I love your bike reviews. It would be awesome if you did a video on favorite tire combos! I saw you running a dissector on the back of your switchblade and wondered how that compared to the aggressor and dhr ii? Also if you have road a dissector front and rear?

Great bike and great review thank you. I feel the same about my Revolver FS120 1 after cycling through an Izzo and Process 134 CR/DL and a few others There are a couple of truly one quiver bikes out there and this seems like a great option along with the Spur, The Following and Ripley as well.

Thanks for the reviews and livestreams! They helped me greatly in determining which bike I wanted. At first I was like “this guy seems a little bias towards the Ibis bikes” but after trying it for myself I feel the difference you talk about. It’s personal preference, but they’re absolutely two completely different bikes. Definitely staying tuned for future content 👍 I managed to attend two demos with Ibis and Rocky this weekend and ultimately fell in love with the Exie. It has similar traits to the Ripley where it’s really capable for its category. The element is a very light bike with a thinner frame. I definitely felt it throughout the ride. Very capable descender though. Ultimately decided Ibis because of the suspension, frame feel, and traction (thanks to those wide rims). Ibis also happens to put some awesome component configs on the bikes from the factory. Just can’t beat it. All three bikes are total rockets, but I’d recommend demos to anyone who can reach them. There’s no replacement for feel.

Cool review! What trail is that in the video? Glad you compared the Element to the 429, the RM Element was on my shortlist last year since I wanted a trail bike I can bikepack occasionally. I went with the 429 instead thinking it was a little more trail-bike-ish, but the Element has really changed.

Yeah, this new Element is nothing like the previous. Much more of a trail bike. The Trails are in St George Utah in an area called Green Valley. Zen Trail, Barrel Trail and Bear Claw Poppy.

Some things I like better about them but the ace fit my smaller frame a little better. the drift is a little shorter and I like that. Like the zipper better than the garbage ace velcro...... I can recommend the drift!!

As someone who owns a ripmo af and is thinking about the element due to not using all the travel in the bike 90% of the time as a 230 lb rider, do you think a short travel bike like this may be better suited for a older rider looking for lighter easier climbing bike? I mainly ride blue and single black trails in the Carolinas and do 2 hour rides. Love tech trails but not a big jumper, mainly ride for fitness and fun of the outdoors.

I notice the Ripley is the gold standard these bikes are compared to for overall riding. I also notice the Tallboy is also the gold standard when descending is discussed. My 2021 TB 4 comes in at 28.5 lbs with pedals and 30mm carbon wheels….sure I can shave some more off but a better option for most of us is to shave a few pound off ourselves. Great honest review. The RM seems like a great bike but it seems other past bikes reviewed bikes were more praised by you.

Yeah. The Ripley in my experience can’t be beat. It’s just so good. Geo is excellent. Such a good blend of zippy and quick but still long enough to feel stable and confident at speed… plan to talk more about this in the live stream Tuesday!!

Great question. I'm always a bit concerned people/viewers think I sell a bike because I'm not happy with it or didn't get a long with it... although that could be the case some times, most of the time it's just that I need to move onto something else for the purpose of riding more bikes and I can't have 6 or 7 bikes at my house all the time. I will be sure to talk about this in the live though. Great idea, thanks!

I purchased the Ripley after reading and watching tons of reviews. Jason's review is what made me settle on the Ripley V4. I have no intensions of trading that bike in. Having said that, I would love to try one of these. If the Carbon 50 was available with a threaded bottom bracket it would be hard not to pick one up: that's just a personal preference, not a comment about pros and cons. I suspect the L Element 1231 wheelbase and the 480 reach might be closer to the dialed ride and fit I would like.

I wouldn’t worry about the threaded bracket the tolerances that these are made with it shouldn’t be an issue. I say due to me being a machinist.

No need to limit your selection based on BB. Get a thread Wheels BB and you will never have an issue.

I do not like working on press fit BB's myself. Threaded BB's are a personal preference. I ended up going with the 2021 Stumpjumper (140/130). It suits me well. I'm loving it.

Honestly, after spending more time on the Element... it sort of feels like a shorter travel Ibis Ripmo or RM Instinct... feels like a long bike. If I were shopping for a 120mm bike today I would go with the Ibis Ripley.

I have a 2019 RM Instinct and love it. My partner has a 2021 RM Instinct and I feel like it got heavier and doesn't climb as well. Curious to hear you talk about how this Element differs from the feel of an Instinct. Obviously it's a lighter bike with less travel, but this thing still sounds pretty capable. Where/who would an Element vs an Instinct be suited to?

Yeah. I loved the older Instinct you have.... I had it when it first come out in like 2017 or so... with a fox 34. Was an awesome bike! I would say this element is even better with better geo

I rode it almost 2 years ago for a week.... sadly the footage had terrible audio so I never ended up publishing the content. In short, it's very very similar to the Ripley in my experience.

