Fun fact: the reason why the actress is so wooden, boring and rarely emotes is because she has said that it helps make her more pretty. I am not joking. Also, I love how the directors said that they removed Mushu because they didn’t want any magic in the movie while giving us a witch and a phoenix.

Who would have thought taking out the songs, Mushu, Cri-Kee, and Mulan’s personality as well as any heart, depth, growth, or just all emotions in general would result in a bad movie? Simply shocking.

Aang showed more facial expressions during his scene dealing with Koh the Face Stealer than this Mulan actress did during this entire movie.

I hate movies with " strong female characters". I love movies with strong characters that happen to be women. Yes, there is a difference.

Animated Mulan : “Train hard and be awesome to earn respect of your fellow mates to save your country.” Live action Mulan : “Be born with superpowers and be an asshole to everybody.”

This Mulan review was unironically more entertaining than the movie itself. And the Eddie Murphy impressions were *on point.* 👌

Is a quote from the original Ballad of Mulan. It's her response to her fellow soldiers, when after 12 years of campaigning they finally find out she was a woman all this time. That's why that bit about the two rabbit at the start was added.

I think my sister put it best, “This Mulan’s only conflict, is she doesn’t have any problems!” This version is so wooden and has zero charisma!!! And personality is absent from this movie. The hero’s journey is about overcoming obstacles!! But she is perfect....

Writers: So what did you think of the movie? Me: Pack up. Go home. You're through.

I wouldn’t mind if this Mulan was a day dreamer instead of a clumsy girl. We would see these early perfect Mary Sue scenes as daydreaming before reality hits. Oh that would be hilarious.

The fact that he says “Mulan the bad one” and not refer to Mulan 2 is impressive

"Not as bad as other Disney remakes" This is hands down the worst one, imo. The acting, editing, pacing and CGI are awful. I can never lose myself because there's constantly something reminding me it's a movie, and a bad movie at that. At least Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast showed the actors had some talent, be it Jasmine's acting, Aladdin's dancing or Beast's singing. I see pretty much no talent on screen when I watch this. I can't even appreciate the martial arts because the editing is so jumpy.

The "dated, not progressive enough" Animated film: Mulan is an inspiring character who overcomes flaws thus teaching everyone watching regardless of gender, age, color, or creed that they are strong and can overcome their weaknesses. The "modern feminist" live action film: Mulan is a perfect flawless super-being who literally nobody could relate to or learn from. And in particular presents a highly toxic role model for young girls by telling them they have to be perfect and never feel any emotion.

Dear Disney, Just because you don’t want a strong female character to rely on a man for assistance doesn’t mean make her a Mary Sue. There’s actually nothing wrong with a female character taking what she learned from a man and making it her own (in fact I think it’s what made Mulan so beloved in the first place). And if you still wanted to take men out of the equation entirely, have them be taught by a woman. You can take men out of the equation while not making her a Mary Sue, kill two birds with one stone. This Mulan was so unfaithful to the original that they should've just called it MooLAN and made it about cows running tech support.

I've said this in other Live Action Mulan Reviews, and I'll say it here again: The biggest problem I had with this movie, is that it completely ruins the feminist and empowering message of the original, with a garbage message. In the original movie, Mulan was weak, she was clumsy, she was incompetent, she was afraid, lost, and confused. But so were all the other recruits, showing that men and women are equals, they share the same strengths and the same weaknesses. And it was only through determination, hard work, and effort, that both she and the other cadets, went from complete failures to skilled warriors in their own right. The message for any little girl watching it being a clear "See girls? if you set your mind to it, you can accomplish anything that the boys can do too" In the remake however, Mulan is a fucking superhero from childhood, able to bend the laws of physics to her will, and capable of superhuman feats nobody else can make. She doesn't earn any of her skill, she's just born with it. Which turns the message instead into "See little girls? if you are born with superpowers, you can accomplish anything! And if you don't? well, off to the kitchen with you, where you belong". And this is reinforced with the introduction of the completely pointless character of Mulan's Sister. She doesn't have any powers, so what's her role in the story? Be a glorified baby-making machine and conform to the gender norms. You're either born a superhero, or you're just a kitchen accessory. THAT is the message of this movie. This is a very misogynistic movie that has the balls to try to pretend its feminist.

"I know there were problems with these women (the original princess lineup) but I could tell them apart!" Nostalgia Critic doesn't always get it right, but this line is gold. Screw anyone who thinks these remakes are empowering. You're only keeping people down further.

Mulan was so overpowered, I expected Nick Fury to show up in credits, asking her to join the Avengers.

Disney: Let's take out Mushu to make a more realistic film. Also Disney: Shape shifting Sorceress.

"I dont like sand. Its coarse and rough and gets everywhere." This quote is a masterpiece compared to the dialogue Mulan says in this movie.

