I teach slightly older (4/5 combo) and instead of a physical gift, each kid gets "Birthday Minutes" where they can choose an activity for the whole class to do together. This might be a read aloud of their favorite book, playing a game, a dance party, etc. There are limits (no screens, must be an activity that everyone can do, no food because of school policy), and I give them some possible ideas, but they are otherwise free to choose. It's free, a great community builder, and feels special to them!

This past year, I created a “Birthday Box” and went to the dollar store and put a lot of different things in it. When it’s a student’s birthday, they get a card and choose something from the birthday box. They can also choose to wear a crown ( editable ones I got from TPT). They really enjoy this! I teach first grade too, and love all your videos!

Been binging your videos lately!!! For birthdays, I write my kids a personalized card and leave it on their desk with a rubber “happy birthday” bracelet hanging on the corner of the card. A coworker of mine decorated a chair with puffy paint that just said “the birthday chair” or something and allowed the birthday kid to do all the junior teacher things that day (passing papers, delivering messages, etc)

For my birthdays, I would take pics of the kids the first day of school and enlarge just their head, print off and cut out. Then also on the first day of school I would have all kids decorate birthday crowns. It was good for name practice, etc. I would then put up their enlarged face pictures up above my white board (or someplace high where they could be in birthday order). Below their picture I would also put their birthdate. Finally, I would pin the crown above their enlarged head. I would pin it so it would pop out of the wall 3-D style. It was a good visual reminder for me and kids were always excited to wear their crown!

I give a birthday gift- I make a little gift bag with little party favor toys and I usually include a mini playdoh pot, fancy pencil (that they aren't allowed to use in school), and bookmark. I have a birthday bear that sits at their seat for the day that has been used for years, and one of their favorite things about the day. I make the birthday bags as part of my classroom setup each August so they are ready to go before school starts. I am very forgetful, especially about what day it is and can easily miss a student's birthday, but with everything ready to go, I never do!! I probably spend about $30-40 each year on the birthday bags, but some stuff lasts into the next year's birthday bags and extra pieces that aren't enough for a whole class set for another year go into my treasure box to help fill that out too.

I don’t do birthday gifts, but we make a treat on each birthday (usually cupcakes, but sometimes different). Also have a birthday hat that some kids like to wear. I like someone else’s idea of “birthday minutes” and might try to incorporate that this year! Have to say, the little stuffies you shared are sooo cute and cheap and I know know know they would be a hit, so…maybe changing things up this year…

I don’t usually give birthday gifts. I’m not consistent with it, and I don’t want to hurt a child’s feelings because I forgot about their birthday. This past year I did give a special pencil to each child for their birthday. I did miss a couple but made sure to do it when I remembered.

Genuine question from a parent. Why do the supply list require so much if it seems like most teachers still have a lot of unused supplies from the past school year?
@TheNDTeacher
@TheNDTeacher 10 ай бұрын
"Most teachers" is a stretch. Mayleen has a lot stored, but I don't, and I personally don't know anyone else that does. I never have enough of anything and often have to buy it myself or my kids go without. Parents never get anything on my supply list that we actually need, but will buy 10 different paper folders that will last a month, and spiral notebooks after I specifically asked them not to. I am very envious of Mayleen having everything she needs for her kids and plenty extra because that isn't the reality for anyone I know or myself. I spent at least $200 this year getting my students what they needed, very basics like scissors, glue and composition notebooks, and we STILL don't have everything. I asked parents to bring tissue and literally one parent brought ONE box of tissues that will last less than a week. Please don't make such rash assumptions about teachers and classrooms just because Mayleen has all the things. I am however glad that you're at least looking at the supply list your child needs and presumably getting the things on it, because I'm pretty sure most of my families didn't even look at the supply list even though I handed it them in-person, physically, during open house.

I’ve always done birthday gifts. In past years, sometimes the bday gift from me is the only special thing they got that day. I get most of my supplies from the dollar tree. I use the red/white stripped popcorn bag with a tag that says “hope your birthday is popping!” Then I add all things that pop: microwave popcorn, bubbles, pop rocks, ring pop, popper tube toy, blow toy and birthday pencil. Sounds like a lot, but when you buy bulk and cheap it’s like $2-3 per student.

umm...It would be cheaper for elementary and lower grades, but secondary grades? Nope. No gifts. I put their birthdays on my lesson PowerPoint (it stays up all week) and we say Happy Birthday. I refuse to afford 120+ gifts for teens. lol...
