MR2 Spyder 2zzge Timing Chain Replacement

The timing chain in the 2zzge broke on my first engine start attempt. Time to pull it apart and replace. A little delay in getting the MR2 Spyder up and running.

Not as difficult as I thought it would be and the parts were only $130.

The 2zz ex dot with the dot across is actually supposed to be a tooth off. Not in a straight line

Great video, thanks for the link to the torque PDF. My oil pump recently blew into pieces and I'm replacing it at the moment

When you lined that chain up with the timing marks, did you ever rotate the engine to check that they lined back up after 2 rotations? Or did you just align per the video, no rotating and put the cover back on? Only asking because I find the manual hard to follow for the proceedure AFTER the chain is in place without rotating.

Question, if you were to remove the chain tensioner would you have enough slack in the chain to replace the vvti sprocket. With out pulling the engine out or timing cover off

Maybe. It is pretty tight when installed in the MR2 but it would be worth the try before pulling the engine.

Hello Mr. Stark, NICE work as always! Have you considered doing a compression check before installing the engine? Would allow you to confirm free engine rotation and good valve seating. Also interest in your parts sourcing as you replace many fairly expensive parts at a nicely stated price (oil pump, timing chain & follower/tensioner, seals, reluctor, crank sensor, etc.) Thanks again for posting and very much looking forward to that first fire-up! Mr. P

PS: Save that lift bolt that caused this entire mess as it is now a trophy from the build and a great life reminder of the Laws of that B-stard Murphy

LSmiata If he did save that lift bolt then he can keep it with the flattened remains of the nut that was pounded flat inside the head of his 1985 Grand Am 30 years ago under similar circumstances! Together they may provide a powerful reminder not create a third reminder 😜

@@negativeindustrial 😂 You certainly picked the correct username. Have you ever turned a wrench in your life? Pathetic.... ....and it was my Grand Am, not his. Best lesson I ever learned.
