Can't imagine anyone other than Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future. He's perfect in that role.

I love Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings. It gave him the breakthrough in his career he needed. And because he was somewhat an unknown actor at the time, he fits perfectly with the ensemble cast. Like if they did cast a movie star for the part, it would have stuck out as a distraction.

I think that Viggo WAS Aragorn. Big fan of the books. Also SOOOO glad their first choice for Gandalf "declined" (Sir Sean Connery....supposedly, he couldn't understand the script?? Shees... really? It wasn't rocket science... also, he was offered 15% of the GROSS. Dude missed almost $450 MILLION!!!) so that the INCREDIBLE Ian McKellen could step in. WOW! He IS Gandalf. He got soo many nuances, mannerisms, and speech right that it can send chills down my spine. And that fight with the Balrog (which they opened the "Two Towers" with.. a brilliant stroke of Jackson to get us "back" into the movie!!) was sublime!!

The role of Maggie in 1958's Cat on a Hot Tin Roof was originally a vehicle for Grace Kelly. She got married and couldn't accept the role so they cast Elizabeth Taylor. No one could have played Maggie the Cat better than Liz.

Michael J Fox was born to play Marty McFly. And Michael Meyers with the Scottish accent is Shrek. Glad he decided to change it even though they had already recorded everything. I also can’t imagine anyone else as Aragorn or Gandalf. They definitely made the right choices on the end. It’s crazy to see how switching out one actor or an accent can completely change the who feel of a film! I will now spend the next several days binge watching most of these films 😄

Everyone in the LOTR trilogy was perfectly cast! That _"my friends...you bow to no one"_ scene still gives me chills.

I’m so glad Viggo Mortenson took on the role Aragon. I can’t imagine anyone else taking on that role. He was perfect!

One movie that got recasted was Panic Room. It starred Jodie Foster and Kristen Stewart. At first Nicole Kidman and Hayden Panettiere were cast as the mother and daughter in the film but Hayden dropped out of the production before filming began. Then Kristen Stewart got the role. Nicole Kidman left the production after 2 weeks of filming because she got injured on set from an aggravated knee injury that happened while filming Moulin Rouge. Then Jodie Foster got the role of the mother in the film after Nicole left the production.

Again, I prefer Don Cheadle than Terrance Howard in the Marvel franchise. Don fit the role in James Rhodes perfectly.

Holy god I CANNOT imagine anyone other than Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman and MJF as Marty. CANNOT. That would be like recasting Doc from Christopher Lloyd.

They did the same on TV with Full House, they originally had John Posey play Danny Tanner before they got Bob Saget, and on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, they had Audri Dubois play Trini Kwan, before they got Thuy Trang.

I cannot believe you did this list and did not include Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, originally the role was offered to Molly Ringwald who also rejected the part of Molly (the final name was chosen as a revenge) in Gosht that finally was played by Demi Moore

Dougray Scott being unable to play Wolverine in the first X-Men film was not only complicated by his shooting schedule for Mission: Impossible 2, but by an ankle injury he sustained on the set of the latter movie.

Neither Dougray nor Hugh were appropriate for Wolverine they were both totally wrong for the character.

The Aragorn situation has always confused me. Not only was Viggo perfect for the role, but Stuart Townsend was such a baffling choice in the first place. Nothing against the guy but he would have been a terrible Aragorn.

I feel like Shrek wouldn’t sound as deep of a character if you had a screaming gangster like voice rather than the Scottish brogue, we know. Good choice.

It's not just actors. When the first director of The wizard of Oz was replaced, the new director threw out all the footage already filmed because he had dressed Judy Garland in a very adult dress and hairstyle instead of a Kansas farm girl

But that was not uncommon in the Golden Age of Hollywood. Some of the same directors on "The Wizard of Oz" were also in the revolving director's chair of "Gone with the Wind"! And after Victor Fleming did most of the principal work on "Oz", he was called over to save "Gone with the Wind", and King Vidor finished up the Kansas scenes on "Oz".

