She jokes a LOT. "Jolene" is extremely exaggerated. It was never an issue. Dolly just put her humor into it. This performance was in 1988. This is still one of the most requested of her songs. And she's still going strong. "Coat of many colors" is a sweet memory of her childhood. Also, when you look into her further, you'll notice how flashy she is. She says "Hey. It takes a lot of money to look this cheap." Not afraid to joke about herself. Everyone loves Dolly.

@@ridingtheroad185 No problem. So many people think that Dolly beat them(bank teller & husband) up. Dolly likes to joke. Dolly Parton is story teller and had written 3000 songs by 1979. Her song “Coat of many Colors” is a true story and I would recommend live performances. I highly recommend “Dolly Parton’s Stairway to Heaven” (cover).

Dolly wrote this song the same night that she wrote "I Will Always Love You"...yeah, that song...the one that Whitney Houston covered years later. Dolly took it to the top of the country charts THREE times herself though. You should listen to the original recording from the early 70s vs. the 80's version here.
@kittenklub1964
@kittenklub1964 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed! I love the original '70's version of 'Jolene' - it has a layered richness to it, complimented by Dolly's pure sweet voice. She's excellent live. no denying that, but Jolene has an amazing quality (intimacy?) that loses something with a live band 'over-playing' it....if that makes sense. But I could listen to Dolly forever....and I'm normally here for Eminem reactions!

I love the why she wrote the song. It wasn't a romantic love song, she wrote it for Porter Wagner. He was a big country and gospel musician way back in the day. He was kind of a surrogate father for her in the industry, he gave her her first real start, and when she really started to get famous, he told her that she had outgrown him, so she wrote that song to thank him and let him know that she would never forget what he had done for her.

Dolly Parton is a genuinely good and decent human being. Among many things she’s selflessly done, for every child born in TN she sends them a book a month until they are school age from her Imagination Library. She also more recently donated a cool million dollars to the research & invention of the Moderna Covid vaccine, and now is listed in the New England Journal Of Medicine forevermore, credited as a contributor of that medical breakthrough.

Dolly also provides a $500 scholarship to every student in Sevier County, TN who wished to attend the nearby Hiwassee College, in an effort to boost graduation rates in the region and improve college attendance. Also, every year, five high school seniors in Sevier County, Tennessee, are awarded the Dolly Parton Scholarship, which provides $15,000 for each recipient to pursue a college education. The scholarship is, according to the Dollywood Foundation, given to students who “have a dream they wish to pursue and who can successfully communicate their plan and commitment to realize their dreams.”

Dolly is still married to the same man for 54 years now. The song is about her being on the road and away from her husband so long. It's about her own insecurities she had to overcome. I'm not saying her husband wasn't a flirt, but lets say they both have had an "arrangement" that's allowed their marriage to hold up all these years.

Dolly Parton built her theme park very specifically where it is to help the people of that impoverished region. She provides endless financial aid to those in need, especially in the East TN mountain region. She firmly speaks out for equality and human rights for every one. She has always been a savvy businesswoman, and woe to anyone who underestimates the brilliant mind under the wigs and makeup. What has always made this song so relatable is that even DOLLY can look like she does and still feel threatened by another woman's beauty. Dolly is the kind of woman who can just exist and make many other women feel inadequate. She's not just phenomenally pretty and cute, but her body has always been so vampy. But it's her sweet personality that balances it out, so she's not coming across as pornographic or trying too hard. Also, the song is vulnerable-- it's not "Back off bitch, he's mine---" it's "Please don't take him just because you can." You have to be a confident woman to admit that someone else has power over you, even in a song. Great choice, Dolly IS in your wheelhouse and now you know why she's such a legend!

Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline ... these ladies sang about their lives and brought all of us along with them. I had the privilege of seeing all of these ladies when I was very little. And no, that is Dolly's body. She had that body when I was a toddler, lol, and seeing her live at Opryland and the Grand Ole Opry!

Dolly is a National Treasure!!! There will be millions who weep when she is gone. She is beautiful, a humanitarian, funny, sweet and talented beyond anyone. Dolly started out with the Porter Wagoner Show (now he had some flashy clothes!) dolly once said in an interview, “It cost me a lot of money to look this trashy.” Referring to her makeup and big hair and flashy clothes. Who doesn’t Love Dolly???