I love one more thing in the animation that's missing here. So, Mulan wins Li Shang's arrow challenge not because she's miraculously head and shoulders above all men and can climb the post with weights on her wrists when no one else can, but because she found out how to turn the obstacle into her asset. And then she does exactly the same in the avalanche scene. And when she loses her sword, in the fan scene. It's logical and it's built up to, it feels earned and doesn't feel like a fluke, because she'd always had to learn how to compensate for her weaknesses and work with what she's got. Because, being a woman raised in the society when she couldn't do sports and in a wealthy enough family that she didn't have to do a lot of hard physical work, when she has to compete against men who are encouraged to be fit, she is naturally the last in everything in the beginning, as you'd expect - not magically stronger than all of them. And while women tend to be more agile and coordinated, we are shown that Mulan was clumsy, so she didn't even have this advantage. So it feels realistic that she was behind everyone else. And you can see how overcoming this helps her think fast in such situations rather than panicking when she loses her strength which she never had to begin with.

My sis after watching the movie: "Ugh, Mulan is so unrelatable now because she's a superhero." Me: "Nawh, even superheroes have weaknesses...and feelings." Mulan 2020 is straight Mary Sue

Ironic how Disney pretentiously keeps on trying to depict their female leads as strong women who oppose social conformity but in the process, they're making their characters way too restricted to be only playing the flawless type that barely even acts like a human.

30:16-30:50--THANK YOU! This sums up the problems with how modern Disney female characters are written. Disney is so afraid of playing into old stereotypes they've gone to the complete opposite extreme instead of just creating strong leading ladies. Esmeralda, for instance, is a great example of a strong character who happens to be a woman without winking her personality or femininity at the audience every five minutes. Get back to gals like her, Disney, for the love of the gods!

What's really disappointing is that Ming Na Wen proved that she can can indeed be a badass in Agents of Shield. So why the hell didn't they cast her. I've seen her project more emotion while playing a literal robot.

After watching this just after the review of the Mulan II straight to video movie, I find it hilarious that it was said in that review that the live-action remake couldn't be worse

Here’s a theory: Disney is intentionally making live action remakes so bad that they can re-re-release the animated versions and make even more money

The thing is that if the Chinese wanted to watch a Mulan movie they’d simply watch a homegrown film instead. So this soulless exercise in greed was futile in the end.

Ming-Na Wen’s cameo in this movie felt closer to a live action Mulan compared to the actual Mulan in the remake.

You know, gotta say, the "Burned Village" scene is a PERFECT representation of how this film treads over its own humble legacy with nary an iota of respect. Also, for the dubbing part, I'd have just went, "You know what, if we're gonna dub over all the lines, at least replace 'em with FART sounds! It'd be out of place and silly, but it'd inject more personality in to the performances!"

The whole point of Mulan is the fact that for a sizable time she was treated to be the equal of any man and used those opportunities to create real change. To literally give Mulan more power over others is too complete miss any potential gender message they were trying to have.

"chi" isn't even supposed to work like that. Chi is supposed to be your stamina and will power. Having "good chi" wouldn't mean you have a lot of talents and you're awesome at everything, it just means you have a lot of energy.

In the original legend, Mulan had a younger brother who was still a child when she left her home. I just wished they would have brought that part instead of forcing in sister who's about almost the same age.

The whole chi concept was my biggest gripe with this movie. Instead of her realistically closing the gap with other soilders despite being a woman, it seems like she's only good because she has superpowers which not only undermines her accomplishments but makes her seem like an exception instead of normal.

Anyone want to mention that they made Mulan, one if the most badass women in film, a Mary Sue? No, I'm not talking like "Ooh, she's good in one thing. She's a perfect hero despite all her failings"; No, I'm talking 100% Fanfiction-grade Mary Sue. - She's an acolyte in the martial arts since childhood. - Everyone admires her, even the villain, despite her being duller than dirt-filled dishwater - Has no emotional scars, mental hangups, or physical weaknesses that she has to overcome or compensate. - Is in a story where the world has to bend to her as a moral pillar. - Hackneyed antagonistic forces that turn on a dime to go against her to have her prove then wrong later. MA-RY SUE! The only thing missing us her being made to look like the... wait, give me a second. *a vigorous Googling later* OK, so she wasn't given makeup to look like the director or any of the writers, but she checks nearly all of the boxes. Which sucks, because the original was an amazing character. She was strong in spirit, but had to work to make her physical strength meet it; he was risking her life to save her injured father from a war she knew he'd die in; She earned the respect of people that would've played her off as a "Crazy dame" in any situation where she didn't lie. She nearly died many times, and had to use her creative thinking to overcome several challenges. This one don't do Jack. By the way, friendly reminder that this was filmed near a Uygher concentration camp.

What makes the revealing scene even worse, is that the movie actually stated that lying and deceit would result in expulsion and not death. Meaning, that in terms of tension building, she was never in danger with her reveal.
