In this Skill Builder, we'll be showing you how to make unique details in a section of a model. We'll use Outliner to make the process even easier so we can work with multiple sections.

That's brilliant Aaron, it's going to be so useful for me when I create detailed woodworking plans as this will allow me to show better highlights of the more complicated parts of the project.

Thanks for the more in-depth abilities of Sketchup

I've never needed to use the outliner, but honestly, this is gold for sections, particularly the search of sections feature. Thank you!! I have used tags for this, but for sections, I think I'll use the outliner from now on. Perhaps this will be my journey entry into using the outliner more. Thanks Aaron :)

The outliner is such a powerful tool, You said you have been using tags but isn't that just what the outliner does but with extra work? I know tags can be handy while working with separate groups7comps but I have found the outliner to be really useful if you work with a lot of hidden geometry.

@@hiljainentaivas7216 The way you access things without the outliner is to just click into them. I know you know that. What I'm saying is that the amount of work to name everything to than find it vs literally just clicking into an object is just not worth it in my opinion. It's a time loss and more things to be aware of in my opinion..What a hastle to name everything and for what if not quantifying? Just way more of a headache. Just look at what you want to click on in the model and click on it, no need for over organizing everything with it's own name... Perhaps there are simplified use cases with the outliner that could make it more useful, however I don't think Justin showcases that very well in this video and the real use case of it vs. simply clicking on objects to edit. I'd like to see a more in depth comparison personally...

Outliner is my new friend!

Love the application, but it also reminds me of the limitations of section cut fills. Would really love if Sketchup would bring the ability to texture section cuts by object or tag with any texture into the standard software package.

Nice "House Chunk", Aaron...

Thanks for explaining- good to be able to do this. However I can see it gettign super messy where lots of sections are required in one model to extract the details out. It would be awesome if trimble just set up a tool with a view box (like revit) that just enabled a volume to be determined to cut the view, so that we didnt have to mess around with so many sections!
@brunobordini76962 жыл бұрын
Sketchup needs to update this! Otherwise this will become a mess if you have a lot of sections!

Hi Aaron, I’ve been watching several of you videos the past few days and finding them really helpful. Thanks. Just a question on this one - you kept referring to ‘Outliner’ but I noticed you were working in Tabs the whole time. Do I understand correctly that tabs is the new outliner in SU 2021? Think I saw that somewhere. I don’t have tabs in my version so wondering if still possible to use multiple sections in an older version of SU?

Great video thanks. One question regarding scale. I have a model that is scaled 1:160 and I would like to scale it to 1:1 for a VR walkthrough inspection of the model. I can do the VR piece but need some advise on scaling this model up. Your thoughts? Thanks.
@SketchUp2 жыл бұрын
Select the whole model and use the Scale Tool to scale by 160.

You’re giving me a better understanding of the mysterious Outliner……Can you not drag and drop an item from one group to another in Outliner?
@chrissullivan87552 жыл бұрын
Yes. Clicking and dragging, to me, is easier than cut and paste in place.

I just viewed this video and, like everyone, I found it fascinating and potentially very useful to get just the right drawing image to explain what is going on with a "project." However, I cannot get the "Drag-n-drop" method to work. When I try to drag a section, I either get into the :rename" process or the " activate" process. The overall process seems to work fine if I enter into the "sub-group" and create the new section, but I cannot take an existing section and move it to the nested group. SU Pro 2021 latest revision, Windows version. Secret handshake?
@SketchUp2 жыл бұрын
Are you in the Move command when you click on the section?
@KentNelson2 жыл бұрын
@@SketchUp I'm sorry but I am confused. I wasn't specifically "in the Move command" though I did try that after your reply. I was trying to drag a "Section 1" from one group into another group that was nested below it. And I was "dragging" it. But, alas, to no avail.

Yes Aaron, not that’s something that will come in handy.

It does not work. In the outliner window, it won't let me drag the sections. And even if I copy and paste in place nothing changes.

Too fast for me. i need to practise on Outliner, Layering with all the commands and icons.
