This is my grandmother.....she turned 100 2 days ago...must be the spunk that got her to 100.....either that or good Italian genes.....by the way, she always had a good singing voice.

As a millennial, it's appealing to me as well. This moment is very spontaneous and feels so organic. Just an everyday American, who can very well be the grandma next door who happens to be naturally talented given her 15 minutes of fame. You can tell the sweet lady has natural charisma, confidence, and wit. She doesn't have to act like an obnoxious moron for attention. Also, Carol Burnett knows how to defer the spotlight and allows the lady to have her moment. Plus, the audience is respectful. They are not pushed to act excessively for the cameras. The result of all that is television gold.

One thing I'd say to this is that all generations highly value authenticity, so tons of millennials and zoomers would actually agree with this in that sense. Over time almost all TV has become as sanitized as a NASA clean room.

Carol just talked about this on Conan O'Brien's podcast. This lady was gold! Should have been in the cast.
@papagena12 ай бұрын
I was just listening to Conan and I couldn’t believe when she she started talking about this, because I stop remember it from watching it in TV as a kid in the 70s! I remembered it better than Carol did! I remember the lady was mad that Carol sang the the wrong note, and Carol said I’m sorry! And they went back and did the ending a second time!

"Angel Goldstein" I don't know much about music. What is it about the key of G that makes it funny?
@mrmdoze3 жыл бұрын
@@obscurelyvague it's funny not because of the key of G, but rather because this lady was so specific with her request that it seemed she had planned this in advance or was just super eager/confident...
@JavierArveloCruzSantana2 жыл бұрын
The reason I laughed at that very specific request is because Dorothy (Bea Arthur) did that in an episode. Remember the Rusty Anchor episode where she outshined Blanche (Rue) and said something like ... No. What makes you think I sing? ... "D flat is good for me!" Brilliant!
@adrian9932 жыл бұрын
@@obscurelyvague To request a specific key means that she is definitely NOT an amateur singer. She's sung this song before, or is a professional...that's why Carol is laughing.

@BTURNER19612 ай бұрын
There was another such occasion in 1977. A member of the audience asked Carol how he might go about auditioning to sing for her show. Carol said 'well come on up! " and Dennis Ammack(I am guessing from what it sounded like on the clip) sang 'What I did for Love' from Chorus Line. Before he was done, he was joined on stage by Steve Lawerence and of course Carol. He was pretty damn good too, but he sure was nervous. Its the last thing he expected but he got one hell of a memory and story.

I remember when this actually aired. Back then, most people didn't have VCRs, so, 'til I just saw it (a few minutes ago) on TV, I'd forgotten about it. I'd love to hear what ever became of Ms Terry McCann (if that's her correct spelling). She really has so much (I hate to say the word)...'spunk', as did the lady from the easy coast, who - in typical New York-ese. I also Render a tiny woman from an audience (several years earlier), and the reason I remember her, odd because Carol LOVED her name; 'Theresa Renteria'. Theresa was only about 17-ish, and Carol loved cunning up with puns in her name, etc, but Terry McCann, here is priceless.