How does this bike compare to the Trance 29? Thinking about moving from the Trance 29 to a RM Instinct as I've been doing a bit more shuttling lately, but the Trance 29 has been good for my local trails that I rise the most. Also considering ordering an Element frameset.

Swapped the .2 volume spacer for the .4 and dropped the psi 15 lbs. 7 clicks from full fast on the dps

Hi do you notice a lot of pedal strikes on the element seems to have a lower bb height and a 47mm drop vs the ripley with less drop?

I didn't have a problem and this trails is particularly difficult with pedal strikes so I think it's good.

I was thinking the same thing. Although this is slightly slacker than spur, which is 66 deg HTA, but pretty similar since both have a longer wheelbase

I have a trail 429 and everyone I know has problems with the fox dropper post sticking. Mine within a few weeks of receiving the bike. It’s a known problem. Tri flow shouldn’t be needed every month. Pivot needs to get this resolved yesterday. Don’t want to send out the dropper on a brand new bike. You seen that yet Jason?

Weird, haven't had a single issue in a full season of riding with my 429+Fox Dropper and haven't done any maintenance on it yet. Usually the only issues I've had consistently with the Fox Transfer is in cold weather they stop working entirely (

@@jasonw3287 That seatpost should be covered under warranty, both Fox & Pivot have good reps for covering warranties. Often sticky dropper posts (new condition) is too much torque on the seatclamp. No spokes broke after ~400 miles in the Rockies, but from past experience on other bikes I true my own when I get a new bike or get a wheel back from the shop. Usually the DT Swiss rim+hubs are pretty bomber across brands, and I lack finesse on my landings :).

For rocky terrain I think you would be better off with the Ripley or Pivot Trail 429... the Element has a lower bottom bracket that would cause more pedal strikes in rocky terrain. Good luck!

Hi Jason im coming from a 160-150 orbea rallon, i ride from my xc friends long rides with techy climbs and descends to some gnarly enduro trails with rockgardens jumps and some drops like St George but also some long alpine descends -700m. Anyway i will like new bike more light, better in rolling trails (orbea its a bit slow on that terrain) but loose less possible in capabilityes on the descends. Rascal, sb 130 could fit but i think a bit heavier. Ripmo always there in between, but maybe Stumpy? 140-130 sounds maybe not enough, but its very light, and i think more plush on descends than the RM Element.. not many 140 rear machines that are efficient om climbs but feel like 150-155 on gnarly stuff. I would look at the Trail 429 w a 140mm fox 36 and see what you think. Or the RM Instinct.... builds up light weight and is a dream to ride!

@@mtbyumyum thanks for the suggestions but i will need more options: pivot its very very close but some big cons: superboost, no frame only, great DW platform but only 120 (even knowing works like bigger bike) RC in spain poor dealer and aftersale So is why thought stumpy, really dont know when usually 429, 130lr or stumpy will have the repleacement, maybe during summer...

@@gabrielmarias972 If you're worried about 120mm on the 429, look at the Pivot Switchblade too. Solid bike that I believe Jason owned at one point. Reviews great. I think the Stumpy is close to this RM Element, also has the horst link style suspension, and reviews well (lots of build options too). If the regular Stumpy isn't enough, check out the Stumpy Evo at 150/160, though you might be back where you started! There aren't many bad options, just what's available and supported in your area.

@@bdhpxd thanks a lot! For me the big difference its stumpy or enduro 429 probably i can have a bike around 28.5lbs, where evo, yeti 130, revel rascal i think will be a bike probably more than 30. So my doubt is if there is too many trails, drops... i cant do with the first kind of bikes that compensate the lightnes of the bike. Also i already have good carbon wheels and pivot no frame option. Lets see

In terms of pedalling efficiency, how does the Element compare to the Instinct? Having a hard time deciding between the two and have no way of demoing either where I live.

This is a great question and one I wish I could have made a video about in a head to head comparison.... both excellent trail bikes! For me, there are 2 questions you should ask yourself. First, what is your trail speed? Second, what is your terrain like? If you are consistently hitting down hill speeds over 18 mph then the Instinct is your weapon of choice. If you occasionally hit 18-20 mph down hill but your avg is well below 18 mph then the Element will be the more rewarding bike to ride. So the first question is SPEED. Second question is terrain. Speed isn't as big of a factor in really chunky hairy terrain. Most people (95%) don't ever ride terrain that the Element or other sub 130mm bikes cant handle. So the end result is being over bikes 95% of the time. This isn't the end of the world, the Instinct with fast rolling trail tires can still be a lot of fun down hill in sub 18 mph speeds on smoother buffed trails but.... the Element would be more rewarding and climb slightly better. But, BUT... if you ride chunky trails regularly or often enough during the season then you will be glad to be on the Instinct. @@mtbyumyum you should pin this comment to all of your reviews. It's amazing to me people choose 160 / 150 mm bikes when their local trails are 99% smooth, loose over hard surfaces with maybe a few 1-2 ft drops. If you live somewhere with near constant chunky terrain I totally get it. Most people would be way happier on short travel 29ers riding very smooth trails. Also some people may not be realistic about their speeds.

