I have one also. It's seven years old now and works very well with Windows 10 and Ubuntu in dual boot. This laptop is also rare because it has four (4) 3.5 mm audio jacks, mic headphone, line out and line in. Thats why I bought it. Where do I find these properties on a new laptop?

@@berrywin you'll be lucky if it has even one 3.5mm jack... also this one has a bunch of USB 3 like 6 of them, HDMI and display port. its a awesome machine

@Juzan Djinn I checked the mobo visually. There is no any component blowned up. I also checked the voltages on the mobo (I am a beginner, so I took some help from a few discord groups), and someone told me this is a chipset problem. There is no cure...

What I've read, is you need to modify the laptop BIOS (good luck, lots of dead threads and linkrot on this topic), and modify the NVidia drivers. It's something I'd like to learn how to do, but the info is scattered and rotten.

There is only two types of MXM graphics cards. Type A and type B. This is the larger one. Mounting holes should be the same on both types. Heatsink differs from type A and B, but not between different cards of the same type. For HP and IBM you are limited to some cards, but is this also the case for MSI?

@@Drottninggatan2017 There's another one actually. NVidia released a new MXM type with their...1000 series? If not that, then the 1600 series. So with newer laptops, they may have this niche MXM type that isn't backwards compatible with the previous MXM A or MXM B cards. Another thing to be mindful of is vrm and memory contact. Might be that the heatsink plate is shaped weirdly and won't match up with some MXM cards.

There are some accounts of ppl changing to 980 or 1060 gpus. There is still a store selling 1080 gpus and offer the install service for this laptop but it cost almost a 11700h and 3070 laptop.

Been upgrading MXM laptops since 2009. If you have no idea what you're doing, that's a "you" problem. It's because of people like you MXM laptops have died out completely. Now, regarding this MS-17851 mobo with SKL-MB: it supports _any_ Maxwell Gen2 and Pascal graphics, as long as they have standard pinout and mounting holes, plus don't require external power, i.e. all power comes from mxm_pwr. But there _is_ an issue of proper vbios selection (not a problem at all if you have experience), plus the fact that EC often limits DC_IN at 180W with anything that is not 1070 or 1080. To fix this, one needs access to FW source and compilation tool+ certificate. Unless someone at MSI leaks that stuff, this particular hurdle will remain. As for the heatsinks, there are 3 different ones. For 1060, 1070 (shown here) and 1080. This 1070 one fits any supported card, except for 1080. Also, a little tidbit about the 1070 shown here- it's a defective 1.0 revision of the board, of which many have stability problems starting around 0.950V-1.000V, so MSI has used a throttled vbios on these. These cards were eligible for replacement with revision 1.2 ones under warranty, though MSI obviously kept it quiet. Just like Samsung with their 870 SSDs manufactured 2021-2022 dying left and right.

@Man Cave Repair: (6:23) I stopped (freezing) the image. I seem to see a square shaped piece of thermal pad on that metal heatsink that has turned white since good quality thermal paste is usually black and gray in color as well. Probably it never received maintenance before until today when it came into the hands of master Sorin. (6:52) In fact, there's almost no trace of thermal paste that such a CPU should have brought with it from the factory. Excellent observation on your part. A sincere congratulations. Nothing wrong with handing laptops. This thing had plenty of use I bet.
