What Ryan did is very impressive but if someone put in the hours per day, pretty much anyone can do it...I prefer to play chords myself and the way I'm able to remember how to play some songs is by visualisation and shapes the chords make. It's not easy but with any instrument repetition and practice is the key :)

Gosling's character was right, jazz music is different every night because they are improvising a good amount of the song, at the very least during solos. The other musicians will often play the chords and rhythm of a part of the song while one solos, and they pass around the solo basically in no predetermined way but in a way that still makes sense musically

Of course it also depends on what kind of jazz you mean. Jazz has gone through a lot of different forms. In any case, whichever kind of jazz you're talking about, no matter what Gosling's character said or rather whined, jazz is not dying.

Some clarifications on jazz, for anyone curious. Most of the time there is a rehearsed part, called the head, which is the main melody/intro to the whole thing. After that, the rest of the band start improvising music on the spot based on what the melody was. It's very much freestyle and flowing. Great reaction btw!

The beauty is in its simplicity. The movie had a simple story but the overall cinematography was absolutely beautiful along with the chemistry between the two leads. The lighting was stellar. The soundtrack was catchy. The editing was top notch. The ending was perfect. The audience got to see them together even if they didn’t end up together. Perfectly bittersweet. I don’t see it as boring whatsoever and enjoyed how toned down it was compared to other musicians. It’s far and above my favorite movie and I’m not even a musical fan.

Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling always have this tension between them in every movie they were in together, and I loved it! I was honestly surprised when they didn't actually get together in real life, and just stayed as best friends, which is totally fine. I simply love their connection, and hope they are in a film together in the future. Now back to the movie.

Skipping the jazz part because so many people already explained it, and with me once being in band and have a sister in a jazz ensemble, what they are saying is true. Now for the ending: I actually really love the ending. I'm glad it went the separate ways in a love story. Not a lot of romance movies would do that unless the characters have a nasty falling out which explains why they split up. If two characters were decent with each other, the movie would have done the typical characters wait for each other and getting back together ending. But no, they actually split them up, live separate lives, and the two are friendly with each other. Bittersweet to some, but that's life, and I wish more romance movies have an ending like this where where the main characters don't get together whether they had a falling out or just grew apart.

The color direction is like it’s own evolving character (beginning: bright, vibrant colors to symbolize their hopeful futures ahead of them. as well as their love for one another. middle: darker more neutral tones to rep. their maturity. ending: a combo of both bright and darker colors to show how they’ve morphed and blended together to end up there.). I have to agree with you on the simplicity of the plot itself but at the same time, I was kinda surprised that they ended it in such a way that the two characters didn't end up together but it's still sort of a 'happy ending.' They got what they both wanted even though they were no longer together because they weren't happy where they were. It's more realistic for their characters. I think in real life, two people need to be supporting each other and give way for the other in order for things to work out. Because she still wanted to fulfill her dreams, she can't because she needs to support him and he can't do the same for her.

La La Land is what life is REALLY like when you find the right person at the WRONG time in your life. It hurts but it’s a real part of life and there’s no way to romanticize more than this. I just hope that people find their “happily ever afters” without the terrible parts. Life finds a way to make you experience the ugly regardless, so no matter what it’ll always be an equal experience. Thank you for this reaction. When I watched this with my GF at the time, I kinda knew it was foreshadowing and it was. I miss her. But life is that way. I like to compare this movie to “signing in the rain”. That film doesn’t rely on its musical numbers and its plot could still work relatively well without them. The epilogue here can be traced directly to the scene in Gene Kelly’s head in “SITR”. City of Stars is the equivalent of Gene Kelly signing Signin in the Rain. It’s is a great movie that doesn’t rely on its numbers to drive the plot. That what makes a film great and not just a musical. That what makes this film better than THE PROM. I enjoy The Prom, but this film is so much better

