Actually, no. Perhaps you're thinking of Surround Trax? PFM sound is a pre-DCC system. The sounds are encoded on a high frequency carrier which is super imposed on DC/analog track voltage. The sounds come, mostly from sound loops on several cassette tapes. The great quality comes from two things (imo anyway): First it's On3 so Jim is able to install much larger speakers in the loco tenders than you could in HO. Second, the command station allows the operator to really play with the whistle!

#481 is a Durango and Silverton locomotive now, i got it in N scale on a Highline diorama. Edit: I’m getting a used bachmann spectrum D&RGW on3 tomoro, a lot less of a train than this guy has, but I’ll have some fun!

PSC made them in the 1990ies and Swng converted a small no of their subsidary Iron horse models into it in early 2004

This is an On3 layout that was built many years ago now. Flex track for On3 wasn't available then, so this is most likely handlaid. You can buy On3 flex track from San Juan Car Co now: www.sanjuancarco.com/on3-flex-track-25-pieces/

Can you tell me what length ties are being used?

On3 is 3/4" between the rails (1/4" per foot) and the ties look like they're about 1.5" long (6 feet).

Yes I know On3 is 3/4" track gauge. I was curious as to the tie length. It looks great. I just can't decide if I want to use 6', 6.5', or 7' ties. If I go 6' I'm definitely going to use San Juan.
