Muesli is a type of cereal dish popular as a breakfast in some parts of the world. The basic version consists of uncooked oatmeal and fruit.
Dry muesli is a loose mixture mainly of oat flakes and pieces of various dried fruits, nuts and seeds. It usually also contains other cereal flakes, for example wheat or rye. Many people like to make their own. There are many types of muesli, for example with honey, various spices or chocolate. Dry muesli can be conveniently stored for many years. Its preparation is quick, just mix them with milk, yogurt or fruit juice and possibly pieces of fresh fruit.

Müesli was invented around 1900 by the Swiss doctor Maximilian Bircher-Benner for patients in his hospital, where a diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables was a key part of the treatment. He is said to have been modeled after a similarly "strange dish" served to him and his wife during a hike in the Swiss Alps. Bircher-Benner himself named the dish "d'Spys" (the Swiss form of the German "die Speise", or dish). The term Müesli is a diminutive of the Swiss noun "Mues" (German "Mus"), i.e. porridge. In its current form, muesli has been popular in the West since the 1960s as part of the growing interest in healthy and vegetarian diets.
