When people tell me Alex Lifeson's guitar solos have no feeling, I show them this piece of music. Even though most Rush songs are technically challenging in some way, this one really pushes the limits. They all show off but Alex takes it to another level. It's clear why so many guitarists are inspired by him.

So glad you did this one!! The part named “Monsters” that you so lovingly call “the cartoon part” was written on the original version. (They switch Villa up a lot over the yrs, in the 80’s Alex did the band introductions in Villa and later, switched things up just to make it fun). “Monsters” actually WAS a cartoon riff written by Raymond Scott called Powerhouse in 1936. It was used in cartoons thru the 40’s and 50’s. (I guess they got that in their heads from cartoons they may have watched as kids). By the time RUSH mgmt was informed of the infringement, the statute had run out. Being the nice guys that they were they sent Scott a one time payment because they thought that was the right thing to do! Great humble guys!! Really enjoyed this one a lot! Be well and God bless… from Texas!! #Riptaylorhawkins #foofighterfamily #ripneil

If you want to see more "sick Geddy", check out "Where's My Thing?", live from Dallas (CWA tour). Geddy is a madman on that and there is a great Neil Peart solo too! Great instrumental! Also, to answer your question, they put the "cartoon" theme in there -- the song is called "Powerhouse" -- because 1) it is a fun way to describe "monsters" through music, 2) it's Public Domain so it doesn't cost anything to use and 3) because they all grew up on Saturday morning cartoons and it's got sentimental value for them, and us, for that reason! It rocks! :)

So glad you said this, Clem. The entire song was a musical guided tour through the "wierd house" of Alex's dreamscape. Came about because he was always regailing the other two band members about "this strange dream I had", so they wrote a song about it! More of the great humor of Rush.

Sorry, but Geddy *did not* get that bass flourish from Les Claypool. You will find the exact same flourish as far back as 1982 Exit Stage Left (CD version). Then he repeats it in the Rio tour. So, to be clear, Geddy Lee *did not* "get that" lick from Les Claypool of Primus.

This is a great performance and it's visually awesome. My favorite performance is still the "Exit, Stage Left" audio version (that is, it wasn't included in the film version, just the CD). Alex plays and amazing solo on the electric guitar, as opposed to the classical guitar he uses on the studio version) and it's a really rocking version, all around.

The performance of LVS on Exit Stage Left is, for me, the peak ferocity of live Rush. The climax of Alex’s solo on the “A Lerxst in Wonderland” segment of the song is their most intense musical moment IMO. To me it compares sonically and emotionally with the climax of Sackett’s solo on “Firth of Fifth” from the live Genesis album “Seconds Out.” Both feature very intense lead guitar solos that use genius level phrasing & dynamics to build to mind blowing climaxes sitting atop a bed of growling synths and drummers putting exclamation points on the moment that creates a wonderfully overwhelming eargasm. Both are must listens for fans of this kind of music.

@@pablozee6359, yes, I do see parallels with Steve Hackett’s FOF solo! I also love some of the hooks and riffs that Geddy pulls off in the main Strangiato theme, from the early part of the song and in the closing. Incredible live performance!

greatest part about these men, they never took themselves too seriously. Alex is always cracking jokes. so much fun to see them live. the Time Machine Tour was so amazing. Glad I got to see them live. Yes Geddy learned a few "flamenco" bass tricks from Les as well as Les learned some other bass things. They were all 3 wanting to learn and pass on what they learned to others. This song on the Live in Rio tour was great. Alex "introducing his back up band" is just too dang funny. great job and keep going down the rabbit hole.

The movement you said sounded like it came from a cartoon, is titled "Monsters", and the actual song taken there is called "Powerhouse", a very early jazz piece, which Looney Tunes used periodically in especially busy cartoon scenes, sometimes related to factory mass production activities, but also from a Bugs Bunny bit about, you guessed it, monsters.

All the segments including the cartoony bit were each representing the weird dreams and nightmares Alex was having at the time. That's why it sounds like a Frankenstein's monster. Because it is! Watch "Dinner with Rush" you will see how much of a sense of humor they have and then you will understand that sometimes they do things that absolutely meant to be funny and sometimes it's an inside joke that most casual listeners of Rush don't get. I've been a member of the Rush Army since 1975, seen them several times in the 70's/early 80's.. to me that was their best music... IMO.