Which is nice because they are able to use the numbers to enhance the experience, not to carry the film. I think the point is that the plot is simple and relatable, but it all feels very grand with the cinematography. They use a back and forth motion between the two main characters with their current life directions to lead to the eventual split between them. Although it is simple, they are able to pull it off so well. They make a relatively normal story that a lot of people can relate to. I think that as viewers, we expect so much to happen since often times we expect the relationships between the main characters of a movie to be insanely monumental, but in reality, a lot of people in this exact dynamic break up and never come back together, but to us they don’t fall hand in hand because we obviously lack the what could’ve been montage, the music, the chemistry and banter etc
@valynambrose
@valynambrose 6 ай бұрын
A lot of people who are big musical fans didn’t exactly like la la land because of its focus on the cinematography, but I really think that’s what makes it a modern masterpiece. It’s impactful in short scenes, they’re attentive to small details, the characters are passionate but we see that they are affected so heavily by each other and choose to compromise. In a way, mia and Sebastian were similar to jazz composition, as when Sebastian was chasing his melody and passion, mia was compromising, which later switches. When compared to say broadway musicals, I get that the plot is not as grand. But keep in mind la la land is still considered a musical FILM.

It's refreshing to watch a reactor who feels free to be a critic. It seems like other reactors stick with the positive to not offend fans of the movie, which I totally get. But I'm in complete agreement that this movie overall didn't feel like a musical. At times it did, but plot sections would get long and I'd forget, and suddenly there was singing and dancing out of nowhere. This is why I much prefer The Greatest Showman (same composers), which felt much more like a consistent musical.

I think the problem with them as a couple was that she expects too much from people and is fixed in her ideas not allowing room to change or vary and that he takes his troubles out on other people and has a tendency to come off as sulky. In any case Chicken on a Stick is a terrible name for a jazz club and so are his reasons for wanting to call a club that. I know it's a reference to Charlie Parker but if so then at least call it 'Bird' or 'Yardbird' since those were his actual nicknames.

I appreciate your perspective. For me, I liked this much better than the musicals you refer to for the exact opposite reason you like them. I always hated when 2 people would be having a conversation and all of a sudden they break out into song. It's what I didn't like about musicals. So I understand why you didn't like this movie as well as the musicals you are used to and love. Also, you never get true enjoyment when people build it up so much you get disappointed. What II did really enjoy was your reactions while watching this movie as you try to figure out what was going to break them apart. We of course knew what would happen, so it was interesting to hear your thoughts as you watched. You did a nice job analyzing the agrument they had, but I was hoping to see your reaction as it happened. I was so sad and stunned like she was sitting there! What he said to her really upset me .. "Maybe you liked me when I was on my ass 'cause it made you feel better about yourself". It was so cruel and didn't match what their relationship had been like. But as I think about it now, it was very realistic because that's what people do in an argument - they say something they would really regret saying just to get the upper hand. You did comment you thought it was over the top. Thank you for this video - extremely interesting and thought-provoking.

The freeway scene was the 110 over the105. What’s funny is something similar happened once on the 105 when there was a huge deadly car crash and ambulances couldn’t get to the cars dueto the traffic and people trying to off-road to go around but getting stuck. I was stuck with the car turned off for 5 hours and people were playing music and dancing between the cars with strangers. It happened about 4 or 5 years before La La Land so I wouldn’t be surprised if someone involved with the film was also stuck with me at the same time.

I know what they were doing with the 'what could've been' segment, but in it till could've had a plot twist. Even the 50s MGM musicals it referenced had a plot twist where something went wrong only to be resolved again later. That's what a story is. They weren't just stories where one good thing happened after another.

10:41 In a jazz band every member tends to get a solo and solos are improv most of the time, but the rest of the song is rehearsed. So yes and no, but jazz solos can also be several minutes long, sooo, I guess yeah sure there is probably a lot of new material every other gig

as a fellow musical lover, I enjoyed this movie a lot. it's no West Side Story (my favorite), but it gets a 'thumbs up' from me. as someone who had their heart broken by their first love, the ending of this movie broke me. I could not think straight for weeks... I've been happily married for 17 years, but every once in a while I do wonder what my life would've been like with my first love...

Sometimes love isn't enough. It takes more than love but there needs to be a compatibility in both parties decision to fully commit to the relationship. Both are so ambitious and they both need to fulfill their goals but if one partner is not fulfilled in their lives, one can't truly be supportive. They've decided they just weren't right for each other although they're in love.

If you have to sacrifice what you really truly want out of life for another person, you're going to end up resenting them for that and the relationship will either fall apart completely or be deeply unfulfilling. Especially if one partner gets to continue what they wanted in life while the other has to give it up as a sacrifice because both of their life plans go in vastly different directions.

