Im a Mexican guy (light skin)who in his teens never knew about that until my 18's. I lived in various states of Mexico and , at least, in the 90's "men dont need femenine products" type of mentality was quite predominant so no one in the family teach me what lotion was really for. White people are generally built for cold/dry environments. I know people like to deny genetics but we mostly dont need it. The military has confirmed that people with ancestral heritage from tropical environments are much more likely to get frostbite.

Love that you reacted to this one. So, let me present my bonafides here. I'm a white dude, living in Arkansas. My wife and I moved to a city called Pine Bluff years ago, the population split at the time was 96% black, 4% other. I was the minority of the other. Finding work was a job in itself initially, I finally landed a job at a Taco Bell (my wife worked for the school, which is what brought us there in the first place). I was the only non black person working in the restaurant for 2 years, and we had these locker cubbies for people to put their phones, clothes, purses, etc while on the job. And I noticed early on everybody had a bottle of lotion. Most had the exact same bottle actually. And my "learning" about lotion happened as a result. One of the girls asked me one day if she could touch my elbow, and I said sure. She did, then laughed and shouted "He's ashy as hell!" They all chipped in and bought me a bottle of Aveeno with Cocoa Butter and Aloe. That was 12-13 years ago. I'm not ashy anymore, and I miss the hell out of everyone there. And I agree with Bill on this one, we could all benefit from spending more time with other people.

I agree that a little forced diversity is good for everyone. I grew up in a very white small Ohio town outside of Cincinnati and even when I lived downtown and had black neighbors for the first time it was easy to see them as out to get me. I had some great neighbors who tried to help me out when I started getting robbed but being in the only white guy in my neighborhood wasn't making my life any easier, nor would I expect it to. A few years later I enlisted in the Navy, and while that was a terrible decision of biblical proportions, the greatest thing about being enlisted in any branch is that most of the people you'll be working with on a daily basis are nonwhite and completely comfortable giving you a glimpse into their culture, upbringing, everything. Except for the air force, that is. I spent some time on an army base with a lot of air force guys and they're very much still holding it down for the whities of the world.

40 year old white woman, raised using Dove soap all over, Jergens lotion on my hands in winter, and Clinique moisturizer on my face starting in 8th grade. My father taught me about lotion in winter, because his hands and mine would Crack and bleed otherwise! I had no idea you could use lotion on your body or legs until college, when my older cousins married two awesome black women, in one summer I learned my frizzy red hair was gloriously curly with Deep Conditioning and my skin didn't itch with Lotion! Bless the Good Hair book, and my extended family.

Yep, me too. I do remember a girlfriend (thinking of becoming a beautician) back when I was around 18, telling me about how important it was. Sadly, the example she cited was some woman who was in her 50s, but looks in her 40s after a lifetime of using lotion/ moisturizing. (but at 18, BOTH 40s & 50s are ANCIENT, so I didn't care) I only was reminded a handful of years ago. (both from this Bill Burr bit, but also some research I did that hangnails came from dry fingers) I use lotion now. (but even so, only from time to time)

I'm mixed race (African, Indian & European) and never used lotion until late in my life. Living in the tropics, where you sweat a lot and dry skin is less of a problem, it never occurred to me that I need to moisturise. It was only when I moved to Europe that dry skin became a problem and, as Bill said, I thought it meant the towel was dirty!!! Then finally, after living with someone who mentioned my ashiness, it dawned on me that I needed to apply cream (still don't use enough all over my body, though).

It's true, I didn't use lotion until I attended a live Janeane Garofalo stand-up show in downtown LA where she went on a similar rant - but in her version it was directed to men. Someone pointed out to me once that if I scratch my dry skin it doesn't leave a mark, so lotion isn't as obvious of a necessity. I was also about 33 when I started using it.

yup ... also didn't use lotion. As kids, we used face cream in winter to avoid frostbite when going outside. Now I'm 34 and I started experimenting with lotion during winter when I get itchy everywhere.

I'm there with ya bud. Started losing my hair in my early 20s. Thinned out in the front, I've been shaving my head twice a week since. Don't need hair to look good.

Well. I learned something today. I'm ashy. I did not know that. Other than on my face I never use lotion. My husband, who is Maltese, lovingly calls me Snow White. So I guess it's true. Note to self, buy a vat of lotion. 😁

Bill Burr's newest stand-up on Netflix, in my opinion, is his best ever. It's called Paper Tiger. Absolutely epic! My favorite skit from the stand-up is when he talks about men pushing their feelings down inside, while their significant other deals with shit in real time 😂 It's so true!

First off: I LOVE watching your reaction videos! I just found them so I'm obviously a year late. 🥰 When I started school I was the only white kid so I can confirm that black girls do tell their other friends if their legs or arms are ashy. They asked why I didn't have ashy legs but we discovered I actually did. Like you said you just can't see it as well. They were also amazed at how soft my hair is and doesn't stay in place when they'd wrap it around their finger, while I was jealous of all the things they could do with theirs. But I also saw how much they have to go through for general hair care due to it being so brittle in many cases. I'm grateful I grew up with the opportunity to learn at a young age about differences and similarities between us girls and people in general, but especially the ashy part. I'm now 50 and don't look it (thanks to them) and my profile pic was taken only a few months ago. Even my husband didn't understand the lotion thing until I did the fingernail test on his arm the comedian mentioned. Now he knows EXACTLY what soap and lotion I use.🤣

Bill knows about these things because he is married to the lovely Nya and they have been together for a better part of 20 years or so. And they now have 2 kids too. This is why his stories about the black community are on point as he is talking from personal experience... Bill has found the love of his life, they are a perfect match. He keeps her in check and she does the same for him...

I'm a 30 year old Latino adopted and raised in a white family. I didn't know a thing about wearing lotion until I dated a black girl, never ever crossed my mind or was instructed on it lol. And like Bill, I never heard the term "ashy" until then either lol.

I just figured this out in the last few years. Winter was rough. Skin started splitting I was so dry. Then I finally realized the same thing was going on with my scalp. I now shave my head specifically so I can lotion it, cuz nothing else works. No I can wear a winter hat without itching my head every 5 minutes.

More Burr! As a 32 year old white man, I can sadly confirm this💯😂😂 I almost NEVER use lotion and don't know why🤣🤣 But I do notice a difference when I lotion over my tattoos, they get much darker because the ash is gone🤣😂🤣😭

I love Bill Burr, and this is a great bit. I think the not using lotion thing is specifically white MEN (white women DO moisturize). Frankly I think white guys would see using lotion as effeminate (it really isn't, but I think that's the perception).

Just to answer you, I discovered lotion THIS YEAR, I'm 27 years old, lmao. It's true, I've never seen people "around" me, to be more precisely, using lotion for that specific reason so I wasn't taught as a good thing for your skin, which is insane hearing/listening to Bill Burr talking about that. Thank god I did learn about it, tho! haha Great reaction.
