@@jacobbondy1767 Friend that lived behind my house had several different 429's over the years. He had just picked up several 69 Thunderbirds and robbed them. Nobody back then noticed, well because they were Thunderbirds. Anyways he tried to put one in his 60 Starliner that had the 330hp 390. He tinkered around with it and the C6 for some time and gave up. He was going to have to cut the firewall of the Starliner to get the 429 backed up enough to operate a fan. This was in 1980 so electric water pumps were costly at best. But that's one way to imagine the pure size of that beast.

I love this body style too. I actually like the Cyclone even better but these are one of the meanest looking muscle cars ever built. The 68-69 fastback is a beautiful body style too but I prefer the 70-71 Torino/Cyclone...particularly with the 429SCJ-4 speed-3.91 rear axle setup. The 4.30 rear is awesome for drag racing but not very street friendly

I owned a 70 429 Cobra Jet from 88-97 I absolutely loved it. Would take just about anything on the street at the time. Loved it when the new Corvettes would roll up next to me at the stop lights.

I can't imagine! That must have been awful for you! They can do SO much damage, either directly or indirectly, when that happens. Not to mention, injure the passengers and driver inside!! We hit a deer, years ago, in the middle of the night - really around 11:30pm or so, but it really doesn't get any darker than that, no matter what time it is, out in rural Virginia when the highway you're driving on has absolutely no lights on it, is run through an uninhabited portion of the countryside on Route 17, and looks exactly like a hallway with 60-80 foot pine trees down both sides! Fortunately we were NOT driving MY 1971 Ford Torino GT SportsRoof with the 351C-4V, C6 Console Shift, 70 series tires on the front, 60's on the rear, High Back bucket seats, HideAway Headlights, in beautiful solid dark burgundy without the laser stripe. I didn't really care for many of the stripe/paint color combinations they offered for the time, but since we bought the car used, it was not really an issue - jyst luck of the draw. Only a very few really looked like a good combination, the others were anywhere from "meh"😧 to 😨! 😂 Anyway, we were in the "family grocery getter" - a 1981 Ford Escort Station Wagon! (Bought used, but extremely low miles, and excellent condition for its age. I think it was about 1985, and the kids needed a little more room in the back, as they were doing what most all kids do - growing up! And after driving a car with an all black vinyl interior, and withOUT A/C for about 8 years, it was time to be able to cool off a little during the Midwest's sultry, hot 🌞🌡🌩🌪 "90/90" summertimes!

Fords in general have never gotten much attention, it’s always been a Chevy and Mopar world. Ford didn’t seem to mind that because they sure didn’t do anything to attempt to change it.

Definitely one of my favorite Ford's. Probably my favorite mid size Ford other than a 66-67 Fairlane 427. I actually prefer the 70 Cyclone Spoiler over the Torino Cobra. Love the Cyclone's gun sight grille. I like the 69 Fairlane Cobra/Cyclone CJ too but I prefer the 70-71 Torino Cobra and 70 Cyclone Spoiler. I would've ordered the Drag Pack option with the 3.91 rear axle because 4.30 gears were just too short to drive on the highway

I had a 71 Grabber blue Torino Gt with a 302 3 speed Cruies o matic that was the nicest car I owned up to that time. Had the chrome reverse wheels with Bonnieville white letter tires. Wish I still had that car. Lots of good times were had with my Torino. Great car.

i had the 4 speed in my 429 scj torino cobra, and never lost to an automatic.

1969 429 & 460 had 11.3 to 1 compression ratio and ran best on Sunoco 260 like most hot cars .

88rock X ; I bought the ERTL torino cobra and when I opened the hood, I got pissed. The engine looked like a 260ci or someone forgot to put the cylinder heads on the short block. Either way, I boxed it back up, took it to Toys R Us and got a refund. ERTL did the same thing to the Boss302. ERTL hit it out of the park with the 1960 Starliner though. White with blue interior. 5 spoke mags. 352, 2x4's with spark plug wires to boot.

Jerry Robinson How could you get that kind of speed out of it when the SCJ 429 was required to have either the 3.9 or 4.3 rear axle ratio?

@@gregorytimmons4777Gregory all I know is that It was an Airplane without wings. I was a crew chief on fighter jets during my stent in the Air Force. I bought It with 50,000 miles on the speed odometer. Someone may have beefed It up somewhat before I bought It. All I remember that day was telephone poles looking like a picket fence going by. The Highway Patrolman that did the clocking isn't around any longer to verify. Sorry!! No one in 4 counties around me could outrun It. Including Chrysler and General motors products. My wife was driving it when a local Ford pickup owner broadsided It when she was making a left hand turn. He was coming in from a curve and didn't see her in time.

Jerry Robinson The reason I asked is because the SCJ package required a low geared rear end more suited for quick acceleration for drag racing and those limit your top speed because the engine redlines first. I'd guess at around 110mph.

But I cannot count the times I buried It past the 120 mph speed odometer and after slowly letting off It took a few seconds before the speed odometer needle showed back up. I am really not contesting you because you obviously know quite a bit about this engine. My brothers were always asking me to give their friends a thrill ride and I did. Their assholes were so tight you couldn't have poked a needle into their asses without bending It. Lol. My brother would push against the floorboard with his feet and grip the seat with his ass.

