in 1990 Lorna moved audiences at Rainbow and Stars with this chilling rendition of The Music that makes Me Dance I think this is the best version I have ever heard

My God can I hear a lot of her mother in this song. Absolutely Fabulous. To me Judy Garland was the best entertainer in every aspect of the word this world ever knew and Thank God she had not one but two daughters to carry on her legacy.

Her mother taight her well and Lorna paid attention. The voice of Judy comes out at certain moments. amazing !!

I adore Barbra Streisand and Diahann Carroll but this version gave me the chills and resonated with me so much. I love the way Lorna belted out the ending, much like Barbra in other songs.

Garland said that Lorna had the truer voice, but Liza was the born entertainer. And she was exactly right. Of course, Garland had both those things.

The quote I heard from Judy was "Lorna's my singer, and Liza's my dancer and I don't know about Joe yet, I don't think he's interested in performing. Maybe he do something artistic". My quote may not be exact, but, I'm close. This statement came in an interview celebrating the 1st anniversary of Carnegie Hall.

I have seen Lorna sing many times in concert and each time she is just out standing, a power house of a singer, one of the best live singers I have ever seen, she should be more well known than she seems to be in her own right, but a pure class lady and a class act.

Listening to this you wonder how on earth Lorna isn't one of the biggest stars in the world. I wish she'd had a crack at Funny Girl in her heyday. Imagine how amazing she'd be as Mama Rose or Mrs Lovett now?
@melizmatea38437 жыл бұрын
That's a great idea, really, I never thought of her as Mama Rose before, but I bet she would be great. She should be doing more. I saw her years ago doing a Jerry Herman revue (forget the name ) and she (and the show) was wonderful.

Reading the comments below really makes you realise what the Garland kids were up against. Icarus legend anyone? Judge the performance on its own merits; this is amazingly excellent if you forget the baggage. There is also this word, "prefer" if you must. Garland fans, of which i am one, should always spare a thought: You insult Judy by slagging off her kids, she would loath you for it. Let the Legend be, and enjoy today; there is a parade in front of you, make sure you look up before it passes by.
@oscar6462 жыл бұрын
Beautifully said RobJack. Reading all these asinine comments…..”oh so and so is better…on no so and so much better.” I want to pull my hair out. Hey folks, before your eyes a very able and accomplished performer is doing a smash up job of singing this wonderful song. These idiots don’t know how to live and I can assure if there is a wonderful parade passing before them, they’re pursing their lips in displeasure and holding their noses and ranting about the superiority of last year’s parade!

Judy also sang it on her TV series show which is her best performance. There are many great singers who have done excellent jobs worthy of praise singing this song. 🤔 however, if you listen and watch Judy, she truly owns this song. Barba Streisand never ever performed this song shortly after Judy Garland. That is saying a lot!🤗💌

Lorna and Barbra's version are completely different and incomparable. For starters, Lorna sings it in a lower key. It's like comparing apples and oranges.
@chrisn72595 жыл бұрын
It's not like apples and oranges at all. Lorna follows the Streisand performance note for note with very similar phrasing especially at the beginning. She is a fine singer, but she doesn't have that certain something extra that her sister, her mother and Streisand have; you can hear just a couple of notes and identify their voices immediately. They are unique. She isn't.
@canpat7195 жыл бұрын
I'd have to agree. That said Barbra's version is the absolute best version to me!
@JohnnyGNV5 жыл бұрын
I have to agree, she is quite a fine vocalist, one absolutely cannot take that from her - someone called her the Best Wedding singer money could buy and, unfortunately, while that sounds like some kind of a put-down, it's sort of true - whatever that strange, unidentifiable component is exactly, it isn't present in her but that honestly doesn't detract from her vocal ability.

I can hear Judy in her. She's wonderful. Both Liza and Lorna have the voice. With her mother being Judy Garland, she had some luck there. I never heard her before other than Grease II. That certainly didn't show her talent.

She sounds more like Streisand to me.
@bethpeters31872 ай бұрын
@robb7398 yes she does. Funny how you say that because Streisand I neen obsessed with since I was 7. She's everything to me as a singer goes. Agree?
@hanschristianbrando55882 жыл бұрын
She's sung it better at least once before at a Jule Styne tribute (just before introducing Liza with whom she then sang "If Mama Was Married"), but what a song and what a voice.

First I’ve hearing this. All I can say is WOW! She certainly is Judy Garland’s daughter!
@Ninafan684 жыл бұрын
Wow, I'm impressed. It's the best version I have heard of this song. I have always felt that Barbra's version was a little too restrained. This is a torch song and you need to open up the machine. I only wish she would not have done that variation on the last word, that sounds a little tacky and distracting. But the rest of the interpretation is so good that I am willing to overlook that questionable choice.

I agree with your thought on the last word. Keep it simple. Otherwise, great performance.

its a great performance as alaso is Judy s but Barbra 1966 performance is still the best. Lorna as Liza and Judy are emotional singers.The keys are lower than those used by Barbra Streisand and I think by also Barbara Cook when she played the role in 1967. But in this Styne song the emotion is important as also the way the singer sings the words and Lorna was very good. . as also was her mother..
@Streisand708 жыл бұрын
This song will always belong to The Barbra! Yah Lorna croaks out a few big notes here and there but the in between stuff is the reason that she isn't a huge star. What I mean is making the song your own with your own phrasing and interpretation. Liza could sing one line from this song and you would think that it s her song! I feel like she is just singing the notes here. Sorry! I am a Judy, Liza and sometimes Lorna fan.

Well, even her mother said that Lorna had the better voice. More quality and better range. Doesn’t mean that she was a better actress or better “entertainer,” just that she had a better voice.
@magicalmomentswithloni4835 Жыл бұрын
@@brapp5973 Judy made that comment when Lorna was a young girl appearing on her Christmas show. I’m sure she was building Lorna’s confidence and didn’t mean that comment would last into adulthood.
@brapp5973 Жыл бұрын
We can agree to disagree. But if you check with several voice coaches I think you will find that it’s unanimous that Lorna has always had a better voice.-better quality, more range, and truer tone. Nothing personal in this. Just stating the obvious.

Just for five minutes of your life try and forget about Judy! I know it is hard to do but the year is 2017 and other wonderful performers are now here at hand doing great stuff. I agree with you - no one can touch Judy but that is NO REASON not to appreciate a great performer like Lorna here doing a wonderful rendition of this great song. Whining about how you prefer Judy's version is just mean and tired, two things that the great Judy and the exquisite Lorna never are!
