I would recommend you try the roxon phantom. Simply because of the interchangeable blade feature it has. Another multi tool brand I like also is ruike. The ruike LD-51B one handed blade multi tool is fantastic. It is like the Victorinox work champ, but the blade has a thumb stud for one handed opening.

Pocket knives were not called multitools until recently. In fact the pliers based multitool existed long before Leatherman. And electric tools designed for various different adapters were called multitools. Leatherman did popularize the multitool as pliers based. But no one in my first 55+ years collecting Victorinox Knives called them multitools. Terminology keeps changing on us old timers! Pocket knives--and multitools. Actually big difference. I have about 70 Swiss Army pocket Knives, and 50 name brand multitools. Pliers based -- knife based. The Victorinox pliers are not analogous to larger pliers. The are like super fingertips. All the Wenger line is now 100% Victorinox Delamont line (BTW: Wenger is VENG‐uh.). Historically. Recently. Cheers from Haifa.

This is all great info! What was the first pliers based multitool you owned? Was it trade specific? How did you classify your Victorinox knives before? Just "knife"? I have only been collecting for 15 years or so and my first multitool was a Gerber (still own it but was missing from this video). Before that I only knew of leatherman being the first plier based butterfly opening multitool that popularized the definition of a "multitool" as I know it today. I wonder what they will be called when I have collected for 55+ years lol Thank you so much for your comment!!

@@Jfree441 I had the earliest modern Swiss Tool. 24 years, and still great. My early Leatherman are less sturdy, floppy, but functional. In Israel we just call the Victorinox pocketknife an "olar schvietzerit," or Swiss folding knife. But now years of 111mm and 130mm Victorinox locking blades complicates things! And many call any jackknife or clasp knife or pocket knife a Swiss knife. Most popular pocket knife in Israel. Kli Rav Taklitit or multifunctional tool is the pliers based idea. Always pliers with other tools. Swiss Army knife is a knife with other tools. At Blade Forum look up "Before there was Leatherman" thread. Tim Leatherman created the popular multitool industry, and deserves credit for much experimentation and eventual business model success, for the pliers-based multitool. Just not the first by a long shot. Not that this takes away from his own innovation and continuing improvements.

I watched your video from beginning to end. You have so much insight about multitools. I love your approach and how you explain the pros and cons of each multitool. And I can tell that you use your tools unlike me) :P It's interesting because your dillema was the same dillema I faced. The key difference being that I'm not a handyman, electrician, plumber, mechanic, etc. I'm just a regular person who works in corp who handles projects at home. For my use-case I found that my rationale was that Leatherman pliers weren't as good as a Knipex XS. And that Leatherman scissors weren't as good as Victorinox scissors (aside maybe from the Micra) but the Micra has drawbacks. So I basically opted for just a Knipex XS+Rambler. Basically imho the functionality of Leatherman at 1/5 the weight. ie better pliers than a Leatherman, better scissors than a Leatherman and all the same 'side-tools'. But you got me thinking about the Leatherman Sideclip. I know the Bond is supposed to be the remake of the Sideclip but is the old Sideclip much better than the Bond?

I am not a huge fan of the quality of Leatherman's new "budget" tools like the bond. The reason I love the sideclip is the mix of classic Leatherman quality with all the pocketability of the newer slimmer tools. I like the bond platform but the quality has a way to go yet.

@@Jfree441 Ah interesting. So the toolset and form factor is good but the materials aren't good. Interesting. Good to know. Thank you!

I love the Swisstool X (big one), sturdy af, unmatched quality, smart design. Since they came out with the clip this thing wont leave my side, its become part of my body now:P Edit: now that i see you got the black one, i also got that but asked victorinox service if they could exchange the serrated blade with scissors and the plierhead for one without capcrimper, they said yes, so i got basically a custom made black swisstool X, cant buy that (maybe the new oho versions) and get the clip, its very good:) and the plastic holder, so so good. they mailed it

Having a factory clip was not an option when I picked mine up...I wish it was because that would have been a game changer. I never even thought about just asking them to switch out the serrated blade, that is genius!! The coating has held up rather well even with some pretty rough use, I am pretty impressed. most other coatings rub off like a paint but Victorinox knows how to do it very well. There is no better feeling than a trusty companion by your side like this for years and years and I hope it brings you both joy and utility that you will share with others!

@@Jfree441 yea that clip is a recent addition, can be bought seperately. Glad to hear the coating is holding up, i often use my silver Swisstool x because I want to spear the black one. Thank you for the kind words, I wish you happyness.

I wish you would have touched on the Ruike LD series as an alternative to the SAK (Victorinox) style multitool and the Toler Union just for it's uniqueness. I bought mine for the sole purpose of changing tires on my Bajaboard and it does that flawlessly. I have the Leatherman surge but it's a bit too heavy for EDC and it's tool selection could be better. However I've always been impressed with the SOG Powerpint as a pocket EDC. It has an amazing selection of tools and it's size, price and quality it's pretty good.

Ruike is actually a new brand to me as of this year. I was thinking about picking a few of their knives and tools up. If I do, I'll definitely do a comparison video with them!

The perfect multitool does exist. Its called Victorinox Spirit X 😉

The perfect multitool is The Victorinox SWISSTOOL X PLUS (with ratchet) P.N. 3.0339.L add some special bits you require in the empty slots, add a 4" adjustable wrench in the leather pouch and you get a complete toolbox to repair vehicles and whatever technical stuffs. If you need a multitasking Knife for the outdoor, wood, food preparation... instead choose the Victorinox OUTRIDER, add some quick deploy paracord, a space blanket and a BIC lighter and your main survival/emergency needs in the bush are solved in your pocket.