I just spent two days test riding the Alloy 10 here on the front range in Colorado. My local trails are rocky, loose, and fast. My own bike is 2018 RM Instinct, which I still love. Very impressed at what this bike could handle with a budget build. The RockShox Judy worked surprisingly well... I agree, the cornering on this bike was super impressive. I run way beefier tires on my Instinct and the WTB Ranger 2.3's hooked up nicely. I was kind of amazed how this model did. For under $3K, this model is a great option for someone getting into the sport or on a budget. And...Rm's alloy frames have come along way. It is a great looking bike. I'm like Jason, did not take me long to decide, yes, I want one.

Can’t decide between this and pivot trail 429. RM would be 1000€ cheaper and I would have a set of wheels ready as not superboost

Both use press fit bottom brackets. I’ve read about demo Elements with creaky BBs. A local bike shop employee told me that Pivot’s are much more trouble free than average because their tolerances are so much tighter than other manufacturers. He said Pivot tolerances are within 0.5% vs 5-7% for others. Maybe why Pivot cost a little more. I have many thousands of miles on my first Pivot, a 2015 Mach 4 C, and my frame has been the most bomber FS bike I’ve ever had. People complain about PF BBs but this Pivot continues to run silent.

Pivot Trail 429 Medium size *670mm standover* ( 26.375") Rocky Mtn Element Medium *808mm standover* ( 31.8" ) My height 5'8" *My inseam 29"* My knutts have clearance on the Pivot - Guess which one I'll order. In an age where *_5 years ago_* most FS bike manufacturers figured out how to get their standover height down well below 720mm, Rocky Mtn should be ashamed to market a knutt-cracker like the Element complete with a child-free-future standover height 😩 - At least it might save the price of a vasectomy.

NO FREAKING WAY. I really don't get it..... such a lame sport imho. I've been out maybe 5-6 times. Conditions have to be perfect for it to be any fun and even then, it's not that fun. I would rather ride a trainer or run on a treadmill....

@@mtbyumyum Fat bikes seem to be either you love it or hate it, Hahaaa! I live in central idaho and we have 6 month long winters here and miles and miles of groomed forest access roads in the winter. You can ride for days on end on isolated groomed forest roads up in the mountains. Think all day bike touring type rides in isolated wilderness. But I understand those type of rides are not for everyone. Hey I love riding in the summer to just as much.

Groomed might be the difference... almost every time i've been fat biking it was basically hiking around in the powder with a 35 pound bike....

You really need either grooming or consistent snowmobile traffic and probably longer winters too, but I love fatbiking in Montana. My fatbike is 26-27lbs pending tire setup btw, Fatboy SL ftw, sadly only made 1 year.

Rocky mountain actually makes concentric bottom brackets, they don't have issues with press fit BBs like some manufacturers

Absolutely loving these modern geometry Downcountry bikes. In the past, my biggest complaint about Trailbikes was that they were very heavy unless you bought the $10,000 build. The combination of the XC light Trailbike with Enduro-ish geometry is a total winner. I'm hoping for a 120/120 travel bike with 77* STA and 64* HTA that weighs near 25 pounds. Have you seen the (125/140 travel) Canyon Spectral 125 with the geo numbers above.

@@johnr5001 I agree that it is not light-weight but it is short travel and the geo is very progressive. I think that makes the Spectral 125 interesting. Build it up very light (maybe a light-weight 130 mm fork and some lighter faster rolling tires) and it could be pretty Downcountry.

It's a xc bike not a trail bike look at their website. They built it to race xc races like the Cape epic or b.c race type of races like them

Great bike , rides smooth kzfaq.infoUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L I added a bigger spring loaded seat to it . Takes a bit of adjusting cables to get brakes and shifting to perfect . I've owned quite a few bikes in the past that were absolutely uncomfortable to ride and they always ended up as garage wall decor . I'm not seeing that with this one. It's pretty light I've only ridden it a few miles but I like it . As for the pedals falling off in the other reviews , the pedal arms are aluminum along with the pedal studs look to be also . I would not overtighten them. I can see it would be very easy to overtighten them and strip the threads right off . All in all I think it's pretty good quality besides the aluminum pedal thing .

I just stumbled across this “review”. Seems a bit disingenuous to review a bike that you’ve heavily modified from stock. Wheels, hubs, tires, stem ,front fork have all been replaced on this bike. Who knows what else? Not really a review of the factory bike anymore, is it?
