I just lost everything in a house fire this past Monday, except for 85% of my graphic novels and action figures. It's mostly smoke damage, the fire just went around my action figures and my graphic novel collection (thank god). thank you for making this video I really appreciate it.

I must say that this really helped me with my problem, therefore, I'm really thankful for your tip + video! I tried it with recently-purchased vinyl records that came from an obvious heavy chain-smoker, and it worked great! I just opened up the bag and took a peep to see the progress and the ashtray stench is gone a good 90%. I've resealed it and I'm leaving it to sit for another 3 days, or so. Really good tip with very positive results!

This is a useful tip. I've never considered dryer sheets. I have had similar results with crumpled up newsprint, but that can take several weeks...

I can confirm. Dryer sheets work great. I recommend Lenor, if you can get them in the US. I use a normal carrier bag and tie two knots in it.

That happened to me this fall when I bought a box of used manga about 4 towns away. I didn’t realize the Smokey/old bookstore smell until I was home. I cleaned all the books with a cloth and pledge. Then I put them in a large tote with Gonzo odor air magnet left it for little over a week and it worked like a charm. I was going to use bounce sheets but was worried they’d smell like bounce. It’s nice to know the bounce smell goes away too.

I do something similar whenever I ship a book that I sell on eBay or Amazon. I do kind of like what you do with the sheets, then I put it in a paper lunch bag, and then a polymailer. I noticed that the paper bag kind of absorbs some of the scent from the sheets, and kind of helps the cover get deodorized as well.

Just tried this. After 10 days in a container with a dryer sheet in 40 manga volumes it has stained two pages in each book...

Thank you very much for the dryer sheet tip. I recently got brand new copies of Aria: The Masterpiece manga and they smelled odd probably because of the sellers house. I used two sheets for each book and wrapped them in a garbage bag for 4 days, and they came out smelling close to brand new.

I just received a few smoke smelling manga books from a seller. So this video came at the right time, haha. Like you said, I’ve had them sitting in a zip lock bag with a few dryer sheets. I also found a box of baking soda in the cleaning section that has removable sides. The box has a net keeping the powder in the box. I’ve had it set up for a few days. Hoping to get them smelling better next weekend.

I'm usually use baking powder for my little brother's shoes when that thing get smelly due to poor drying, it works magnificently but i never try to use it on my book collection. I think i will try it then, thanks for the information 😁

Bounce sheets in u shape in each book. I will also use those scented kitchen trash bags instead of regular trash bags.

I bought a book which was a gift for some one I had done some family history for, writen by a relative of theirs, some 52 years earlier, the pages were quite dirty, and dusty, and was horrified that it smelled so bad, -dont get me wrong i was used to the usual musty odour, this item I could tell had been stored in an old property, or out building for a long time - the book was rare, but not at all cheap, I used isopropanol on the closed or outer edges of the pages, worked really well, [ and some suggest light sandpaper will do a great job on stuborn marks] , the smell disapears almost immediately, and next day it's a regular book smell, but will bare in mind the above video recommendations for any other purchases! thanks bare in mind DON'T KNOW ABOUT COMICS that's a whole new problem -

I've recently used a small, thin air freshener from a car wash facility for a copy of Jupiter's Legacy (*the first issue, not a paperback collected edition) I ordered from eBay. Then I put it with a comic in a mylar comic bag to seal it and help contain the clean smell.

I wrapped my book in press and seal paper with the dryer sheets to help keep things sealed off. Placed in ziploc as well.

Iv been doing that but i tested a book first as my book was a vintage books with Coloured photos inside of it i put 30 sheets in one book hahahah i could not wait 10 days though it took me a day to clear the musty charity shop smell out of it . very happy . ps love the beard .

I've never had the odour problem aside from some new books that have an unusual smell that isn't indicative of a new book. I just feel like with dryer sheets there is a oily byproduct similar to perfume or similar fragrance. I'd be worried about something leeching into the book similar to oil staining. Maybe you can correct me because this does sound like a great idea that I'll have to remember at some point.

I’ve also noticed that I’ve received books that smell like an Asian style cooking twice now. (Not a great book smell) I’m using these sheets and a charcoal deodorizer bag so very hopeful it works out!

I honestly thought i would never get a smoke smelling book ever when I first saw this but after 16 years of collecting I just got my first smoke smelling book luckily is one of the thin "sample sized" volumes of pokemon Black & white so it should be fairly easy to remove the smell w/ this method

I'm a historical collector, and I collect certain old books..some of which will smell strongly of cigarette smoke. I actually live in Australia, so dryer sheets are an uncommon sight, but I was able to get them from costco. Dryer sheets may help removing the original bad smell of the books, but they have their own smell, which is also not desired. Somebody suggested kitty litter. Haven't tried it yet.

smoke smell is nothing compared to, the printers ink which is a millions worse, they use strong perfume to mask the smell of the toxic ink, any ideas to remove this?

I experienced that with the first 26 volumes of One Piece. They smelled like cigarettes. I kept the volumes for a few months and then I sold them.

I got a comic from Ebay that smelled pretty bad. Which made me google the issue...which led me here. I'm gonna try the Bounce method, hope it works!

My brand new board game has an icky cardboard smell--such a bummer. I'm going to try this--fingers crossed that it works!

If this tip works it will probably save me several hundred dollars if this also works for like electronics, shoes, paperback books and pleather. I was stuck in this cigarette smelling apartment for most of 2020 after a failed attempt to move overseas (and yes the majority of my things were on a different continent when I was in the ashtray apartment so thankfully not everything I own smells like that) and while I did just about every trick in the book to deordorize the place, after I have moved out my things still smell like cigarettes. I'm currently in quarantine overseas (second try's the charm?) so I can't run out or even order any deordorizers without it costing me an arm and a leg but we do have dryer sheets! I will try this trick and give an update in a couple of weeks.

This is a very pricy thought, but I wonder if using an ozone generator machine will remove the scent. You can put multiple books in a boxed container with the machine to do it’s magic. It’s super overkill but I guess it’s fine if you buy used bulk on the norm.
