First time checking out MPC 2.8 update, specifically the MIDI changes. It really opens up the platform to be a serious hub for your MIDI devices. In this video I find some issues as well.
Also, that Sabrent USB Hub I couldn't find on Amazon anymore. Sorry about that!

8:00 I'm so glad you including the problems, and not a seamless how to. I never have things work out, and seeing you problem solve was really valuable. Just got my One delivered, but had midi merger and splitter boxes. I'm old skool midi, but the USB looks so tidy and succinct. Recently learnt how to coil cables with a heat gun. so can tame those excessively long usb cables.

Hey Ricky! Love your vids! You’re a major inspiration bro! That’d be an interesting test to load up the CPU on the MPC One and see if things start laggin/getting out of sync. I’ve personally hit no where near the limit because I’m using other bits of hardware typically. Also, I know that certain USB chipsets on motherboards can affect latency on audio interfaces, so I wouldn’t be surprised to something similar with USB-Midi setups can occur. I definitely stress over this stuff too lol .. The number of times I’ve rearranged my studio for “efficiency” when I could’ve been making jams is embarrassing. Thanks for the comment and the inspiration from your vids! ❤️🙏❤️

Set your keystep as “master” in your MPC One midi input settings. This makes it so that your keystep will always be the midi input for each midi track you make.

So yeah, Logic has had this feature for years and I think it’s called “Record Last Take” or “Capture Last Take” .. something like that. It was buried under the commands without a shortcut back when I used Logic. That might’ve changed with recent versions.

Kool video! Drivers for sound cards is a pretty complex under taking. Their are sound card companies that still, today in 2020 that don’t have stable drivers for full computer OS. Akai would have to work a miracle to support sound cards inside MPC’s. The auto detect of plugged in MIDI devices is a pretty kool feature. I have not seen that a lot on hard ware. Thank you for sharing 🙏🏾‼️
@TeftyMeems
@TeftyMeems 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Yup, drivers are super complex. Ideally they would just adopt the iOS method so if a device is supported for iOS, it’ll be recognized the same way. Don’t need audio panel stuff, just the basic support for the channels. Here’s hoping 🙏

Thanks for this. Including the "bumps in the road" that you encountered is maybe the most helpful part of the video! Everybody needs a refresher from time to time on troubleshooting midi issues. Regarding USB connectivity, the part most people don't realize (including myself, until the last year or so) is that USB devices must always connect to a "host" to manage the data flow. It's not a simple signal over a wire kind of thing (the way midi DIN cables are). A multi-device USB host is not a trivial thing to implement, which is why MOST hardware sequencers are not hosts and can't accept a MIDI hub. Akai has actually done a rare thing. This makes me even more interested in the MPC One.

great video! I'm still working with my ATARI ST (Notator) and Akai S6000 (1TB SD Card-Reader Mod! Best Sampler IMO) and many synths and classic drum machines. Still an amazing workflow with no midi- or clock problems even when I'm running 32 different channels! Like you would saying ROCK SOLID :) I was thinking of getting the MPC ONE (I also have the 2000 and MPC60) but I realize that the S6000 is still better for serious productions. 16 Outs, Digital, Multi-Midi 32 Channels (!!) and the new MPC units are great but they are not in the same "league". I hope you know what I mean. I love your videos and your music, keep up the awesome work!!

Super interesting. It was good to see you setting all that up I just updated my MPC One and I'm enjoying USB with the Novation Peak and Moog Sirin. I haven't played with the shift+record function yet, but I wonder if the other tracks are just armed to record and that's why the midi was captured? It seems like a real pain to unarm every other track just to take advantage of this feature. I'll have to do some investigating as well. The problem I see with turning off the incoming midi from the other devices like your Boog, OP1, Digitone etc. Is that will limit your ability to record your own knob tweaking for parameter automation.... But maybe the MPC can't even record that midi data anyway. I've never actually tried. But it's a feature in Ableton that I use all the time. For example I like to record my filter sweeps directly off the filter knob on the Peak or Moog. I'm sure glad to see Akai introducing more features. I hope they keep it coming because the MPC line has such incredible potential!
@TeftyMeems
@TeftyMeems 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Russell, that’s great insight on the armed tracks. Ideally it would just capture whatever input midi is selected to filter it down. Also, I didn’t think to try and capture CC data in this vid, I totally should have! And yeah, if you narrow down the input ports, you do start limiting options. We might just have to deal with extra steps in this workflow. Thanks for watching! 🙏🍻

Digitakt vs MPC One? Ok I just hit subscribe because that question has been bouncing in my head for a month!
@bolttracks
@bolttracks 4 жыл бұрын
The MPC is much more of a hardware DAW than the Digitakt. Depending on what sparks your creativity, the Digitakt will probably allow you to come up with ideas way faster and its sequencer features will allow for a good deal of randomness that can be super inspiring. The MPC is much more capable when it comes to polishing the tracks you're working on since it features literal plugins, inserts, sidechaining ability, bouncing of stems, exporting to Ableton projects, etc. And it of course integrates seamlessly with the MPC plugin which lets you work with it in a similar way to Maschine. The workflow however, is much more akin to that of a DAW rather than that of other groove boxes which means that some might find it more cumbersome that a Digitakt / OP-Z / MC-101 etc.