The same way I didnt see the cop car I rearended in a rainstorm, on a blind right hand curve on a slick 4 lane city street, at dusk, while he was sitting in the left (middle) traffic lane, withOUT a turn signal, waiting to make a left hand turn! Under those particular circumstances, I didnt even get a ticket, although I still got charged with "failure to maintain proper lookout" or some such nonsense (apparently my xray vision that lets me see around blind corners wasn't functioning that day.) I was only 16 at the time, AND it was New Year's Eve. Not only that, but I missed the "Point System" on drivers licenses by 6 hours! I did have to go to "Defensive Driving School" because apparently the judge wasn't going to let me just walk away, I passed with a 98, and my "failure to maintain proper lookout" (bogus charge, but you know how traffic court can trump up the silliest nonsense - especially since the COP wasn't using HIS turn signal at the time)....was dismissed, and never showed up on my driving record. I have a 70 SCJ with a console shift C6. I have a stage 3 shift kit, a slightly higher stall converter and traction bars. It launched hard with modern tires but back in the day those old polyglas tires sucked... Lol

Yes they were and NASCAR used them in 1970 and 1971 and not the 70 or 71 models .Many went with the 427 T.P. and not the Boss 429 ,Too. in those years .,

@@edge2sword186 ; Wendell Scot used the 1970 Torino. Most NASCAR tracks were short track where aerodynamics wasn't a factor. AND, if you say that all Ford teams used the 68-69 fastback, especially the Talladega, then Ford should've mopped up the field like they did in 1969. Don't know if the 69 Charger Daytona was used in 1970? Many went back to the 427 because Ford pulled the plug on it's "Total Performance".

The 428 CJ/SCJ or 429 CJ/SCJ was probably the best BBF engine for street use. The FE 427 and BOSS 429 were racing homologation specials de-tuned for the street. The HiPo 390 was also a pretty good BBF engine...especially the 390 Police Interceptor

Bill owned Ireland Auto Electric in North Portland, Oregon and straightened out an electrical issue in the ignition system on my 67 Vette 427. As a factory Ford racer he also raced the famed 64 Fairlane Thunderbolt back in the day. RIP Bill. You are missed.

@@darrellsomers5427 .....and against a 396 Nova? What about any GTO or a 327/power glide Chevy II? Toast that's what. It may have done mid 13s in the quarter. Street races are usually less than a thousand feet. On the street, it was a DOG!

I love the Aussie Falcons and noted the roof line looked similar. It is too bad the big blocks did not make the trip across the pond along with the basic body.The Falcons are my favorite "classic" muscle car.

A stock 429 SCJ would smoke a stock BOSS 429. The BOSS 429 came with a way too tiny 735 cfm carburetor, a very restrictive exhaust system, and way too mild of a camshaft. Lose the smog equipment and open up the exhaust, bolt on an 800-850 cfm Holley, headers, a 1970 429 SCJ camshaft, and adjust the timing a bit and the BOSS9 was an absolute MONSTER of an engine. It was so detuned by Ford from the factory that it barely resembled it's racing bretheren

I had to watch a split window 327 corvette rot in a yard. Owners son died and left it where his son parked it. Wouldn't even talk about it.

@@dannyfields2065 - My husband and I, fresh out of the Air Force, were making our way from his last duty station at Langley AFB, and my hometown, in Hampton, Virginia to his home area in northwestern Indiana/northeastern Illinois in late August 1977. We were traveling west on I70, after having stopped overnight in Pennsylvania, and were approaching the interstate exit in Ohio for the Air Force Museum at Dayton/Fairborn, and decided to make a mid-day stop to visit there, and get some lunch, since we certainly weren't sure when we would get back that way. The museum was certainly a microcosm of what it was destined to become, and is today, but we enjoyed what was there a great deal, including the SR-71 Blackbird they had on display, and the space exploration materials and equipment they had. NASA has a facility at Langley, and had trained some of the previous astronauts there for moon landings, when I was still in school, so it was of personal interest as well. We still have photos of the two of us at various displays, looking a little "worse for wear" from our trip, being a bit ragged from traveling from the hot and humid southeast to the hot and humid Midwest in late August in a 1969 Ford Galaxie 500 - maroon with black interior - without air conditioning! (I wouldn't get my '71 Torino GT SportsRoof with 351C-4V C6 Auto Console shift, HideAway Headlights, and highback bucket seats, also the same maroon paint (no stripe or louvers) and black interior, until the following February, since it was my 21st birthday present from my husband.) We arrived on September 1, 1977, and within a week I had my first case of bronchitis, with a sinus infection to boot. Should have taken that as a warning of what was to come, but being an adventurous 20-year-old, I toughed it out, including my almost immediate introduction to Midwestern winters, with the infamous "Blizzard of 78!" Living less than 20 minutes from I65, and under 2 hours south of Chicago, we were snowed in from all forms of civilization, except what we lived next door to, and walking distance from, in up to 4-1/2' of snow for almost 10 days. After 42 years, I'm still "toughing it out." Definitely NOT my chosen climate!

I have a 68, 69,70,& 71. I owned 2 70 Chevelles, can't see the similarity. The rear deck from the 68, 69's don't even come close to the 70, 71's either.Maybe the windshield though.....Oh well.

I think you got the wrong engine family. 429 - 460 is the 385 engine family. Never heard Cleveland or Windsor associated with them.

Correct. Nothing to do with Cleveland or Windsor. "Cleveland" was a more performance oriented 351 c.i. v8 manufactured at the Cleveland Ohio engine casting plant. Ford also made a "Windsor" 351 v8, but different, and made at the Windsor Ontario plant.