I loved this reaction so much, it made me think about so many things. At the same time i'm like, of course it's gonna be boring if you alredy heard all the songs and alredy know what's gonna happen, not a minor detail but the main plot and intrigue of the whole film. I imagine myself watching Chicago for the first time in thoes circumstances and it sounds awful, there's no way you can have a journey and experience if you alredy have 80% of it stolen, movies are just meant to be seen for the first time as new production, it has quiet scenes for you to process the music, plot changes etc, cuz it's gonna be all new. Otherwise you only have the visuals left.

Yeah the pool scene made me a little motion-sick, not gonna lie. Too much spinning... So would you have found this movie a little less boring if the music/dancing/performing was diegetic to the plot, vs non-diegetic? The magical realism in the film seems very day-dream-like, as in the fantasies fill a roll for the purpose of character expansion and relationship building...but they do seem a big jarring at time. As a counterpoint, take Moulin Rouge where, from the get-go, the world the film is set it feels just the tiniest bit out of sync with our own. The Paris of the film is architecturally similar, the time period feels consistent, the costumes work, all of that lines up...but everything feels like it's one High C from kicking off a dance number. This makes sense for the purposes of Baz Lurhmann's story being told almost entirely through music; the performances and sexual taboos and jealousy and love provide the framing device. Even the time period, set at the turn of the century, feels sufficiently removed from modern society to provide a certain level of suspension of belief; it's long-enough ago that we can apply a level of surreal acceptance to all the crazy over-the-top-show-stopper numbers we see. So when every character kicks off the story or conflict or rising action with another musical performance, it fits...it feels diegetic to the world establish, we almost expect it to happen. With La La Land...I dunno. The musical numbers are stylish, bright and colorful when need be, somber and isolating when appropriate, both our leads undergo a certain level of change and growth aided by the fantasy/magical detachment elements in the film. So why do certain elements feel removed from what a typical musical might display? Perhaps I'm a bit cynical, but part of what makes the film stylish is also what removes me from it. The modern setting doesn't help...traffic jams, early 2000s LA, vocal/slang quips, settings in peoples private homes, they all work as ways to tell the audience where and when and in some cases how people are interacting. They even move the plot along in some instances (HOOOOONK!). But then the music cues in, out of nowhere...and people move toward each other, cautious, curious, an unseen force driving them to move and sing and express...which changes the set, drastically sometimes, to this hyper-literal sound-stage for a number to commence-upon and be played-out. And yes yes it's beautiful and expressive and artistically engaging, but for ME, someone who saw the film and found themselves grounded more in the REAL Los Angeles, with REAL people struggling to find a REAL way to make their careers/relationships/lives finally come together, it becomes more distracting. The phantom of the opera movie from a while back has the same effect: on a stage, the magical realism makes the live, in-person performance more palpable and grounded, which makes the music/dancing/emoting more diegetic to the performance overall. But for a film where it can't hang it's hat on anything specific...I'm not sure I buy it, subconsciously. It almost feels like they should have gone in whole-hog, like with Moulin Rouge, or functionally remove the more abstract/fantastical elements for a more grounded, realistic love story...like Crazy, Stupid Love (ironic), or Blue Valentine. Since we're on the subject, what was your overall impression of how LA was portrayed? Was it sterilized, washed, did it feel honest and real? Interested in your appraisal. Great vid though! -J

I prefer my musicals to be non-diegetic! I prefer when characters use songs to express their thoughts as opposed to scenes where singing makes sense in the situation (for example, a band playing at a rock show). I adore Moulin Rouge! It's over-the-top stylistically, but that's how it is established. The tone and imagery are consistent throughout the film, which is what made the "dancing in the stars" scene in La La Land, as you said, jarring. Although I do like the dreamy vibe it gave off, it did feel inconsistent. There was definitely a lull in the middle of the film, which is where there was the least amount of singing LOL I always try to give original movie musicals a chance since there's a lower level of expectations (except for The Greatest Showman, I dislike that movie a lot). But for movie musicals adapted from stage productions, I do tend to err on the side of caution because they're always hit-or-miss. I've never seen the movie version of Phantom of the Opera because I prefer the stage production a lot. There are a lot of musicals out there that just do not translate well into movies (i.e. Cats..). The portrayal of LA... Well, I lived in southern California for 5 years but only visited LA sparingly (I hated driving through it LOL). They showed off LA in a very touristy way? With the shots that they decided to show. And although they tried to portray Mia as a struggling actress, nothing about her really signified a struggle? She lived in a decent (and kind of big) apartment with her own room, she had auditions to go to, had callbacks. Also found it kind of ironic that Sebastian said that LA worships everything and values nothing because they are both in the little bubble. There was a certain lack of genuineness from both characters like how Sebastian wants to open a jazz club, but I didn't really see that much effort on his end? It was mere coincidence that John Legend's character offered him a job. LA is oversaturated with aspiring actors and actresses, and the way that LA was portrayed in this movie made sense in that aspect because it's following one of them. I do wish we saw more struggle though. Mia tried finding a gig for 6 years, but we only see the one year of it? Overall, it was enjoyable, but yeah, I think it could've been improved