13:24 i have Arturia Drumbrute, and it has a tendency of sending MIDI notes when working in MIDI Slave mode. I used it with my Novation SL MkIII and I managed to get a MIDI ping-pong loop between them, which caused absolutely massive amount of MIDI data going back and forth. This in turn caused spectacular crashes by SL MkIII :) I did not find any sensible reason why it does this, and care not to waste ages troubleshooting it - I use Drumbrute as Slave with MIDI traditional and just one cable connected, it works well that way.
@TeftyMeems

Interesting! I thought I could turn off the “output” data from the DrumBrute Impact via the “track” setting in the MPC One, but it didn’t seem to do it that way. In this case, yeah a traditional midi cable would be better. Thanks for the comment!

@TeftyMeems
@TeftyMeems 4 жыл бұрын
Yup, so if you have Ableton send clock info via the MIDI panel (where you choose devices and whether or not they send clock) it swings MASSIVELY. Pretty unusable honestly. With Overbridge 2.0, turn off the clock in the Ableton MIDI panel and then load up the Digitakt plugin inside of Live and have it clock from the plugin. Hopefully that helps! 👍

@TeftyMeems
@TeftyMeems 4 жыл бұрын
Not stupid at all. I have a Mackie Onyx 1640i analog mixer to the right of the desk. All the audio from the gear gets routed into it and that’s the mix that we’re hearing for playback. I also have the direct outs of the channels (1-16) patched into my MOTU interface so during jam sessions I can record each track individually in Ableton. Thanks for watching! 🍻

Thanks for this video, i should dive more into this 2.8 midi thing. So audio aint coming back to mpc. Would love to see how to set up so, that you get that midi info back to mpc and sound out of it. So you would not need mixer to receive sounds from those usb synths. Also that receiving port thing is something that i have to get into if then that would work.
@TeftyMeems
@TeftyMeems 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Masa, so yeah, the USB ports only handle midi. I have a 16 channel Mackie analog mixer off to the right of the desk that everything gets routed into. I then capture the 2-channel mix off the Mackie board into Ableton while I’m recording the video. Depending on the Synths, you could chain the outputs to inputs (if the synth had it, like Digitone) all the way to the MPC One, and then just deal with the MPC output. In my opinion, a dedicated physical mixer is just a really nice tool to have in the studio, even if you ultimately mix “in the box” via your DAW. Thanks for watching! 🍻 (ps: you can find relatively cheap Mackie mixers nowadays used. I got my 1640i Onyx in used condition for $250 used from Guitar Center 👍)
@MasaTheSlayer
@MasaTheSlayer 4 жыл бұрын
@@TeftyMeems oh shit, thanks for the answer. I noticed that you have a mixer there and atm i would rather work without one and i would like get that midi info back from synth to mpc and audio out. I have mpc live and couple roland botique synths that i would like to use, but at least now i think i would want to have more dawless setup with mpc and work with that until i have base of a song or really solid loop or loops before transferring that to daw. Surely i could have setup that would include computer, mixer, mpc and synths but at least for now i just dont have deskspace for that. subbed.

No issues here. Korg Sync or Midi? If sync, it's likely to be the signal from the MPC One. Should be able to select different sync options in CV menu......or just grab a key/beatstep and run midi clock from the MPC to the Keystep or Beatstep and then sync out from the Keystep to the Monologue....or run midi instead. Incidentally one of my favourite synths there 😉

The MPC One + Keystep 37 combo has meant I've been having a blast lately. I love being able to sequence a Deepmind 12 and tx81z as well as use the CV outs to do crazy shit with a Reon Driftbox R, Blue Lantern Dwarf Star, and Pittsburgh SV-1. I only wish the MPC One had at least 1 more MIDI out port, 2 more audio outs, and a couple of extra CV outs for clock and modulation. Overall I think it's a very nice bit of gear and I'm pleased as someone who has owned/use pretty much all of the old ones.