No disrespect to Eric Stolz, But his cool hair serious type just doesn’t fit the character that Marty Mcfly is meant to be. Michael J Fox really did make him a believable dorky hero near perfectly

For me, the only one that wouldn't matter is Terrance Howard/Don Cheadle. Both played the character equally, IMO.

Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (Jim Carrey, Robert De Niro and Hugh Jackman were all considered to play Jack Sparrow before Depp was cast), Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man (Tom Cruise was one of the few actors who was considered to play Tony Stark for the film), Maggie Gyllenhaal in The Dark Knight (Katie Holmes lost her second chance to play Bruce Wayne's childhood friend and love interest Rachel due to scheduling conflicts), Jamie Foxx in Django Unchained (Will Smith turned it down after trying to change Quentin Tarantino's vision of the film, wanting it to have a more romantic storyline), Mark Ruffalo in The Avengers (Edward Norton parted ways with Marvel after originally playing Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk), Benedict Cumberbatch in Doctor Strange (Joaquin Phoenix was offered to play Dr. Strange but ended up turning it down in favour of Cumberbatch taking the part) and Christopher Lloyd in Who Framed Roger Rabbit (Tim Curry originally auditioned for the part of Judge Doom but producers found his performance to be too scary).

I can not see anyone else play Marty McFly, Wolverine, Aragon and Sheri and of course Indy than Michael J Fox, Hugh Jackman Viggo Mortensen and Mike Myers and Harrison Ford. It’s like they born to play the roles and boy they delivered 😊

I think it's strange to say, that these changes/results ARE responsible for the success. There's no doubt that what we got in all these cases is perfection, or at least very close to it. BUT: No one knows what we would think if the original actor/actress kept/had gotten the part. Maybe we would think more or less the same as we do now, even IF the resulting movie had a different tone. In which case we would [also] think it impossible that anyone else could ever play that iconic role. One of the best examples for this is Spock. For decadex, everyone said that Leonard Nimoy IS the one and only Spock and NO ONE else could've ever played and should ever play that character. Then came Zachary Quinto and Ethan Peck... So who knows what would've been if anyone else had played Spock from the start... Or if anyone else on this list had played the parts they were meant to play originally...

Bette Davis and Joan Crawford were slated to star in Hush...Hush Sweet Charlotte but Olivia De Havilland took over the role of Miriam Deering after shooting began. Joan Crawford was fired from the project. It was for the best.

Thank the gods Nick Cage never got Aragorn and Peter Jackson was smart enough to pass that one over. Probably would have never have watched the trilogies, nor purchased pretty much every new release, re-master, upgrade, director's cut for the last 20 years if Nick had gotten the role. Good financial acumen Pete.

Surprise Sean Connery as James Bond wasn't listed. Ian Fleming was set on Richard Todd (who?) but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts (bet he's kicking his butt now). David Niven, Rex Harrison (Cleo, My Fair Lady, Dr. Doolittle....yep I can see it), but just didn't make the final cut. Richard Burton, James Mason (2000 leagues under the sea), Steve Reeves (Hercules fame) were offered, but all declined. To this day...there's only one Bond....James Bond and that's Connery. Others have come close and especially Craig has done a brilliant job, but there was no better Bond than Sean.

You forgot one - possibly honorable mention - but - Harrison Ford replaced Alec Baldwin as Jack Ryan. Maybe a bit anti-climatic now - since there are more iterations of Jack Ryan now.

Mojo seriously needs to look beyond their limited knowledge of films and try to learn about the classics. I was expecting Shirley Temple for Dorothy in Wizard of Oz to be at least in the top three. I should've known better. 😏

Despite the stories, Temple was never seriously considered for "The Wizard of Oz". The earliest announcements in the Hollywood press listed Judy Garland as Dorothy. Garland was NOT a late replacement. As an Oz fan herself, Temple said she didn't want to play Dorothy, she wanted to meet her!