I have such fond memories of this song. I first heard it when it was released. My uncle was a jazz lover, but he had a job as a DJ at a local country music station on the radio. My mom would have my three year old brother call in and request this song. He grudgingly played it and we loved it. She is a true lady, gracious with the cutest giggle. There’s no one like her. When I lost my hair with lupus, I decided to go big with a blonde wig. She was my inspiration. A great story teller and all around lovely human being. Very self deprecating and constantly joking, which includes the “beat the tar out of him” quip. Some of her quotes are priceless. My favorite is “it costs a lot of money to look this cheap.” And she’s still hip today, with her amazing philanthropic work and involvement in current social causes. Can’t say enough about her. Thanks for the reaction. 💕

💕Love your channel! Dolly Parton not only is one of the best singer and song writers of all time. She is an extremely savvy business woman. She wrote a song that Elvis wanted to sing and buy … she said “no.” She keeps the rights to her songs hence she has done beyond well. Besides any of that they gives hundreds of thousands of books and money toward literacy. Above that she gives without having her name put on a building. She gives from her heart. Her kindness is boundless and I believe if you listened to any of her songs they will move you. She came from abject poverty. Beyond poverty. The song “Coat of Many Colors “ is a true story/song of a coat her mom sewed for her to go to school. It will bring you to tears. Very well known song. She is a beautiful person outside but she is a beyond beautiful human being inside. 💕💕💕Oh she did none of those things such as beating . They are still very happily married to this day in October of 2021. That’s her humor. Yes he has thousands of wigs…. Well you just have to know her …💕💕💕💕💕

Dolly grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of East TN. In a large and very poor, poverty stricken family and community. She has been so generous with her success in contributing to helping, who she calls, her people. She built Dollywood in her home area to provide a place for her family that is still there and all the other people of the mountains, to give them a place to work and earn a living. When the Smoky Mountains caught fire and spread through Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and surrounding areas, she came running to help. She has a big heart for those that struggle. Because she lived that life and knows what it is like. Most all of the old time country and bluegrass artist, came from a very poor life. Like Loretta Lynn’s song that she wrote about her life, Coal Miners daughter.

Just my two cents- if this is the first time hearing this song, the live performance here is not gonna give you the full impact. For one, the story in the beginning is obviously a joke and undercuts the emotional resonance of the lyrics. Also, that guitar riff is *legendary* and should be appreciated all on its own (rather than having dialogue over it, like here). Fun fact- when Porter Wagoner wanted to produce the track, he was trying to teach that riff to a studio player and Dolly was upset that he just wasn't getting it, so she grabbed the guitar and played it and that's the take they used.

my dad loved the hell out of her it took a while but she grew on me she is still so pretty but her i think she was at her peak esthetically here she minded her looks well but i could listen to her on a blacked out room with a blind fold on today she makes me want to hug her and never let go i wouldn't have wanted the life she chose but i would have followed her any where if she just ask or at least i feel that way today. she wore her fame on her sleeve it was her way of being publicly humble and people loved her for that alone. she had a number of her own shows on tv over the years and i don't think my dad missed one episode and if he did he'd get pretty cranky about that quiet as he was he's let you know about that one. anyway she's a treasure grounded in bluegrass and the sunshine that made every thing in the appellations grow.

Dolly Parton is a literal rags-to-riches success. She was born in 1946 in a one-room cabin on the bank of a river in rural Tennessee, one of 12 children. She talks about her father paying the doctor that delivered her with a bag of cornmeal because there wasn't any money. (Not so uncommon in the rural south back then.) Not only did she rise through her talent, she has given back to the people of Tennessee over the years (rebuilding homes after a fire, etc.) She is, as you say, a commendable person. Oh, and the tall tales she's telling are part of Scots-Irish/Mountain culture. She didn't really beat her husband up.

Dolly Parton is one of those genuinely good people. She has a foundation that sends out free children's books to kids from Birth to age 5 from her Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. All a parent needs to do is to send her a letter or sign up on her website. Last year she hit the milestone of giving away her 150 millionth Book!! Last year, Dolly Parton donated $1 million to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, which worked with the drug maker Moderna to develop one of the first coronavirus vaccines to be authorized in the United States. These are just some of the many charitable acts that she does.
