But if you know anything about problem-solving in social situations, you know that the worst thing to do is to walk in with ready solutions. Instead, you need to listen to all constituencies. @@ihateshitlibs Candidates with a lot of very precis policies at this point in the race won't likely be able to achieve most of them when they will be president, because they will have to deal with congress, new information not yet available to them at this point; (intelligence meeting ) etc... and then what will happen? The voters will feel cheated. Another reason why some candidates put a very detail sets of policies this early in the race is because, they have nothing else to sell, so they have to come with something to get some attention. I am pretty sure that Pete is very capable intellectually of creating a nice "Power Point" of policies if that what people wants., but right now everything is pointing in the opposite direction.

So you decided to vote for a man that literally has no platform. And he's so young that he also has such a short track record in politics so we have no idea what he is or isn't capable of. You have decided to vote for what exactly? Andrew Yang is more less in the same boat as Pete but at least he has specifically detailed what his plans are. Pete needs to get a platform and fast if he is going to compete with Sanders. Just saying. Because once the primary comes I don't think people are going to vote for nothing. Right now he stands for vague right-ness.

@@jps6709 Pete Buttigieg runs on three major themes: freedom, security, and democracy. The first two were so far claimed mostly by Republicans. So it is a great idea to take it back from them. This is how he can win. Perhaps, most important is Pete’s proposal for deep structural reforms of the democratic system, such as, the Supreme Court, Electoral College, gerrymandering. Without those changes, most of the progressive proposals will fail in Congress or courts. Read about his policies here: peteforamerica.com/issues/
@jps6709
@jps6709 5 жыл бұрын
@@pbtube58 I appreciate what you are trying to do but you are lost, friend. I feel like I have my finger on the pulse of the people voting in the Democratic Primary because I try to expose myself to as many sources as possible, and listen to as many Dem Candidate interviews as I can. I promise I agree that foundational structural reform is definitely what the nation needs. However, the nation has no idea that's what it needs, and when you have a progressive like Sanders that is able to articulate change within the confines of the current system, it doesn't make sense for people to take a step back and change the system first when all the other Dems say they can handle the confines of the current system. I believe that people that support Pete don't really expose themselves that much to other candidates-- and when you surround yourself with Pete nonstop then of course it seems like he has a good chance at winning. In reality he has no chance whatsoever. Pete is wonderful at coming across as a nice guy but he's too nice. He isn't going to actually be able to confront anyone in Washington to enact the structural change America needs. Changing the structure of a city that no one cared about (South Bend was literally one of the worst cities in America so there was nowhere to go but up) and changing the structure of an entire nation is nowhere near the same thing. Not only does Pete not have any actual experience, but he comes across as too nice to fight for the change he's trying to sell. Like I said in my previous comment, Pete is not really advocating for anything that ALL the other Dems aren't also advocating, and since this structural change thing isn't going to catch on until at least 2024's campaigning cycle, we all have to unite. We can't be split up like we were last time with Clinton and Sanders. I feel Andrew Yang is the best candidate but I can swallow my pride and say he cannot win in 2020 and I am supporting Sanders because I can't stomach Biden. Trump is right, Biden DOES have a low IQ. The man almost seems senile. Let's talk more after the coming debates and see if Pete has gained any more traction, but I sincerely doubt he will. And Harris is the exact opposite of Pete and seems borderline berserk. I'm sorry but our only real chance at beating Trump right now is Bernie Sanders; increasing the minimum wage, Medicare for all, free public colleges, and finally properly taxing mega corporations are all things Pete would advocate. So just come to the Sanders side already.
@pbtube58
@pbtube58 5 жыл бұрын
@@jps6709 I appreciate your analysis, and I largely agree with you. Bernie is my second candidate. In terms of the goals, the two are quite similar. I think Pete would be better at implementing his plans. Bernie has more experience, but that is not enough. Ultimately, it is just too early to decide, and if Pete does not break through, I will vote for Bernie. I don’t think I can explain it well, but Pete is a much better “player”. He has a unique ability to “reformulate a problem”, instead of attacking it the traditional way. His three major themes: freedom, security, and democracy, is just one example of that. Bernie is OK and has good intentions, but he is no match for Pete in that regard. One problem with Bernie is that I still do not know what type of socialism he is for. If he is for social democracy of the European type, why does he call himself a socialist? Or maybe he isn’t for social democracy. For example, his Medicare-For-All calls for essential elimination of private health insurance, but most European countries with universal coverage still have private health insurance. And if he is for social democracy, why call yourself a socialist, if this puts you at a disadvantage in US? This is a big tactical mistake.

@@donovan4105 We're currently spending $3.5 trillion a year on healthcare. That money along with a top marginal rate of 52% on the first dollar over $10million is more than enough to cover it. A conservative think tank, Koch funded, showed we would save $2 trilllion over 10yrs. So yeah, he has said how he would pay for it, and there are even better estimates out there. Tuition free public colleges and universities will be paid for with a speculation tax on Wall Street trading. The rates according to Bernie's plan are 0.1% on stocks, and 0.5% on bonds. So no, his policy proposals aren't empty. In fact, his policies would give peace of mind to every American when it comes to health care, and education. On top of that, he is dedicated to getting money out if politics by overturning Citizens United, and implementing a constitutional amendment to ban the practice. Bernie is the best candidate for a prosperous and compassionate America, which is what we all deserve.

Apart from his intelligence, I think what is so refreshing about Mayor Pete is that he’s not just giving out rehearsed lines and talking points, he actually answers the questions being asked of him. There is also no other candidate or politician in either party that comes across with the same level of sincerity. He’s the anti-politician. Interestingly, Corey Booker has a similar if not more impressive resumé. From Stanford, Rhodes Scholar, played football, Mayor of Newark, etc. But for some reason he just doesn’t comes across as sincere as Mayor Pete. And that matters a lot.

Martin A. I agree that he’s lacking in the policy aspect and he needs to address that moving forward especially as he gains more traction. I’m eager to see more specific policy views. And with his background, I’m optomistic he can come up with sensible ones. But I think his ability to inspire and relate to people should not be minimized. Sad to say, elections are not just about substance and policy battles. You can argue the last elections proved that. My point in my comment is that Mayor Pete brings something to the table that is unseen in other candidates and politicians that frankly many Americans may be yearning for.

@@potatotomatoe Americans aren't seeking inspiration. They are seeking things a living wage, a place to live, or to finally be able to see a doctor. His "Medicare for all who want it" position is about as disingenuous as it gets. He's nothing but a neo-lib shill meant to siphon votes from Bernie in his state, nothing more.
@potatotomatoe

@@ihateshitlibs Before you hear what someone is saying, you would first want to listen. In politics, the messenger and how you deliver your message, are just as important as the message itself. If all people wanted are the things that you mentioned, then why did the people vote against those interests and elect Donald Trump? Granted he won through the Electoral College, it still means enough people in the right places still bought into the lies and none sense he was spewing. It would be great if everyone was just rational and elections boiled down to policies. But that's not reality. People have emotions. And whether people acknowledge it or not, those play into the decisions people make--in some more than in others. But giving you the benefit of the doubt that you're not a troll, you've obviously made up your mind so there's just no point in going on with this conversation.

I don't know. Rachel Maddow reeked of arrogance in this video. "I was the first ever out Rhodes Scholar". "Yeah, I wrote a book on that subject". She tooted her own horn quite a bit during this interview. Of all the adjectives you could have picked, humility is not right.

Obama was weak and ineffectual as president. Not a great communicator at all. He couldn't sell his policies to the center. His appeal on the champagne trail was largely media fueled that came crushing down as soon as he was sworn in.