I might not have picked this version, but after watching it, I agree that anything from this show is great. (I might have been one of the ones who said it in a comment to a previous video). One more from this performance that can't be missed is the seminal track, 'Freewill'. Freewill is one of their biggest hits and the breakdown/solo section in the middle of the song from this performance is 3 musicians going crazy - together. There is a section of La Villa that borrows a riff from Powerhouse that was used in Looney Tunes cartoons when anything mechanical was happening on the screen - Rush forgot to acknowledge it in the liner notes but did end up later reconciling and paying Powerhouse for their use of the riff.

Now I can have my coffee. LOL The official video which I highly recommend starts off differently. It starts off with Alex shredding. On the album on an acoustic guitar and on an electric guitar in the video. This is a really good version of the song as well. This song as you more than likely know is about a series of nightmares that Alex Lifeson had. I am thinking the monsters in his were like cartoon monsters? Just a guess. Please watch the official video. It is pretty basic, just them playing the song live without an audience. Now to get up and have a coffee. Thanks for starting my day with some Rush. Cheers

La Villa Strangiato was their first standalone instrumental. They had instrumental passages in longer pieces (Overture and Grand Finale of 2112, for example), but never just a separate standalone piece. When it came out, it was so different we didn't know what to think of it. It didn't follow normal rock conventions, being odd even by their own standards, and had jazzy overtones. It was VERY cool and led the way for so many more instrumentals over the years. And I still think Alex's lead in it is one of his best compositions to date.

It's so crazy to hear the various changes and areas where the band has opened up the scope of the song to embrace a more improvisational element mostly with Tempo and things here and there. The basic Arrangement is still pretty much the same as it was in 78. But the band in general as they have grown together have adopted a looser more Jazz fluidity whereas they were kind of M perfect back in the day and pretty straight-forward unlike so many other Progressive bands of the time especially the ones that influenced rush, you have to remember that these were a working Bar band that evolved into prog-rock as opposed to some group of dudes that were all Music School

Here is a little info on the section you hate. The song that inspired the "Monsters!" section was the 1936 song "Powerhouse" by Raymond Scott. Warner Brothers music director Carl Stalling used "Powerhouse" in his Warner Brothers cartoon scores during the '40s and '50s. The music wasn't originally written for cartoons, publishing rights for a limited catalog of Raymond Scott's titles were sold to Warner Brothers in 1943. Yet not only was "Powerhouse" used in the old "Merrie Melodies" and "Looney Tunes" cartoons, it has been sampled more recently by other bands such as Devo and They Might Be Giants)- Fast forward to 1 minute 27 seconds into the video to hear the melody. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j8x0pLVly9eth3k.html

On your own time, check out the official video (filmed live expressly for the video, so it has some very slight variations from the album version), or the original studio version, to hear the song in its "pure" form with Alex's solo intro and build-up to the main theme. I mean, if you decided to react to LVS a THIRD time, I'm still gonna watch it. :D But don't feel obligated. Continued... graduates or the like. So they were coming from very different 3-piece hard rock kind of mindset. I think they themselves might have been a bit scared to deviate too far from their orchestrations and Arrangements in the earlier days because in the back of their minds they weren't necessarily Genesis or Jethro Tull or whatever King Crimson Etc... but by this performance they just were so confident and had grown into themselves so well that it's really great as a longtime fan to see the progression. Lastly in any other band... Any other band... And I mean any other Damn Band lifeson would be considered Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Etc... But because he is in Rush with those other two giant players, he's always sort of been the odd third wheel and doesn't necessarily get the credit he deserves as the perfect guitarist for this band.

I see you're really starting to get "it." It's a Rush being a Rush fan! The cartoon part is the section titled "Monsters." The song was a recreation of a dream Alex had. Another great instrumental is "Main Monkey Business." It has a nice groove and is actually danceable.

Ok -- now that you've seen this version of La Villa, now you can get in on Alex's "still no guitar" version. haha. Just the first 3 minutes of this video for a laugh: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a8Wdlbyrsp7FqKM.html
