Ali could take a punch like no other fighter in history could, the shots he took in this fight, the left hook he got up from in the 1st. Frazier fight, laying on the ropes and letting Foreman pound on him all had to take a major effect on him later in life. It's a shame he didn't get out when he saw he was getting hit with shots he wouldn't have been hit with in his prime.

What few remember was, Earnie had been side stepped by Ali since 1976, he was at the top of his game, Ali had no business being in the ring with his old sparring partner, at that time late in his career. Only an Ali would have risked going 15 with Earnie by that time.

I watched this fight more than once: Ali Ring generalship- He danced, used the ropes and picked his moments to score. Shavers Pressed and stayed busy with power. I turned off the volume and watched. This is how I scored it. Ali (A) Shavers (S) S-A-A-S-A-S-A-S-(tie)-A-A-A-S-S-A Ali 8-6-1

That's just part of it . His last fight should have been George Foreman. When he fought Norton 3 which I scored 8-7 Norton. Notice the bad condition Ali was in at the end of the fight He looked sick and had to be helped to the locker room. It was so sad. I'm convinced his punchiness was germinating . It was moments Shavers should've just went in like ''Fuck it'' to take Ali out....But man oh man Ali's mind tricks and reputation of being hurt and coming back is insane. Shavers did exactly what Joe frazier did in Round 11 when Ali walked back extra wobbly. They're hesitent in just going in. Shavers knows Ali is a master manipulator at playing Posum. Shavers went in every figher when they were hurt, ALL OF'EM, even Larry. But Ali.....he knew that was just a different level he still had to be on his Ps & Qs with. absolute disappointment in this decision. if shavers was hurt one time ali was hurt at least five times. I get tired of ali's straight arm and head hooking tactics just to conserve his energy. He often resorts to pitty pat punches in the last 15 seconds trying to steal rounds... and I know the judges know better, it's all $$$. forget about impartial announcers Larry. where's Al Bernstein when you need him?? He fought way too long ... till Holmes when they just couldn't had to quit perpetuating the Ali myth. I guess that after being an avid boxing fan for over thirty years I've drifted to MMA territory. Should've been a second fight. Shavers had more big hits on Ali than most fighters. Ali saved himself with the ropes. One more round could have went either way.

Shavers coasted way too much through most of the fight, worried about getting tired, and knowing Ali took a great punch and might not get knocked out, so Shavers didn't pour it on until late in the fight, but too late, Ali had built up a big lead on points, by round 13 the only way Shavers could win was by KO, which he almost did, at the end of round 14 Ali was out on his feet, trainer Dundee even had to help him back to the corner, one more hard shot and Ali would've been gone, but Ali came on strong in the end, only the ropes kept Shavers from going down.

Only Ali could get away with rubbing Shavers head with his glove before the fight lol.. I remember watching this fight when I was a kid. Ali and Shavers liked each other there was no bitterness between the two. Earnie showed stamina that night that he normally lacked. He gave everything but just came up a few rounds short. He hurt Ali a few times and Ali later stated that was the hardest he had ever been hit. Earnie came close to winning the title a couple of years later when he knocked Larry Holmes down in the 7th round of there second fight. Larry got up and would eventually win the fight keeping Shavers from the title. RIP Earnie Shavers & Muhammad Ali.
