The beauty is always in simplicity, and Kanami knows how to find that beauty in any complex riff and make it simple and beautiful. I also find how such beauty manifests in Hibana riff. Kanami indeed no doubt genius; and I conviniently call her Goddess of simplicity and beauty. LIVE LONG AND PROSPER KANAMINCHO... LIVE FOREVER BAND-MAID!!!

Moratorium is my favorite Band-Maid song. There have songs that took me a couple listens then loved, but to answer your question about getting hooked on a band later, I have not had that experience. I've been super jaded over music for over a decade. At 35 I thought 99% of all my favorite songs were already written decades ago. Last year at this time, I heard Band-Maid during the Netflix movie "Kate," shazamed Blooming so I could listen later, (didn't notice who it was by), then got kinda bored during the movie and instantly hooked by Choose Me to the point I paused the movie and shazamed it and listened to it two or three times repeatedly on spotify. Never looked up anything about them. Finished the movie, forgot about Blooming somehow, but listened to Choose Me again, the next suggestion for them was Thrill and I got maybe 30 seconds in and said, *literally said, "This is the best band this decade."* Not even joking 1 song and 30 seconds of another in and I was convinced. It was only after that, that I looked them up and Wikipedia'd them and found out/realized it was an all-female band wearing maid outfits. I wondered what I had gotten myself into. 😆Still half-couldn't believe it tbh. What are the odds an all-female, Japanese band _with enough sense of humor to wear maid outfits_ would make the best version of early 00's rock/punk/pop/metal that I love with killer solos? Seemed far too good to be true. I was trying to find signs it was their live videos were fake until I determined that if you can fake it that well then it's just as easy to actually play. It took a couple days then I remembered, "Oh yeah, there was another song in that movie I meant to look up." It said Band-Maid. That was Band-Maid??? They had two songs in the movie? I thought I was in the Truman Show or something lol. They made me fall in love with music again and the past year has been eye opening musically. I will always love Band-Maid for that.

Wow that is an awesome story! You are the first person to mention the movie Kate is what got you into them. I remember when we were saying how that could be good for the band but the movie didn’t look that good.

How many of us got the same exact experience with BAND-MAID, really phenomenal. As you asked in 0:42 - "Do you have any band...?" This I would like to answer. I'm a guitarist from late 70s to early 80s. So, to those years passed I found Iommi, Blackmore, Bratta and my most favourite one - Page, really innovative within their own styles; and truely, they openned a lot of genres to the metal universe. Then, time passed, things changes and rock genres started to wane and couldn't find any music that catches my attention. I used to listen to Malmsteen, to Cacophony (Becker and Friedman) and even Nightwish; but only short live, as they couldn't catch deep my attention. But, in late 2017, as I was trying to find next favourite one I found Baby Metal interesting. Surely enough, the algorithm of YT recommended me BAND-MAID; and that time I found the Zepp Feb. 2018 Concert; and while listening to it, the last song was Choose Me, specially the 3 parts solos (introduction, the main one and the ending part) a kind of catchy ones... Then, I started listening again and again until I found B-M as my most favorite one, and even I can tell for myself, the BEST amongst all those band I've mentioned above. From that time I become obsessed with BAND-MAID. The main reason is the paradoxical complexity and simplicity of Kanami. For me, Indeed, BAND-MAID is Greater than the greatest band that ever existed. LIVE LONG AND PROSPER KANAMI... LIVE FOREVER BAND-MAID!!!

For me their newer songs (Unseen World & Unleash) took me 3-4 listens for the first time to really like and enjoy them, but for this beast "Moratorium" it was loved at first sight and always became Band-Maid no.1 top song of all time for me, with "Puzzle" and "Secret My lips" at positions no. 2 & 3.

There are only two bands I’ve been this obsessed with. Metallica in my teens and now this. I think I initially resisted Metallica too, I was a nerd and metal wasn’t real popular with my friends. I heard Band Maid in the Peacemaker playlist (not even the right band maid track either). After a few listens of Sense I started to search around. Now I know nearly every song name just hearing the first few seconds of a song. It’s been a weird journey and I love it.

Moratorium is still my favourite Band-Maid song. One of the first I heard by them. Great riff, wonderful vocals, Misa, Misa, Misa, and audience participation. It has everything! When I heard they played it in NY, I thought there was nop chance they would play it again in Boston. I almost died when the played it in Boston. Best moment ever! Thanks for discussing it Alan. Happy you like the song as well. 😃

I have lots of favourite Band-Maid songs, but Moratorium is my favourite more often than the others! Bands that you don't get into immediately but later get obsessed with? Yes, I have a few. From when I was younger, Dio stands out, or just Ronnie James Dio bands more generally. Among Japanese bands, Gacharic Spin, but that's because they were so far outside my comfort zone. I was immediately blown away by Band-Maid, but do I feel that way about a lot of their songs.

I had a similar experience with Band Maid! And Rush. (And kinda sorta Lana Del Rey a while back but that didn't last). Way back in the mid 2010s I know I watched the Thrill video and passed on it. It was shared along with a Babymetal video which I kinda blew off as a unique gimmick so in my mind I kind of lumped them together. At the time I was really into and seeking out deathcore and trancecore type stuff so despite Thrill being a really good song, it didn't register at the time. Fast forward to late 2020 and I'm on youtube (pandemic!) watching Rush reactions and Japanese language tutorials and the algorithm feeds me a Band Maid reaction. I don't even remember what song or channel at this point but it was probably Thrill. This time it caught my attention and I watched a couple more and then went to their KZfaq channel. I was ready for a head rock sound. One of the very first videos I watched that hooked me... MORATORIUM LIVE! OMG the riffs! The energy! Been obsessed ever since...

