If you travel in the way back machine, Randy Meisner sings lead on an incredible live performance from 1977 "Take It To The Limit'', generally regarded as the quintessential version of the song.

Your comments on the vocals, are spot on, but maybe the most impressive thing is they are singing at this high of quality, at ages of guys in their early to mid 70s. Every Rock/Pop singer will tell you, that it's the voice that's the first to go. It's amazing how good they sound in their older age. Thanks

Henley and Frey were the primary lead singers. Timothy B. Schmidt and Randy Meisner performed lead vocals on two hit songs they co-wrote with Frey and/or Henley. Otherwise, Henley and Frey were the equivalent of McCartney and Lennon as far as songwriting and lead vocals for their respective bands.

Glenn Frey sang Lead a lot in the beginning but everybody in the band can sing and harmonize. In later years in the band Glenn Frey kind of laid back and let the other guys sing. One of his last great performances was on Heartache Tonight on the Long Run album as far as lead vocal on a track from a record

They were perfectionists. It shows all over but nobody talks about the live performance quality. It always meets or exceeds the studio quality. Other bands come out live and have a good time. You can recognize your favorite songs but when the Eagles do a song live you can hear every instrument, every single voice. Imagine just trying to get Don Henley's voice over the top of his drums. Yes, I know he has been caught lip syncing in later years but the Melbourne concert is real and sounds as good as the studio. I think those who don't like the Eagles do so because they are perfectionists.

Excellent choice and one of my favorites. The Eagles at time were at the peak of the career becoming more rock oriented with Joe Walsh. Timothy B. Smith was a great addition to Eagles. He was part of POCO and always wanted to join the band. Eagles has its roots with POCO. Influencers on the Eagles career : Jackson Browne and Linda Rodastat

I always liked how Don Henley, primarily a drummer, at the Hell Freezes Over concert (1994), at about 5 minutes in, he stopped the orchestra while they were practicing and told the conductor that one of the strings was playing his part incorrectly. So, the conductor asked the guy to play a Cappella (i.e. alone, w/o other instruments or accompaniment), which he did, and Don was right. The guy was playing an incorrect note. Amazing, the group, and amazing is their incredible attention to detail.

Possibly my favourite of all the Eagles songs too, and I love most of their tracks - there are a lot of exceptionally good ones to choose from, spanning quite a lot of genre. Only things missing in the incarnation of the band shown here are (i) RAndy Meisner, whose harmonies on this track in the 70s lifted the song to an even higher level than this - difficult to imagine, i know - and (ii) Don Felder, although Stuart Smith does a really brilliant job on this track.

I would suggest you go back in time a little more when Don Felder was with them. The guy doing the bulk of the lead guitar work is a fill-in because they fired Don Felder. He was a AWESOME guitarist and responsible for most of their killer lead guitar. He also provided a lot of vocals. Don't get me wrong, Joe Walsh did his share of lead guitar work too, AND even some lead and background vocals, but most of the really catchy, well-known (definitive Eagles) leads/licks were Don's. However, everything changed when they were recording Victim Of Love. Don Felder had originally recorded the lead vocals, but while he was away, they (Don Henley and Glen Frey) decided 2 things: 1), they wanted to change the way the money was split, with more going to them and less to everyone else, and 2) they decided they didn't like Don Felder's vocals. So, without even telling him about it, they erased the lead vocals that he already laid down for Victim Of Love, and rerecorded them with Don Henley doing the lead vocals. When Don Felder found out, he was rightfully upset, but when he questioned them about the money situation, they fired him. Anyway, I think you'd really like the guitarwork that Don Felder did. Here's a link to Eagles with Don Felder, doing Hotel California live (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zp9oZpx11brHpIk.html ). Here's a link from the same concert (1977) doing One Of These Nights (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y8pjl6yYyLm9Y2Q.html ). I think it's even better than the one you saw here. They also have the original Randy Meisner on bass who did a lot of their higher register work. The vocals are better, more "present" and the lead is much sharper, like the studio version. Update: I brought you something special ... a link to them doing the studio version of I Can't Tell You Why (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hcqToZmi0J-Ykqc.html ) ... a beautiful song with song sweet vocals and lead guitar work.

@@breakdownlounge9541 I'd go with: From the At Fillmore East album, Whipping Post, Stormy Monday, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed and Trouble No More. Just a note, these are usually LONG versions and Whipping Post is 23 minutes long, but it's the best version. For a shorter version, see the last album mentioned (below). From the Eat A Peach album, One Way Out, Les Brers In A Minor, Melissa, Trouble No More, Blue Sky or Little Martha. From the Brothers and Sisters album, Ramblin' Man and Jessica. From the "The Allman Brothers Band" album, Whipping Post (the short version). There are videos of some of the live performances that are either synced to other versions or are just a little less "good" as the ones off the live albums I mentioned but, that are always good. @@breakdownlounge9541 In so many ways. You learnt & mastered your chosen instrument. Natural talent. 60's was the best, 70's still great. 80's took a new turn with the synth... It all started to go wrong with the manufactured crap & boy bands circa 1988...

@@philtheecow3404 That echoes what I've always told people. Recording technology was becoming so good and was allowing for all kinds of crazy new sounds and experimentation and with where we were culturally and creatively it was just the perfect combination of all factors, but the technology wasn't SO GOOD that you could fake it. You still had to be great at what you did and hence why the era produced the most good music we've ever had. And like you said, a few years later the tech started getting good enough that people could chop and cut and...really not have to be as skilled as their peers where just a decade or two prior. People just started phoning it in and letting computers do the leg work, producing really generic and boring sounds without human soul. It wasn't all trash, but to me, it always felt like such a departure from 60 and 70's.

True fact, this is what President Obama said when he awarded the eagles their medals. His exact words were,", the eagles sold more records albums then any other musician in the 20th century, and that's quite an accomplishment considering all the great musicians in the 20th century". That's a fact
