Yarsagumba, also known as the 'Himalayan gold' is a rare mushroom that is picked in the remotest corners of the Nepal Himalayas. The prices can reach up to $30.000 per kilogram (2.2 lb). A decade ago Nepal was struck by the yarsagumba trading craze, as the prices of the mushrooms soared in the international markets. Since then the local population has become increasingly dependent on this precious resource. 'The Mushroom at the Top of the World' follows a story of a village in Nepal's Rukum district, where in the aftermath of the People's War, the villagers have turned to mushroom picking in order to restructure their livelihoods. The documentary film addresses the issues of the precarious world of rural Nepal and portrays the people and their resilience in daily struggles to make a living in the relentless mountainous landscape.

The rare caterpillar fungus - also known as yarsagumba in the Himalayas - has been described as the world's most expensive parasite, selling for up to 400,000 Yuan ($83,800) per kilogram, according to Chinese state media. That's around $80 a gram, more than the current stock price of $59.40 for a gram of gold

Grazie agli organizzatori di questo documentario. Molto interessante e molto doloroso.

Love these people. I agree in diversifying the way they get their income but if the numbers of this product is decreasing then the sale price has to go up. If most of the product is going to China then double the price. It’s economics. The rarer the item, the more that has to be paid. In Australia during the gold rush,it was the people who sold goods to the miners that became the richest people. Some of these people could look for the fungus whilst others in the family could be suppliers of goods to others. That’s diversifying. 👍🏻😁🇦🇺

Thanks to the organizers of this documentary. Very interesting and very painful. Therefore, the Yarsagumba mushroom in Nepal, authentic gold for the inhabitants of these districts, is similar to the horn of the rhinoceros and other animals considered thaumaturgical by populations generally Asian. I find myself at a crossroads: as a European to condemn these collections of animals; as the soul of the world, to understand the idea of the world of these peoples who seem to me the most humanly authentic.

Yarsagumba is a unique caterpillar-fungus fusion that occurs when parasitic mushroom spores (Ophiocordyceps sinensis) infect and mummify a ghost moth larva living in the soil. A spindly fungus later sprouts from the dead caterpillar host’s head. Two to six centimeters long, the fungus shoots above the soil, acting as a tiny, finger-shaped flag for harvesters to find. This peculiar hybrid is the world’s most expensive biological resource.
