@@Lazarob12 Alabama. I know it’s extremely low. I was expecting $100 a week, minimum. It has branched into other services such as shrub trimming and possibly taking down a dead dogwood tree in the fall. Also, I brag about Vic. I’m one of his best sources of advertising and I found him by word of mouth from an elderly lady. I knew he was a solid guy before I ever met him. My wife is a NP at our local hospital and we can give Vic more yards than he can handle , if he wants them. My yard is extremely easy to mow and edge because I maintained it well before I got sick .. Exmark Quest with a Kawasaki FR651. Shindaiwa trimmer, Lesco spreader. . I took a lot pride in my yard. . Vic and his entire crew wave, say hi when they see me outside. We don’t stop and chat, it’s a simple wave but I’m telling you guys that small gestures go a long way. He has never said it out loud but Vic understands that turning my yard over to a crew is one of the most difficult things I have ever done. It’s an admission that my disease has progressed because I admit I can’t do it anymore and that’s a tough thing to do. My advice to anyone dealing with a bad client is to give them about 1 chance then fire them . They might be having a bad day, got a bad medical diagnosis so give them about 1 chance. Anymore than 1 chance and you have let the customer have too much power and they will screw you until it hurts. Most of the people that bitch and complain haven’t spent a summer in their yard. It’s hot, miserable, and that’s why we pay you to do it. Trust me… nobody wants to lose their yard guy in July 🤣 You have the advantage because it’s hard as hell to find another guy in July . You guys have enough shit to deal with. Having said all of this, there is such thing as BAD MONEY, meaning the client isn’t worth the hassle. Vic has his business built up where he can tell people to F off because he can pick another up in 20 minutes or less.

Don't forget about Unemployment, Workman's Compensation Insurance and Property Damage Liability Insurance plus insurance on the equipment. And we haven't even thought about taxes yet. I've been an apartment dweller for most of my life, and I have no desire to ever purchase property, so I haven't mowed a lawn probably since I was one of those preteen kids walking door to door on my street with Dad's lawn mower and a can of gas, mowing lawns for like $8!!! Accounting for inflation, I'd guess that $25-$50 that you mentioned probably wouldn't be too far off the mark from what I was doing in the late 70s. No way anyone will get a landscaping company to mow their lawn for anything even close to that mark again. I'd say if so done wants to pay $50, try calling on one of the neighborhood kids to do it. If you can get them to put down their phone for an hour or so. I'd guess it's probably way past that time when a couple of neighborhood kids would grab their shovels and clear the driveways and walkways for the elderlies in the neighborhood after a snowstorm, and not ask them beforehand because we didn't want to charge them for it. I didn't get it before, but Dad explained about old fogies and not usually having much money and not being able to do it themselves. I got the idea to not charge them on my own, but based on what he told me. Obviously, it wasn't the greatest work, but wielding a shovel at eight to ten years old doesn't exactly yield the best results, but they were mostly cleared and walkable. We lived not too far from an old abandoned mine, so getting salt was never a problem. We'd hammer out a block, take it home, hammer it into smaller pieces, then hammer those into smaller pieces, then those as well, until we had a bunch of smaller than pea sized chunks of salt crystals, and we'd throw those down on their walkways. It was a lot of work, but we didn't care. We were getting to break shit with hammers without getting in trouble for it.

$50 is bare minimum per hour, I normally shoot for$60-80/hr but I quote fixed rate

My clients pay me 180-200 a month for weekly cut that usually take me 20-40min. I can't imagine wanting to pay someone 50 a lawn cut that takes 20 mins but they don't want to do it and want someone reliable and for it to look nice for the weekend.

That depends upon the size of your lot. If a homeowner bit off more than they could chew your luxury becomes a necessity.

It stops being a luxury when it is required by the HOA, the neighborhood covenants, the county/city ordinances, or when safety becomes a priority. Lots of locations where neglecting those "luxuries" end up with fines. It is not uncommon to receive a call to cut an overgrown lawn so the homeowner can avoid a fine.

