The Symphony No. 1 in E flat major, K. 16, was written in 1764 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at the age of just eight years. By this time, he was already notable in Europe as a wunderkind performer, but had composed little music.
The autograph score of the symphony is today preserved in the Biblioteka Jagiellońska in Kraków. The piece was written on the Mozart family's Grand Tour of Europe in London when they had to move to Chelsea during the summer of 1764 due to Mozart's father Leopold's illness (throat infection). The house at 180 Ebury Street, now in the borough of Westminster, where this symphony was written, is marked with a plaque. The symphony was first performed on 21 February 1765. The work shows the influence of several composers, including his father and the sons of Johann Sebastian Bach, especially Johann Christian Bach, an important early symphonist working in London whom Mozart had met during his time there. The symphony is scored for 2 oboes, 2 horns, and strings. The work is in three movements:
1. Molto allegro, 4/4
2. Andante, C minor, 2/4
3. Presto, 3/8
What's notably interesting is the symphony's second movement, in which the young eight year-old Mozart makes use of the famous four note motif that appears in the Finale of his Jupiter symphony. The four notes, Do, Re, Fa, Me, were used considerably by Mozart, and they make an appearance in several of his works, including his Symphony No. 33 and the Symphony No. 41. This particular theme is stated by the horns in his first symphony.

Therefore you postulate that today's musicians will reach the same level as Mozart did, but it will take some time due to the "old people"?

Hmm, that's hard to say. During the end of the Baroque era and into the beginning of the Classical era, composers and musicians seemed to stop writing polyphonic music in exchange for a more simple, structural form of music. That is the difference between Bach and Mozart. Bach was considered old-fashioned at the time for writing contrapuntal music, when other composers starting simplifying Baroque polyphony for homophonic textures. Maybe the elders of that time (elders of the upper class, because the lower class of that time had Folk music, Popular music and Street music) thought that the new music was too simple and stripped compared to the fugues and counterpoint they were used to.

It's amazing how such a young kid can do something such amazing things! For those who didn't know, he wrote this symphony side by side with his sister, Nannerl. Mozart was the composer and Nannerl the transcriber. Mozart composed this shymphony in London, and was inspired by Johann Christian Bach (Sebastian's son, also called 'The Bach of London'), and by his father, which at the time was really sick (he had a cold, but during the 17's even a cold could be lethal). This is the first time we can find the typical Mozart's motto theme 'C-D-F-E' (Do-Re-Fa-Mi) which will characterize most of Mozart's symphonies and will have it's climax in Symphony No. 41, also known as Jupiter Symphony. Sorry for my grammatical mistakes, I'm not a native english speaker.

@@motherlandmars5999Did you know Mohammad is your God? Allah is your only Intercessor: Allah it is He Who has created the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them in six Days. S. 10:3 But Mohammad is also your Intercessor: When I see Him, I will fall down in prostration before Him, and will remain in prostration as long as He will, and then He will say, ‘RAISE YOUR HEAD, O MUHAMMAD, AND SPEAK, FOR YOU WILL BE LISTENED TO, AND INTERCEDE, FOR YOUR INTERCESSION WILL BE ACCEPTED, AND ASK, FOR YOUR REQUEST WILL BE GRANTED.’ (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 9, Book 97, Number 532 (O Allah, I ask of You and I turn my face towards You BY VIRTUE OF THE INTERCESSION OF MUHAMMAD THE PROPHET OF MERCY. The Chapters Of Establishing The Prayer And The Sunnah Regarding Them, Chapter 189. What Was Narrated Concerning Prayer At Times Of Need, pp. 329-330 If you are wondering how this makes Allah a Mushrik and a Kafir, the answer is simple: By accepting Muhammad’s Intercession Allah is actually encouraging his followers to turn to a Creature for Salvation, thereby violating his very own instructions as found in both the Quran and specific ahadith. In other words, Allah is actually encouraging and promoting shirk! Place your faith in the real God Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins and you will not perish. Have a good day.

I have read all the 296 comments (it took a couple of hours). Most of them are hilarious, others delirious. Many simply invent what they vaguely remember about Mozart (he wrote this at 5, he lived 100 years before Beethoven, Beethoven was his student, etc...) The quarreling about who's the best is intense and never ending: Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and others. Many adore Mozart as a miracle of mankind (Leopold, his father, was the first to think so), a few pooh-pooh him. What is most striking is the amount of half-baked legendary stuff floating in people's minds, and their vast ignorance of the true facts. However, a handful of commenters are true students of music and make very insightful and instructive comments. But you have to read the whole torrent of comments to find the few nuggets (no more than 5-10). Very few point out that one of the unique charms of early Mozart's music derives from the special qualities of his very youth - his joy of living, his energy, his exuberance and excitement, but also his refined, exaggerated sense of pathos and deep feelings that is so characteristic of youth - since there is very little known music written by boys and adolescents. You never get this from Bach, nor Beethoven, nor anybody else, for that matter. Mozart's early music (age 6 to 19) is truly unique. K. 16 is as good an example as any other.