What makes me stick to japanese scenes of rock & metal since for all i can remember, they don't need drugs, very discipline, hard working but the most importantly...they enjoy their musics. Very rare they have conflict among menbers & other bands as well. Each bands in their own world...sadly, they are not that well appreciated in japan due to this type of music is not the fav there. But for the rest of the world, those who appreciates good music/instrumentalist will dig them up. There are 2 all female bands that not many knows judging from the youtube channels & very not known you should check them out too .. frantic amber & burning witches. Very talented as well!

Ya, Band Maid. Thrill didn’t hit with me and Real Existence was good but not mind blowing. the non-fiction days grabbed me by the throat. Seeing them live at J-Pop Summit was the cement. If you can go to a Band Maid live and not walk out fan, there is something really wrong.

I will always regard MORATORIUM as my first BAND MAID song. I was watching The Trogly's Guitar Show and he was reviewing a completely white Fender Telecaster (only available in Japan at the time - now for resale on Reverb) from a group called Silent Siren. So ok the guitar looks fantastic and I go to check out the group. Go to YT pull up Silent Siren go on to hear another song (never judge a band by one song!) and that's when it happened. Hit the wrong video (or the right one?!?!) and WHAM! BAND MAID MORITORIUM - never looked at another Silent Siren song and have been hooked on BAND MAID for over 4 years now. I so wanted to go to their concerts Boston and Chicago. But living in Michigan made it tough. I love all the other songs - listen to them all on Spotify - but MORATORIUM is my song.

Moratorium has been a favorite since I first heard it on YT and seeing them play it live at this show was a dream come true! I think the band that I dismissed at first but later really got into after seeing them in concert was Queensryche. Jet City Woman... Silent Lucidity... made me want to go back and give them another shot. BTW, I'd like to apologize... My voice was part of the sing-along parts of this video. It is very loud and very off key. I'll try harder next time!

Moratorium is very high up there for me as well, it's a shame that the official live performance is not on youtube so it's more difficult for people to react to it. As far as not liking a band at first goes: I wouldn't call myself obsessed with tricot, not even close, but I really disliked them the first time I heard them and I do enjoy them quite a bit now. I am looking forward to their new album that drops in December. I am bummed I missed them a couple months ago, I wasn't aware that they were playing so close to me during their European tour since I had just gotten into them.

Well, first time I heard Band-Maid was "Thrill" and I thought something along these lines: "Japanese ladies in lace doing hard-rock... nah, not for me at all" (I came from Slayer, DarkThrone, Aura Noir...etcs), so I skip them for the next few years until I stumble upon them again with "Blooming" and that "wah-wah" made me think I really should give them another closer listen... so I randomly chose like 5 or 6 songs to loop for a while and among those first songs was "REAL EXISTENCE" that got me obsessed... soon I was on a CRP just to buy every album I could in the shortest time possible (Obs.: CRP means Cigarettes Reduction Plan 😅) ... This also happened with SCANDAL... for even longer time I got SCANDAL's first album but only "Shoujo S" got into some of my playlists. Nevertheless, for some reason, I kept checking them out over and over but never clicked... never, until I heard "HARUKAZE" and I can't tell why but I just loved it... after that, I got obsessed by them as well and kept my CRP going and keep collecting SCANDAL even now (have all albums but now trying to collect the DVDs and Blurays). Even the songs that didn't click before "HARUKAZE" are already some of my favs. Absolutely love them - not as much as Band-Maid but still, have a ultra-mega-ok-crush on SCANDAL. ...and it's also good thing that I got to reduce my smoke addiction to more than half because of Band-Maid, SCANDAL and Silent Siren... so, yeah, they are good for my health at all levels!

I mean it's fine cuz not everyone is going to like it, but it's pretty awesome to see you really get into them after learning their music. The way that Sayonakidori hits you.. you can't fake that. We can really see your investment level now. Anyways, this song is amazing, thanks for the breakdowns of the riffs. Also, leave it to Kanami to weave a riff like that and a death metal riff into a song and make it catchy. 🤣

I completely understand your sentiment with being turned off on those earlier reactions, it was just something that grew on me. The album that I fell in love with, that changed everything was Unseen World and then i went back and revisited other songs. There was two other bands that did this to me also and that was Protest the Hero and Symphony X. You might be able to explain me, I always heard that tattoos were somewhat shunned in Japan like not being able to enter certain public baths with them and things like that. Is that changing or is it more accepteable for women to get them? I believe the huge back tattoos and tattoos in general are (were?) part of the Japanese underworld, but I don't know how much of what I heard is overblown or not about them not being really accepted in general.
@armynurseboy
@armynurseboy Жыл бұрын
@@MaartenT It's becoming more popular with the younger generation due to the influence from the West (where tattoos aren't looked down on as much anymore). But the older, much more conservative generation still has a very negative connotation with tattoos. It's linked to criminal elements and has been for centuries. Saiki sporting tattoos is just part of her "I don't give a F***" attitude.