I bought the Scag (w/Kawasaki FR651V) in 8/19 for $4399. With taxes, a spare set of blades, two oil filters and "dealer prep," drive-out price was $5131. I don't recall the price of gas back in '19, but now in 6/24 non-ethanol fuel is $3.79. With a 5.5/gal tank, I get 4 cuts. Other than greasing zerks, yearly oil, air and fuel filter changes, this machine has been trouble free.

From 1967 when I was 12, thru 1971 I cut grass in my neighborhood. I had 3 yards that were usually weekly and 4 others when the owners where busy. Most of the yards took about 30-40 minutes with a 21" walk behind. I only charged $3. I should have kept at it, when I turned 16 I got an actual job detailing cars, part time, $2 per hour. I should have just gotten more yards.

After removing a couple ticks in the last couple weeks and owning a similar property, I was thinking exactly the same thing. Properties like that are the worst. I have a large grass area which I'm considering letting turn back into woods. I don't know why people have huge lawns like that. What do you use it for? It is nothing but a maintenance headache. On top of what you see in this video, mix in invasive trees like Tree of Heaven, White Mulberry, and Siberian Elm and you will know what I've been dealing with. The guy in the video is nuts not wearing long clothing, with regard to ticks.

And in area copperheads would also be a problem

Wear long sleeves, long pants, a hat and work boots and you will be resistant to most pests. It has worked for me for years and the worst thing that has happened is an occasional scratch from a brier or an ant gets in my clothes and starts biting. I even wear bungee cords on the bottom of my pants and that keeps most ants out.

Spray bug spray on your shoes and socks as well as on your pants up to the knee (or higher if going into taller grass).

That's what I was thinking, no way would I cut every two weeks. A lot of times I have to cut my own place twice a week or clippings are piled up everywhere unless you bag on every cut.

Modern commercial mowers practically are Bush hogs. Definitely not like the old Snappers.

I cut my 5 acres as far into woods as I can. Even bought a Steiner to go further to stop bugs and snakes. Cool video and that for 3 guys and equipment is cheap.

I mow my fairly rough 5 acres 3-4 times then just replace the blades. Not much blade left to sharpen.

That’s what I used to charge back in 2004. If 2 or more yards were touching each other, I would remove $5 from each of their prices. I have never hired someone to cut my grass so I do not know what prices are today. I feel like my neighbor is paying around $80 for their 1.5 acres.

Around here at $25 per normal yard you'd lose money. The yards may be small but drive time, equipment cost, raising labor rates would put you under. Small yards start at $65 and go from there. Land like this would be $1,000 easy. I'm in southeast MO.

Don’t give off new guy vibes. Get insurance, it’s cheap, I pay $61 a month for $1m liability coverage. For payment, I get card on file. You can define how you charge. For instance, some folks charge before the cut, some after, some like me charge on Mondays and some charge once a month. If you get “I’m not gonna pay” vibes from someone don’t do the work or give an astronomical price.

@@wardraven8755 Have you done the math on the purchase of machines, oil, gas, filters, spark plugs, batteries, belts, grease, bearing replacement, blades, blade sharpening equipment, tire replacement, tools, storage shed, a string trimmer, it’s needs, a blower, the labor time, the storage demands and how it affects your other needs? I think you might be surprised of how quickly all of those add up over time and how much wear and tear these machines acquire and need service. Every season you mow your lot you are again faced with all of these expenses which have to be accounted for in cost of ownership. If you fae a loss on your equipment in value or theft that too should be in your math. It’s much more complicated than many would imagine.

@@peterwill3699 All lawncare equipment requires frequent maintenance and replacement parts even for the homeowner. Think about the purchase price of new equipment today. I had owned a tractor and know about all the expenses as I did all of my own maintenance and repair work. It never ended.
