Having worked for a municipal police dept, between 1998 and 2000 when we had both of those vehicles in the fleet at that time (Caprices were sent to surplus in 2000), the Chevys were in for service more often and longer than the Fords. That reason is why we dumped the Chevy; low reliability and high cost of repair. When I started we had the Caprices with the rear tire covers; pure junk compared to the Ford and the agency quickly began switching to the Fords in 1995. The Ford was cheaper and faster to fix which was important to us fleet users. I'm not sure where the transmission comments come from; after I worked for the municipal agency I went over to the state patrol and at both agencies we never had transmission problems/reliability in the Ford. I think you have to keep in mind the trans was hammered during its in-service years; foot to floor driving all the time. I've put 300K miles on original 4R70W in Grand Marquis with zero problems. So it really depends on how it lived its life. Most of us found the seat in the Chevy to be inferior to the Ford; too flat and wore out quickly causing you to sink in more each time you sat in it. The Ford's seat was more supportive long term.

I owned a 92 Caprice and I currently own a 99 crown Vic. I prefer the Vic, because it still looks modern. Caprice looks ancient. Edit: I actually prefer the looks of the 80s Caprice over the 90s. Anybody else remember Steven Segal from back in the day. Geno and his brown box Caprice was legendary! " Anybody seen Ritchie???? Anybody knows why Ritchie did Bobby Laboe??? You want my badge? You see this, this badge is your trophy. I'm going to keep coming back here until somebody remembers seeing Ritchie." Out for Justice is the movie, for the younger audience.
@andyb3666 Жыл бұрын
I like both, though as a lifelong Ford guy would choose the Vic 😂but a more like-for-like comparison here would be comparing that Caprice with the previous gen Crown Vic (92-97) since they would be from the same time. The Vic in this video is a newer design than the Caprice.

I live in Finland and had a 1991 Chevy Caprice Classic that was sold new here with the "police suspension" I got the car in 2009 with 170000miles and sold it in 2020 with 220000miles, I got a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis with 21000miles in 2018 as my new daily driver. Its funny how basically similar these cars are but yet different! The Chevy was so much bigger and the trunk was insanely big ( I did not even have to fold the stroller to get it in :D. But the Chevy and Panther platform cars arereally different to drive. Both are easy to work on and parts were cheap on the Chevy and easily available in Finland when they were sold as new here, Ford, Mercury and Lincolns were not so they cost more and are harder to find. In the Chevy I had the 305 TBI with 170hp and the Mercury has the 4.6l V8, I got the same fuel economy on both cars. I had a 94 Z28 Camaro with the LT1 and if it has been maintained badly it will be a bitch and the water-pump and optispark combination sucks, however the LT1 is a wonderful motor! On the Caprice you have basically to manufacture some body parts from scrap, there were replacement body parts available but there is no more... I love both of these cars, they are fucking awesome!

I drove both extensively in the 90’s. There was no comparison to the performance of the 9C1. In fact, when the new Fords came out, the rookies got stuck driving ‘em because no one would give up their 9C1. The opti was a terrible design and the Caprices were badly rust prone. Nonetheless, they ruled the road in the 90’s IMO.

@ericsfishingadventures44333 жыл бұрын
This is just me but if you can find a good deal on a crown vic, grand marquis, any p71 car yes they can be great cars. Just remember they are high horsepower V8! Rear wheel drive vehicles! And can be very unwieldy/hard to control vehicles in tough road conditions such as rain and snow especially. So for a new driver I'd just be careful. But if you have experience in those driving conditions with a V8 rwd vehicle than yes go for it!

I love my 95 caprice both have been in this world for a long but ill give my point to the caprice because its near the extinction list and for a little something I heard from a cop where I live he said "the caprices were the best car to have fun in compare to the crown vic and wishes to drive one again." Right there says a lot and hopefully someday he'll get that chance.
