A couple of years ago I installed a MSD fuel injection system on my 1971 Chevy C20. This was a huge change from the stock carburetor but it had a couple of small issues. I had trouble starting it when the engine was hot so I changed a few things and now it is running great. Maybe my solutions can help you if you are having issues.

That is a nice set up You have good performance and I am sure you do get good mileage for a big block ..Good tip on showing the rubber grommet to run wires through the fire wall and I see you have a fuel filter before and after the pump

I think the mileage is better but I find the more power I get, the heavier my foot becomes. I have not got much driving in since the intake upgrade but I do hope that it helps a bit with the mileage. Have to wait till spring now.

The main reason I went with the MSD EFI was that i did not have to have a return line to the fuel tank. I went with the pulse modulating pump. If you can go with a pump in your tank, that is better. I bought my system a few years ago so I would imagine they are better now. I have not gone through any reviews lately so I can't comment on the best system out there. I am glad I switched, makes my truck more drivable. Thanks. Stevo

Hey Steve I’m in the process of installing one on my sbc with HEI. What wire goes to the tach port on the HEI? What did you do for the tachometer? Thanks
@stevoj8959

I believe it is the white wire that hooks up to the distributor for the tach. I myself am running an automatic so I do not have a tach but the EFI does require the wire to be hooked up. Hope that helps. Stevo

Nice setup. But for me, I used a 750 holley hp carburetor on top of a aluminum intake with a 1" phenolic spacer and a electric fuel pump. Starts up every time with only a couple pumps, and once you get the correct power valve, jetting, squirters. The throttle response is assume.

I will agree, with the right everything, a carb works just as well. My engine is stock with just a mild cam so I figured there would be a benefit to using the EFI. It still has its quirks but I am quite happy. One thing I still will agree on, a good carb is more dependable. Thanks Stevo

Great info, great review. Thank you for taking the time to post this. I have an 85 K10 here in SoCal. My wife got me this same kit for Christmas. Questions: Ignition - Are you having the MSD EFI system controller your timing? If so, what components do you use (ignition controller, coil and distributor)? And how was that part of the installation? Fuel - What “little issues” are you having with the non-return system? I have dual tanks with return lines (this is the stock configuration). Not sure how that effects the fuel delivery. Thanks again! - Pat
@stevoj8959
@stevoj8959 3 жыл бұрын
I do not have the MSD controller for my timing. I'm using a basic MSD distributor and it seems to work fine for my application. If you can I would go with the return system for the fuel. Any issues that I have had has been with the returnless system. Sometimes the fuel pressure would read wrong and the pump would not turn on. Seemed to have worked some of those bugs out by keeping it cooler. I do love the system.

@stevoj8959
@stevoj8959 3 жыл бұрын
I used the hole in the firewall that was there for the clutch. On the early model chevy's the hole had a plate over it and it looks to be about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. I would drill a hole in a piece of scrap then see if you can get the connector through. At this time I am not adding timing control. Did not think I needed it for my application but If I find out there is a big difference I may change my mind.

If I am pulling my trailer, I get about 10 MPG. Without about 16 but I think I can do better. The EFI made a huge difference in the acceleration so it is very hard to keep the foot off the pedal. Having the engine move forward that one inch was a happy accident. I did not was any big block engine mounts so I modified a set for a 350. I welded them to my welding table and took the hump out to put the dip in and they worked out great. I will agree the original mounts do push the engine back too far. Only thing I had to do was take a bit out of the rad shroud for the alternator. Everything else worked. Hope this helps. Stevo

Hello, One additional benefit of FI is the MAP sensor and computer can adjust (lean out) for altitude changes and carburetor can not. One has to re-jet the carb and change timing for anything over 2,000 feet and things really deteriorate at 5,000 feet (Denver, CO). If you want to head into the mountains to 8,000+ feet with a carb system your engine will run like a dog again. A carb can't match a FI system in this scenario.

Hooking one up now this atomic system on a 454, from the looks of yours, your vacuum advanced is hooked up to the Mani port...in the Manuel they recommend a locked out distributor, and 180 it? If you read the Manuel on the timing section...the atomic will advance spark and retard it when needed, I would take that vacuum off your distributor and follow procedure for the atomic system to control advance timing....for more power and less lag...
