It was written sometime before March 1964. Simon & Garfunkel recorded the original, acoustic version March 10, 1964 & released it Oct. 1964, on their 1st album, Wednesday Morning, 3am. In June 1965, the original version was overdubbed with electric guitars, bass guitar & a drum kit (this version) & re-released Jan. 1966, on their 2nd album, Sounds of Silence.

Beautiful dark timeless lyrics. Forever relevant because it speaks to the human condition... the soul. This is the version I grew up with. The only version for me. Nothing else comes close. This came out in the '60s by the way. Check out their "Scarborough Fair" next. Some of the most beautiful harmonies you'll ever hear.

They had so much great music, Paul Simon is a musical genius, and his lyrics are second to only Bob Dylan. Art Garfunkel had the voice of an angel. They were magic together on every song on every album. Paul Simon's solo work is amazing, as well.

In 1965, the song began to attract airplay at radio stations in Boston, Massachusetts, and throughout Florida. The growing airplay led Tom Wilson, the song's producer, to remix the track, overdubbing electric instruments and drums. This remixed version was released as a single in September 1965. Simon & Garfunkel were not informed of the song's remix until after its release.