The flux on the capacitors is a good indicator that the USB frequency is at the proper decibel level. Overall I think the mpc one has a zero latency of unnecessary modular wavelengths which will make a great addition to anyone willing to sign your pitty on the runny kine

Hello, Thank you for the video, very informative. I'm looking forward to use my MPC-ONE to its potential but my lack of knowledge is holding me back. I am having a huge issue getting my MicroKorgXL + to emit sound from its brain trying to plug it in the way you're doing it. The midi/sync option on preferences reads the MicroKorgXL+ _OUTPUT & MICROKORGXL+_SOUND What would you recommend I do to make it work? Do these require the 5'pin midi cable regardless? Should I re download the firm ware? Is it an issue with KORG?

Hi Vaughn, I actually don’t have experience with the MicroKorg gear but if USB is not working then using regular midi is no problem. Also, it wouldn’t be midi sync, it’d be the midi communication port (like midi + usb). Hopefully that helps! Good luck 🍻

Where is the audio out of the model D/electron going. I understand that the devices are sending midi via USB, is the audio coming directly out of the mpc or from the individual machines? The yellow audio out cable in the model d, is that going into an external desk or something? Sorry for all the questions haha considering buying one and trying to get my head around how it all works

We have an analog mixer off to the side to route all the audio of each device (and route audio into the MPC for sampling). The mixer then can route signals into Ableton via direct outs for additional mixing/finalizing. Thanks for watching!

I've been thinking about why audio interfaces can't be connected, although it seems they can. I connected my Sapphire 4i4, and it shows as midi ports, but not audio. I think it's because usb midi is standard protocol, so usb midi is easy (if the protocol is supported). But the audio aspect requires drivers. A the audio soundcard will either be mac or PC compatible, but not MPC compatible rivers. So unless focusrite writes some driver for the MPC series their is noth Akai can do to make the MPC support USB audio interfaces. Well apart from make their own that is. You mention you want out's, I'm the opposite, I would love more ins, then I could both ditch my mixer going into the MPC, and make use of the MPC's FX on my synths. and feed everything through sub mix and master processors. I would so dig a 4 in 4 out MPC expander. Or a 4 in expander and a 4 out expander option. MY old EM6400 had an option for adding extra in out card.

Hey DaNi, thanks for watching! And yes, definitely got more stuff planned for the channel. For easy routing, you’ll probably want to get a small format mixer (like 8 or 12 channels). Otherwise you’ll be constantly unplugging and plugging each device when capturing it. Congrats on the MPC One! 🍻 Also, no audio devices can currently connect via USB on the MPC One. Hopefully that changes in a future update.

I wonder if the midi data gaps affecting the OP-1, was the result of another instrument, like the digitone or impact, unintentionally transmitting midi on the same channel. I don’t know just curious if you got that working.
@TeftyMeems
@TeftyMeems 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it seems like that could've been the case. I'm pretty sure I had limited the inputs to the OP1 to just the KeyStep, so the Digitone etc shouldn't be sending any midi data to the OP1. Could be a bug, or I missed something in the settings.

I have the live. I had no idea you could run everything via the USB port with the new update. Does the mpc power the key step from the USB port alone? And does everything else require it’s own power supply still if you are running them into the mpc via USB?

Hi Roy, yes the KeyStep gets power from the USB port on the MPC One. I’ve been using it that way for a while now. My USB hub is powered so I’m not sure how many devices the MPC One can support that need power from the USB port. I’d probably just get a powered hub to be safe honestly.

Q. what about roland gear? example tb-3, tr drum machines, jd-xi mc707 etc? is this class complaint USB midi "only" so i guess is not going to work for ANY roland gear? by the way looking at an MPC but i have, jx-03, jp-08, system 1, td30 kit, jd-xi , roland sh-01 and a FA-06 plus atruria mini brute, MFB nanozwerg, yamaha RX5, a blofeld and korg volcas so i'm guessing actually MIDI din will be how i'd have to hook em up

@TeftyMeems 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Cresshead, I actually don’t have any Roland gear currently so I can’t comment on it. Didn’t realize that Roland gear is not class compliant. That seems super strange they’d do that. Maybe they have a dedicated USB-Midi mode? That’s basically what the Elektron gear is doing (USB-Midi or Overbridge mode). But honestly, the Midi din ports are fine to work with. Just make sure you use a splitter for long chains and not midi-thru on 8 pieces of gear. (You probably already know that 👍)

question! Lets say you play all the instruments in to the MPC One and record them. Will it let you quantize them or will it only quantize the drums since the drums comes from it and others are inputs? Thank you
@TeftyMeems

So the quantize works on anything that’s recorded (midi wise) in the MPC. So you can quantize while recording, or quantize individual tracks later on. And it can be any instrument, just so long as the midi being quantized is on the MPC. Hopefully that answers your question! 🍻
