I don't care. I love this video and that he did this show because I was able to see him again. I think he was wonderful, and whether people are being picky about his singing or not, I'm glad that this wonderful entertainer, my favourite, struggled through a show he didn't want do do, or need to do just because he was such a nice guy. Not sure what you mean by "what he became"? To the very end, Dean was self-depracating, but always gave his all to his fans - and we loved him for it. I'd defy most of today's performers to continue - and be universally appreciated - in the way Dean and Elvis did. Physically, they may have been a shadow of their former selves, but genuine and giving, to their respective ends - and never deserted by their loyal fans

Though Dean wasn't in good health at this point, this clip shows he still had charisma, stage presence and gave it his best shot. He left mostly because the tour had become a typical frenetic Sinatra/Sammy pace. At his age he wasn't in need of it or up to it and quickly had enough.

@BurnsideKing You don't have to have been born in any particular time to appreciate art. The time is now and is your time to enjoy it. While it would have been great to see them perform live, most of my favorite artists were dead before I was born, but I have been lucky enough to see Sinatra and Tony Bennett.

This is actually a pretty good performance. It's true that his health began to really fail around this time. He was suffering from emphysema and a kidney ailment, plus he was still reeling from the loss of his son, something he never got over. His physical appearance and slow, unsteady movements clearly show his poor state of health and make this difficult to watch. However, if you close your eyes and just listen to the audio, his vocals are pretty much spot on and he could still make a song sound pretty. He was behind the music a few times, but he recovers well and makes it work. A few factors contributed to this not being the ideal performance or tour for Dean. First, is his poor state of health; he really did not have the energy to undertake such a tour. Second was the decision to play large stadiums in the round, rather than theaters or smaller venues. Dean seems to be thrown off and disoriented/distracted by trying to play to the audience all around him; I think if he had stayed in one place and performed like on a traditional stage, he would have faired a little better. Volume proved a problem for him in the stadiums as well. Third was the fact that he was without his musical director and on stage foil, Ken Lane. Why he was excluded from the tour is a mystery to me. Frank and Sammy both had their people, why didn't Dean? He would have done much better with Ken Lane on the stage with him. And fourth, I'm not sure people understood his show. He did many of the same jokes and bits he had been doing for years, but people unfamiliar with his show would not know that. Given his poor physical condition and his disorientation with playing in the round, I think many assumed he was drunk and not with it when he was doing these bits. I saw him 2 years after this concert, in Las Vegas in June 1990, and the show was great. He sounded good, had his wit and sense of playful humor, and didn't struggle at all like he did here; he was back in his element, Ken Lane was there, and I think he just felt more comfortable. He probably should have never gone on this tour; however, if you listen to the performance itself closely and look past his physical condition, I think you will find that the performance is better than it appears. Dean loved performing, loved his audience and fans, and had a gift that still showed through even in the less than ideal situation he found himself in here.
@paulbrislen148410 ай бұрын
I have asked some old time Vegas folks about Ken Lane not being on the tour and was told his health wasn’t any better than Dean’s and he and his Drs didn’t feel he was up to the grind.

Dean looks so sad during much of this concert. He was devastated when his son, Dino, was killed in a plane crash a year earlier. Frank brought him along on this tour to try to cheer him up. Dean just wasn’t into it. He left the tour and was replaced by Liza Minnelli. To be fair to Dean, when you lose a child, sometimes there is no return for some parents. Rest In Peace Dean.👍
