What size is your MSR stowaway pot? I’ve heard people say they fry on the base of the pot but I think they had the 1.6 liter (largest) size, others have used wire to mod a handle to go through the handle of the lid to use the lid as a fry pan on the fire but it doesn’t sit properly on flat alcohol or gas burners properly

Mine is the 1.1L version but I should have gotten the 1.6. The 1.1L is much smaller than I thought. I have not fried in the lid before, I have a titanium plate I use as a skillet but I could imagine it would work well enough.

These definitely seem to be a hit or miss. I have heavily used a Leatherman Juice and would still prefer if they were readily available however, I have YET to break the SOG and I bent and broke the Juice. I still think this is the next best thing to the Leatherman Juice after this much use, I am still confident with that. If leatherman could bring out a mini multi-tool on the Free platform, I would be in heaven. Knowing Leatherman Juice is a no go and even second-hand are ridiculously expensive, what would be your goto plier based pocket tool?

I like the overall implementation of your kit. I have the Steelman. I may have to replace the extension on it like you did. That is the one weak point in it's design. I need to pickup the Knipex. I fly with my Leatherman Style PS that is blade-free but has pliers & scissors. A Victorinox Jetsetter is also blade-free and has scissors.

Almost all of multi tool reviewers somehow forget to take the steel composition into account. PowerPint steel is 5cr. Very soft steel. Also it has a huge gap on pliers.
@Jfree441
@Jfree441 8 ай бұрын
It's not that it's not taken into account, it's just that multi-tools across the board have inferior steel to pocket knives. Leatherman is really the only one making multiools with superior steels and it's only in the knife blade. The majority of multi-tools have very soft tool steel. This is not meant to take the place of a pocket knife, but it in my use is better than the steel on victorinox and those are to some the king of pocket tools. It's just not worth bringing up until the gap in performance is detectable more regularly.
@4Sandrix
@4Sandrix 8 ай бұрын
@@Jfree441 leatherman does not use 3rc and 5cr steel or equivalents for their pliers, but SOG does, also besides the blade the cutters, file and some pressure fit elements on leatherman are made out of much more durable compounds(in general) compared to SOG and other budget options. Which is why they last longer. Hell even screws are higher in quality)) There’s another high-end Italian multi tool brand called Beta you might have heard about it. Similar quality to Leatherman. Anyway my point was: I love powerpint, but I also know that I’ll have to buy it every 4 to 6 months again and again so in longterm it is not that great of a deal.
@Jfree441
@Jfree441 8 ай бұрын
@@4Sandrix That is a fair assessment. I have used leatherman for many years and have had 2 break on me doing seemingly normal tasks. Leathermen wave pivot screw broke clean off. Leatherman Juice S2 screwdriver twisted like a corkscrew under reasonable tension. SOG has yet to fail me but time will tell. I don't only take into account the brand, and materials when I review. I use the stuff and give real world examples because I love it. Maybe in a year or two, I will share the hatred for this steel but in my use as a tinkerer and relative handy guy, it has not yet failed me like I have seen in leatherman. If I had to choose just one, without a doubt I would choose leatherman, but I do find joy in some of these more obscure tools surprising me in how good they are.

It's 3 months later and I'm back here. I literally just rebought this. I'm wondering whether it's possible to remove some of the side tools out of this thing without compromising anything. But I'm totally in agreement with you. There's just nothing in the mid-size size range. It's this or the Juice S2. Problem with the Juice S2 is that they're charging up the wall. Also the S2 basically can't be modified with new tools since it's held together by rivets. I'm thinking of just getting this and solely for its pliers and in a pinch it's subpar tools. As they say - the best tool is the one you have on you. Is it easy to remove the tools you don't want? I think I'd remove redundancies from my Victorinox Rambler. ie the scissors, the tiny screwdriver, the tiny microscrewdriver that is SUPER SUPER dangerous holy shit.
@steved9060

I like the Powerpint mainly for the 1/4" bit holder and excellent pliers for the size. It's easy to remove side tools with 2 T8 torx bits. The tricky part is getting it all back together. The tools are separated by thin nylon washers and everything needs to be carefully aligned onto the threaded tube part of the screw before the shorter male screw is refixed. The tightness of the screws will need adjusting to get back to the ease of opening you prefer. The thickness of the tools at the pivot is around 1.4mm, so you need to use 3.5mm id X 7mm od washers to make up the gap. Interested to hear how you get on.

@@steved9060 Oh yeah about a few days after I got it, I figured it out. It was a Bee trying to get it together. The most difficult part is that the locking mechanism the black part easily comes out. So I had to use really tiny hemostatic pliers to put them together. I managed to make it work. Instead of washers (since I didn't think about that), I used zip ties, cut the ends and it worked haha. Essentially I kept all the best tools and removed the crap ones on the sides.

LOVE my PowerPint! Partner it with a Leatherman ratcheting extender and you can get 6" reach easy. Plus, I found it can be awkward adjusting your hand around the tool while screwing in or out, or obnoxious to have to take the bit out of the screw just to reset each turn revolution. I usually carry both in my fifth pocket with a #2 phillips preatty easy. Edit: Just realized I'm seeing all the usual "hate this tool" comments I tend to see for the Pint. I will say, I have larger and beefier tools for really putting in some work or while outdoors. But as an urban/Dad EDC tool, it blows other tools of its size out of the water. Not to say other small tools aren't good, but for me at least, the solid pliers and an ACTUAL driver option makes it way more useful than others. It's like any other EDC item. Just 'cuz it doesn't fit your loadout, doesn't mean its crap.
