Probably the best Rusalka I have ever heard. It is so obvious that Mrs Fleming just loves this aria. It is her song. They could not have possibly chosen anyone better to sing this for the Anniversary of 20 years of freedom. Thank you Mrs Fleming.

I am Czech. Dvorak's music often leaves me breathless not just because it's beautiful but also because it contains the spirit of my home. Not many performers can provide both qualities for me singing Dvorak. Fleming can. Always! I saw her singing this aria in the beautiful Municipal house of Prague. She moved me to tears. Sublime. Thank you.

Makes me just want to melt into a puddle of tears, it's so beautiful. This was the aria that really sealed it for her early on, and so it just sits in her voice and in her person like a favorite chair in a familiar sunny nook.

The first time I heard this song was in "Driving Miss Daisy". When Jessica Tandy stops her cross-stitching for a brief moment to listen....I was in tears. Beautiful acting, beautiful singing, beautiful song. Excellence!

Nothing in nature compares with this voice, the highs are birdlike in their perfection, the lows well-breathed from the diaphragm, this performance makes goose bumps and a tear slowly descends before I realize, perfect diction, perfect highs, fullness of each note. Could not ask or dream for more. I have listened to this rendition multiple times. 100 times to go. Her only rival, Anna, who authentically performs it with flawless Russian diction and emotion, for obvious reasons.

Except it's in Czech, which is distinctly different from Russian. But I don't want to pick holes, because this is a magical performance of a magical aria, and she gives it her all, even in concert.

You should listen to the performance by Zinka Milanov, the great Yugoslavian soprano who sang for 30 years at the Metropolitan. Hers was THE version.

Kevin, my dear chap, Renée sings her voice not the aria. What this performance has to do with a bewildered, pensive young water spirit, I don't know. Try this, in my opinion the finest Rusalka that I have ever heard, Eva Dřízgová-Jirušová. Eva puts on a powerful voice when the part requires, but here, she portrays Rusalka perfectly kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i8edosmlu7bapHU.html She only builds to a crescendo as she pleads with the Moon not to go (or "to fade" or "go to sleep", take your pick). It is not the Moon's fault, it is the clouds that begin to obscure the Moon from Rusalka. Eva is secure enough not to have to show off at every performance regardless of the part. As an alternative try Milada Šubitová, beautifully paced, from the finest film of Rusalka ever made kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qNyqdcKlyq_Unnk.html In this film clip, the Rusalka that you see here is an actress miming to Milada. By 1975, Milada may have got away with Rusalka on the stage but was a little too broad on the beam for the close-ups in cruel film. As for the English translation shown in the info below the video, it might be a pretty piece of verse, but it is NOT what Rusalka is singing. Rusalka sings of "silver" (stříbrný) later in the aria but not in the first line. "Měsičku" is a diminutive of "Moon" (Měsíc) and as Rusalka sees the Moon as her companion, her familiar, her friend, on her wanderings across the surface of the pool at night, the best that I can suggest is "Moon, my friend". The first four lines are therefore Měsíčku na nebi hlubokém Moon, my friend in the Heavens deep světlo tvé daleko vidí Light (of) yours far sees po světě bloudíš širokém, Across the World wander you wide díváš se v příbytky lidí. See you, yourself into the homes (of) humans. Broaden your horizons a little. @@kevindesirotte5242 Kevin, Thanks. The difference between you and me appears that I love the opera, Rusalka. We went to a performance of Rusalka in Bratislava on 18th December. I want to hear the perfect Rusalka .... and the perfect Ježibaba, and prince and the foreign princess, and the perfect kitchen boy and the perfect Vodník, and a perfectly presented "Květiny bílé po cestě" by the Chorus. Everything WAS perfect, especially Jozef Benci as the Vodník. The only problem was Maria Porubčinová who played Rusalka. She may have been a credible Rusalka at her debut 17 years ago, but she has enjoyed the good life since. A beautiful voice but it was too powerful and she was too fat. I am sure she does well in Wagner. Maria aside, it was a magical evening. I want my Rusalkas to be credible. Eva Džízgová-Jirušová, in her day was a perfect Rusalka. She wouldn't dream of playing Rusalka today. No matter how much she meaninglessly waves her hands, until Renée learns some Czech and comes to understand Rusalka, the vulnerable, pensive water spirit, "He comes here often. He throws his clothes on the bank. He swims within my embrace, But ... to him .... I am just a ripple", she will never make a credible Rusalka. What I have written here in no way takes away from Renée's magnificent voice, she just does not understand Rusalka.
