I’m truly in awe,my reaction to ‘Sounds of Silence.’ It’s impressive how a song from decades ago can still resonate so strongly and evoke such profound emotions. Simon & Garfunkel’s musical brilliance and lyrical prowess are undeniable, and this iconic track stands as a timeless reminder of the power of music to touch our hearts and souls.

Simon & Garfunkel were the real deal. 🙂 You can listen to anything from their greatest hits cd and probably love it. Also, Paul Simon has had an incredible solo career. That's a deep rabbit hole you can go down sometime. His Graceland cd is legendary.

Folk rock was still kinda new when this song was released but it was a strong voice for social protest, anti-war protest, women's rights, worker's rights and other issues.

I was a child when this came out & first heard it in '70, 4 yrs after its release. S&G's original version is my favorite because its warning of society's menacing indifference to reality of a creeping tyranny is so effective when blanketed in S&G's unassuming beautiful harmonies.

Now that you've reacted to the studio version, you may be interested in reacting to 2 great live versions. The first is a free concert they played at in Central Park for an enormous crowd in 1985. The other live version, was when they played at the 25 yr anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009. p.s. there is an interesting story behind the studio version you played, which people call the electric version. In the album prior to this one, Wednesday Morning 3AM, they played an acoustic version, which in the mid 1960's didn't go over that well. SOS was the song that put them on the map, so no one really knew them at the time. The electric version shot them to the top of the listening audience. It's ironic now, that most people prefer the acoustic version on the earlier album. I saw them play on their first tour in 1965, at the Providence College Hall. They played for 3 hours. After 2 long encores, Paul said, "We can't play anymore, because we've played everything we have". But they finished with a song they were working on for their next album, which was a beautiful ballad titled, 'Sparrow'.

I LOVE both the original and Disturbed's cover--one of the best covers of any song by anyone, ever. The original is a gentle warning with respect to the way society was evolving more than 50 years ago. Disturbed's version is a angry Jeremiad, condemning us for failing to heed the warning.

I love the write up you did for this song. Most reaction videos give the name of the song and the artist/artists, and maybe add a few words. You took the time to think about the song and then write a beautiful statement about it. I can imagine it would be hard to articulate your thoughts and feelings after hearing the iconic Simon & Garfunkel for the first time, singing this beautiful, eloquent, thought provoking song. Paul Simon is a true poet and brilliant composer. He also plays the guitar and sings beautifully. And Art’s voice is exquisite. As for their harmonies . . . Words fail me. They met in school in Queens NYC when they were eleven. Thanks to choir and musical productions they discovered that their voices blended well so they started getting together after school to work on harmonization. You’ve now heard the result of that hard work. Based on your reaction to this I really think you would enjoy listening to more S&G as well as songs from Paul’s solo career. Blessings.

I also highly recommend the Rotary Connection. Minnie Ripperton was a member of this cutting edge band in 60s/70s. The amazing song they're known for is 'I am the black gold of the sun'. So many people are introduced to this song now through the Disturbed version, and while I'm glad the song is being heard either way, I won't deny that I think the original carries way more emotional nuance. Unfortunately people hear David Draiman's voice and then everything after that is like a faint buzzing lol Not because he's loud (he is) but because he just approaches the song with such force. I've heard people complain that the original sounds "too happy", but that's what I mean by nuance. If this song sounds happy to you, it's because either you're not listening or you're used to artists hitting you over the head so you get the message. Admittedly, I could be biased because I'm almost 40 and was raised by a hippy. I like a powerful banger just as much as the next, but I just don't want my feelings spoon-fed to me.

I'm a little late with my comment, but I see that you haven't heard another Simon & Garfunkel song yet. Probably the most famous song of the two is "Bridge over Troubled Water": kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aq1djLRyxMjXf4k.html "The Boxer" is also often heard: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/opl8ebB9xNbcnI0.html One of my favorite songs of theirs is "America": kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e9VijdZytNLadYE.html "America" is a very special song for me because my favorite band YES wrote a cover version, or let's say a song based on Simon & Garfunkel's song. (they extended the song from 3:26 to 10:31. There isn't much left of the original) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gM9xl7aGu8-rnIk.html For me, the song is a "good mood guarantee"

People writing songs that voices never share.....no one dare, "disturb" the sound of silence....perfect lyrics that describe the control freak corporate radio play lists and the government/politicians banning songs and books. Plus there is so much musical junk out there drowning out the meaingful lyrics like from Simon and Garfunkel. Disturbed needs to write their own f-ing songs instead bastardizing Simon's song for their own financial gain. Just like when Green Day covered Knocking on Heaven's Door and an entire generation thought THEY wrote it [it was Bob Dylan].