@@SophiaPhannn Reeeeeaally, why didn't you like Greatest Showman? I have my own issues with it but would love to hear your take. Also my sister would agree with you, she lives in New York and has been looking for a steady acting gig for years...tiny apartment, unemployed because of Covid, auditioning all the time with only so much to show for it. She saw this film and said "Damn, I should have moved west instead of east, struggling artists aren't struggling so much in the city of angels" lol. And yeah, Sebastian's take on worship vs value comes across as nihilistic and jaded, but perhaps he's earned that POV, just like some would be bitter over the economy refusing to rebound or how the government has been slipshod in responding to/containing a global pandemic. Their dynamic and struggle makes Mia and Sebastian's separation a little more sad...he was her support, her grounding and encouragement, she was optimism, passion and proof that life isn't as dreary and predictably disappointing as he once believed. Losing either is probably not fatal, but still breaks your heart a little.

Oh I could go ON about The Greatest Showman. But the main reason is that I just really don't like the plot and none of the characters were particularly likable. With movies based off of real people, I usually take it with a grain of salt because it's fictional and dramatized. But PT Barnum in the film had such a savior complex and ultimately wasn't that great of a person to be forgiven at the end, so that left a bit of a sour taste. Also, Zac Efron's and Zendaya's relationship was so underdeveloped that I couldn't even believe that they were in love. The music was OKAY. I liked some songs, and I consume pop music like every other person. But something about the soundtrack was off for me; it was a bit too poppy, too overproduced? I also personally didn't really like how the music didn't really fit with the setting of the film; it threw me off the first time I watched it. Sometimes that can work (i.e. Hamilton), but I usually don't like it. Acting is a tough career to pursue. I've had my thoughts about doing it too, but I'm just not as persistent and resilient when it comes to rejection and acting is all about that. I would've thought Mia and Sebastian would've kept in contact while she was in Paris, but I guess she just had to let everything go to make way for a new life. They complimented each other so well, it was a poignant ending
@JH-cs5py
@JH-cs5py 3 жыл бұрын
@@SophiaPhannn Yeah Hugh Jackman was giving it his all, it looked more exhausting than any of the X-Men films at times...or Australia, another Lurhmann vehicle. But I agree that the historical Barnum and the film rendition were a little dissonant. The music plays into that, certainly, but there didn't seem to be any lasting consequences for Barnum's behavior, his anger or his implied adultery either...he gets to live happily every after. As for Anne Wheeler and Phil Carlyle, they're both drop dead gorgeous (especially Zendaya, holy sh*t) but I'm not sure their attractiveness translates to engaging, developed or believable. Had it not been for their Cirque do Soleil style number, I probably would have forgotten about both of them. Long distance love is ROUGH...but the bittersweet nature of the ending also harshly reflects some of the duality in the film; dreams vs responsibility. Like it's saying "yes, follow your dream, work hard, don't give up" but it SHOWS that the consequence of that are "yeahhhh, your career will take you places, sometimes far away from the things or places or people you love, and if your career is important enough to you, you'll need to sacrifice the things you have to achieve it. We call it growing up. Deal with it." Mia and Sebastian followed a path of least resistance/responsible adulting with regards to what happens with their relationship...and it makes the "what could have been" sequence kind of gut-punch. I'm honestly not sure what I would do if I were them, in that situation. You could act! Very expressive face, you're reaction at 18:59 was great lol.
