This video has completely changed the way I approach lead guitar, and I have watched countless videos that never seemed to help me improve. I watched this video about 6 months ago when I bought my electric guitar and I have improved drastically just because of this video. I am self taught on acoustic and had some lead guitar basis there but I could only play one style/sound (very Jack Johnson like). Now because of this video I can play lead phrases that can match various genres that I’ve been trying to create in. Thank you so much for sharing this lesson with all of us. I can stress enough how many “lead guitar” or “guitar solo” tip videos I’ve watched and of all them yours was the key to my progression. Respect 🫡

You've just explained one of the hardest concepts so easily; which most guitarists usually fail to execute properly. The technique is to just let go, be calm and feel the rhythm. This concept is very deep yet very simple. Thank you! Keep going!

Incredible, sub consciously I'm doing this but I could not make any sense of why. Now it all makes. My grandma that passed played the guitar and she always said to sing. I finally get it now Sing with the guitar , people may not know what your saying but you already know that "you like pizza".

I usually don't comment on youtube vidoes but I couldn't help myself. I am mostly taught guitar through youtube and there's so much information out there that it can be overwhelming. But your videos are so simple and concise. I have been playing seriously for only a few years so I know all the basic chords and the pentatonic scale and that's about it. I just got finished practicing over a backing track with the pentatonic scale as I usually do and always find myself repeating the same licks or phrases and try my best to step outside the box but your "creature of habit" comment is spot on. As soon as I finished practicing I came on youtube and this video came up in my recommended and it helped me so much. I want to thank you. You have a gift for teaching.

I just came across this video and this truly opened my eyes to phrasing. As someone who played scale-based solos, this opened a new door for me. I did “I like pizza, i like pizza too,” and added a “do you?” Every fourth bar and I cannot believe how melodic it sounds! Great stuff! Thank you!

I believe Frank Zappa talked about spending time doing this. Just having normal conversations with people and matching your emphasis and timing on one note over and over.

He did this interesting experiment where he had Steve Vai notate his speech and then play his guitar along with it. His song Jazz Discharge Party Hats does this. Love Frank Zappa, best musician of all time.

I tried this out today, and I wanted to say that it almost feels like the reason I'm hearing the words with my notes is because I want it to say that, like people who hear their cat or dog say "I love you," but, no, it ACTUALLY WORKS at having you "sing the notes," if you will, with your fingers, like you're a singer, as you play the notes to the sayings you come up with, the words come out THROUGH the notes (the syllables/rhythms/patterns)! AWESOME! 😀 Thank you, Stich! ☺️👍

Call and Response!!! Sometimes it looks like people are talking to themselves while they're laying down a lead. I've often wondered if they weren't using this very approach. It's probably the best way to come up with a lyrical sounding solo for those of us that aren't blessed with being natural born virtuosos.

that is the key to lead playing..if you cant hear a phrase or lick in your head..you cant play it. The better players just have a knack of tuning into a song that then leads to a solo..I do try !

This is best guitar lesson I ever came across on KZfaq. For anyone who wants to solo but kinda gets befuddled with chords and scales,this is perhaps the most effective way to do it. Rhythm is the key, the number of notes dont really matter but how you create phrases within those notes . Love how simple he makes it look, the basics of phrasing. Great job, great lesson,simple and effective.

a couple years ago, on one of your live chats I told you my frustration with my in person guitar teacher. I asked them how do you improvise and his response was "you really can't teach it - you just have to get it." You called him a quite appropriate name and I stopped going to him. That is a really interesting way to present phrasing to ppl 1st learning about it. Alot of ppl think about playin fast solos with lots of bends and super bluesy right outta the gate. But you really do have to crawl b4 you walk by learning the concept. And this is a very interesting way to do it. Bravo sir!! 👏

I don't think that I've ever laughed so hard when a person played a solo, but I busted out laughing when he played the first four notes after the backing track started! I must admit, this method of teaching phrasing is genius! I had a jazz piano instructor who taught me a similar method some years ago. I struggled with my solos, but he told me to say, "I like fly-ing kites" through the keys during one lesson. It felt like with world of improvisation opened up to me. lol. This video brings back memories while causing me to get a bit hungry cause, "I really like pizza"!

This is a really unique approach but really accomplishes the idea of being lyrical/melodic in your playing. I imagine you could take the subtext of a song and sing that message through the guitar
