which is a Peerless Tecumseh VST. I install the new bellows and official Peerless oil. Parts kit is available at Jack's Small engines it's part # 799030

Your instincts were right, it IS bentonite lube in that gear case!! [Peerless Bentonite Grease 788067] They later changed to 80/90 lube. Thank you for this vid, It is very helpful. I am going with 20w50 synthetic motorcycle oil in the hydro. From what I have found, its what all the aftermarket oil marketing companies are labeling as "20w50 hydrostatic fluid".

Great video! I have the same mower and it doesn’t pull up hill. Did you have the same symptoms? On a flat it moves but slowly. TIA

No that was mainly just preventative maintenance - I thought it had lost a little power but it was still working fine except it was just a little slower in reverse. However, it has now started doing exactly what you describe and I'm going to be looking into it soon. Either the tranny is letting go or maybe the belt is slipping (I'm almost thinking it's the belt). I'll be working on it soon and videoing whatever I find out.

Never ever will I buy one of those. Thanks for showing what to look out for when shopping. I thought removing the fender and the gas tank showed a lack of engineering forethought as I changed a Tuff-Torq hydrostatic transaxle's oil in my neighbor's Simplicity, this Tecumseh thing, what were they thinking? BTW, drained oil had a fine, aluminum metalflake swarf/swirl to it, change that stuff, contrary to the advice I received from my local dealer.

Great video! I just bought a mower with this transmission and this is very helpful. I had one question about the forward pedal. Does it hit the foot rest when you put it down all the way? Or should it be dropping beside it when fully engaged?

On my mower yes it does but it really depends on how you have the pedal adjusted and how loose the linkage is I don't think it did when it was new but it's kind of sloppy now.

What about the other cavity with the gears? Good videography, demonstration and information! Hope the machine is still running good for you. I have an old Craftsman LT1000 that has done me very well over the years but now seems to be indicating some transmission problems may be on the horizon. So, like you, I’d like to head those off at the pass before that become big problems! Thank you again!

Honestly I would not drain but just add some gear oil if it looks ok and not worry about it. I believe there was supposed to be about 1/2 inch on the screwdriver when going straight down. I didn't show it but I added a little back in and put the plug on. Transmission is still working perfectly fine!

I don't think so..if you have the same transmission i do then hoisting it up is the best way (look for another video I did where i hang it by the front...that's the way to do it!

Thanks for showing this, I have the same year mower and after watching your video I'm gonna do mine. my hydro is the same as yours so can you tell me how much gear oil you ended up putting in. I have some of that lube your using but don't know how full to fill with gear oil. How is your mower doing now?

if you are filling it the way I did (with the bellows removed) you are supposed to fill it up to 1 and 29/32 from the top of the case (basically 2 inches from the top). If you go to 39 min in the video you will see it's kind of irrelevant as the purpose is to release the bellows as your tightening the "lid" so that all of the air is pushed out. Mower is still running fine and the transmissions seems to still be in perfect shape.

Hey I just re-read this...I think I added just a tiny bit of gear oil..i estimated what came out and put it back in. I don't think it's as important as the gear oil doesn't get that hot in such a slow speed machine and if it did get hot and expand it could push past the little rubber plug.

If it won't move at all then I would check to make sure you didn't break the drive belt.

I'm 6 month s late to ask you about this I have a powr Kraft limited edition mower by MTD for Mountgumary ward it has peerless hydro static transmission I will get the model number on it to you some how I need to know what I need to do with it as far as service goes on it

There really isn't any service to do to it unless it doesn't work. As shown in the video you can change the fluid and the bellows if you want but I"m not sure it's really necessary. The fluid didn't look great but looked way better than I thought it would for something that's been used regularly for 20 yrs.