Have you listened to the Odense syphonie? KV:16a in A minor... It was recovered in the 1980's somewhere in Denmarck, its supposed to be a transcription because it isn't Mozart's writing or anyone in his family, but there's four bars somewhere in his archive that match the beginning, so the theory is that it is his, and was lost and recovered. Theres a lot of controversy about it, some say it isn't Mozart's, but if it is it was possibly written about a year after this one... Im researching it for a paper and I think I like it because of what you described, the raw feelings, joy, angst, all in a very gracious presentation. I feel it very well could be the music of a child. Do you know anything about it?
@roobookaroo

Nicolás García Lieberman I don't know much more than you do. This lovely symphony is posted on KZfaq, in Christopher Hogwood's recording with the academy of ancient music. I've read - the Wikipedia article - The Arnold Schonberg article on its discovery (NY Times, Feb. 5, 1983) - The extremely thorough discussion by Scott Fruehwald, of Oct. 1, 1988, on "The Authenticity of the Symphony in A Minor (K16a) Attributed to Mozart: A Stylistic Study - College Music Symposium", which concludes: "K16a failed all three checklists. Because it is statistically remote that an authentic symphony would fail all three, one may conclude that K16a is not by Mozart.33 Because the attribution in the Odense source is Signor Mozart, one might conjecture that the symphony is by Mozart's father. However, the symphony is even less in Leopold's style than that of his son.34 It is hard to imagine Leopold writing the Sturm und Drang opening movement. While there is another unrelated Mozart (Philip Kajatan), it is probable that the Mozart attribution is a mistake. The Zaslaw-Eisen article mentions several possibilities for K16a's composer: Daniel Heartz believes he is probably French, a German working in France, or a Frenchman working in Germany; Zaslaw is reminded of George Anton Benda and Joseph Martin Kraus; and Sadie thinks it might be North German.35 While my tests prove that Mozart could not have written K16a, a major problem remains: informing and convincing the general public. It is highly unlikely that there will be a front-page article in the New York Times or a cable television program announcing that K16a is not by Mozart. Moreover, even when a work is proven spurious, the ascription to a famous composer tends to endure.36 Hopefully, in the future, journalists and musicologists will be more careful in establishing a work's authenticity before proclaiming a major new discovery." - Then the key article by Neil Zaslaw & Cliff Eisen, on "Signor Mozart's Symphony in A minor, K. Anhang 220 = 16a, published in "The Journal of Musicology", Vol. 4, No. 2 (Spring, 1985 - Spring, 1986), pp. 191-206. Those two top musicologists conclude that, though it is a lively and spirited symphony recalling some elements in other Mozart's symphonies, 16a is not by him or Leopold. - Then the conclusion by Sir Nicholas Kenyon, in his "The Faber Pocket Guide to Mozart", available online in Google Books, which follows the previous negative conclusion. The current top musicologist in charge of following all the new documentation about anything related to Mozart is CLIFF EISEN, professor at King's College, London. See his Wikipedia article and his own academic page, showing: Professor Cliff Eisen Professor of Music Email: cliff.eisen@kcl.ac.uk Tel +44 (0)20 7848 2307 Music Department King's College London Strand Campus London WC2R 2LS He is the editor of the famous biography "W.A. MOZART" by Hermann Abert (1919), translated in 2007 for Yale Un. Press. I checked in that important book, and I was a bit surprised to discover that symphony 16a is NOT MENTIONED at all. First, because it was not mentioned in the original 1919 text by Abert, and, second, because Eisen must be sticking to his conclusion that it is NOT a work of Mozart, and since Abert never discusses it, Eisen found no reason to mention 16a in any new note by him. This was published in 2007, and it seems that no new info has emerged to change Eisen's conclusion. Since he knows everything published about Mozart, and his email is public knowledge, nothing prevents you from emailing him and asking him further questions. Nobody can challenge the conclusion of Neil Zaslaw & Cliff Eisen (1986) and Scott Fruehwald (Feb. 1988), confirmed by the omission of 16a in the recent edition of Abert's book (2007), that 16a is not a work of Mozart, without some serious new arguments.

Roo Bookaroo Thanks so much! I also read the Fruehwald article, and it is extremely thorough. I think I agree, with a bit of sadness though, but it is still a great piece of music and it's nice to know other composers from the classical period, even if their identity isn't clear, that made such beautiful music. There is certainly an over idolatry of Mozart's work, to the point where few other composers of the classical period are even considered or listened to. Maybe Haydn. But Im not a fan of Haydn... Nope! Mozart was born in 1756 in Salzburg. Not an Alien! Just the product of two humans. Mozart had the fortune of having a father willing to teach him everything. if Mozart had not had that, the odds of him becoming as great as he did would not have been so..... great :) X3.

TheFatbip pmlouisjuste I believe that in order to truly achieve greatness, there is something more required than being born with an innate talent. I believe that true greatness is 1 percent talent and 99 percent work ethic. A person cannot learn to have control when playing piano if they don't practice it. Now, of course, you don't have to have a teacher to do these things, either, but how are you supposed to understand it well if you don't study it, and you aren't encouraged to do so. Mozart was just as human as us, but it was the conditions of his upbringing that opened the doors for him to gain such a knowledge of music. Think about it. Leopold Mozart taught everything to his son, and Mozart enjoyed it so much that he wanted to grow with music. Leopold, who was working under a prince in Salzburg at that point in time, was financed to take Mozart on a tour of Europe, where Mozart grew and showed his prodigious talent as a musician. He discovered that people loved the music he created and was therefore encouraged to continue and become even greater. It was a matter of coincidence.

Really a genius! He wrote a masterpiece - at the age of only eight! Unbelievable! It was, by the way, his 16th(!) work - But listen well: Isn't it really wonderful and crystal clear, even in modern times? This wonderful part of the positive music was written by a child - 256 years ago.... you can hear it in baroque times - you can hear it now and in a hundred years, this wonderful piece of music will still be timelessly perfect - just think about it for a moment.... This is the real part of a genius that takes humanity to the next step! Simply true and timeless

Good grief! When I was 8 years old I was out playing ball, riding my bike, playing hide-and-seek, climbing trees, staying one step ahead of my parents for misbehaving! Just wish I had been exposed to music like this at an earlier age. I finally discovered Clasical Music when I was in high school. I watched a re-released showing of Disney’s “Fantasia”, with the cartoonists’ interpretation of great Classical Music! I was HOOKED! From then on, I was constantly going to our local library and checking out reords of anything composed by Bach, Brrthoven, Mozart, Haydn, etc. - I couldn't get enough! Music - Good Music - so enriches the soul!

Wacky Venky you cannot say something that s not real and put it in bold letters (Nobody IS BORN with TALENT) A teacher that says that talent doesn t exist is a teacher that does not underatand that everybody has some affinities for a determinated job. This statement is a paradox. Many people studied music at professional levels and don t have talent. They are great at technique but don t feel the thing. They would be like mozart maybe at another jobs. For every thing you do in your life you must have talent for it otherwise you don t fullfill your capacities. A teacher should recognise a gifted individual and help him reach the top and also indirectly indicate when someone should search another option. We are not robots so talent must exist otherwise we would all play in the same way with a bit of practice. I don t know the teacher and i do not doubt that he is a good person but i don t think it s a good statement for a teacher to say expetially knowing how many great talents there are in the world and Mozart is surely a master out of this world, I would say music itself incarnated

They arent. Its just cultivated through proper diet and teaching. Music is not as difficult as people believe it to be. You hear the many instruments yet dont realize they are just playing triads over one another in different octaves. You only have in 99% of most music 7 notes per scalem when you learn what notes have tendency to other notes, and cadances you see its simplicity in its complexity.

Not only more deeply considered a downright incredible work - of a child! You immediately hear the youthful enthusiasm, this incredible emotional youthful energy - irrelevant whether it is now a quarter of a millennium in the past, when it was written, - it is as wonderfully accomplished fresh, as on the first day, when it was first performed. Truly, the first masterpiece of musical genius. ( It must be emphasized, it is only Mozart's first extant symphony, so perhaps, there was one before that - lost in the winds of time?)

I don't know if that's true but his last work (Requiem in D minor K. 626) makes me believe that he came back to Christ repenting from Freemasonry. No wonder his last notes are from Lacrimosa which brings up tears. Nobody would ever think of what he would compose if he lived 35 more years.

@@wesleytaule1766 that's a depressing way to look at it, what you should rather take from this is that if an 8 year old can compose this then if you dedicate yourself to music for 8 years then maybe you can too, and if you keep working hard you might achieve something you could never even imagine for yourself. The key part is to start and believe and maybe you won't get to the top but if you believe you do then you will go places you didn't think you could

If you can write music at any age it's a divine gift and blessing that you should embrace explore and give to the world just as these fabulous composers did. My children have the ability to compose music I've attempted to keep them in symphony as this gift at such a young age is an incredible gift. My oldest daughter didn't follow through with her gift of playing different symphony instruments and writing/composing her own music. Composing and playing symphony music stopped being her "thing" as she grew up into an older teen. My son on the other hand he is still young and impressionable enough to explore these gifts of his and hopefully I can help to inspire him to continue playing symphony music, playing different symphony instruments, and will encourage him to write and compose symphony music himself. I love this peice of Mozart I've never heard it until now it is beautiful.

When I was 8, I was placed on a large tree branch by my father, I tried to grip the branch between my legs and with my little fists clenched like chicken claws into the furled elm bark. But then as now as ever, I had no talent for sport, and as I tried to inch just a little further along the branch, I began to slip sideways. I panicked, and tried to squeeze my legs and frantically tried to grasp the branch. I clumsily headbutted the branch, causing a nosebleed, and scraped the skin off my inner thighs, and got scrapings of bark under my fingernails and cut my thumb, all in slow motion. I know I made one frantic squeeze with my ankles, which only succeeded in scraping them as well as pointing me straight head-down to klunk into the gravel spread around the base of the tree. I can still see the scar on my forehead 41 years later. My father, a fan of Mozart, passed away this past Saturday. I've always been more of a fan of Beethoven, and have no children.
