Not even maybe before 2005 that’s recorded I’ve seen him at least 12 times since that any given Thursday show and he’s been better and better each time. And as professional studio guitarist myself I wouldn’t say a best solo there is no best solo only great work. Just like comparing guitar players there’s so many goats. He’s the only guy I’ve seen in ten years that has gotten better every single year. My generation is lucky to have him. He’s also the only guy Rene Martinez wanted to work with and if you don’t know who that is 🤷🏻‍♂️
@inchskater
@inchskater 4 жыл бұрын
@@keithremedy I would agree with you regarding his versatility. But if you want to hear all out blues jams I think there were better times to see him live. I feel like he settled down a bit which is absolutely fine but might be less satisfying for some guitarists listening.

the part at 6:20 can be explained as an E minor pentatonic lick rather than D minor, the notes played exist in both scales. The chords in that particular section go from A major to E (E Major being the relative major key to C#minor). So if you're thinking of the tune in the context of E major, shifting between the E major and E minor pentatonic scale makes a lot of sense, as in blues it is common to shift between the minor and major tonalities. The E minor pentatonic sounds particularly good over the A and E major chord (it's like a IV I in the key of E)

I’ve seen both, though Mayer was this July and Clapton was over 10 years ago in May 2008. Mayer’s playing has an energy that Clapton’s just doesn’t have anymore because of his age. Both were excellent though. Great production and great playing. Was very happy with the money I paid for both.

That little minor pentatonic half step up trick is a great way to build a feel of tension before resolving....which makes a resolve to a root note or a major 3rd even sweeter. Its like it makes your ears parched and thirsty for a drink...and then you get that sonic glass of ice cold lemonade at the resolution, and it just makes it so much more satisfying.

Great stuff. I noticed many guitars hanging in background. Well done. Many people neglect to use the "hanging tune" tuning, when they store guitars in this fashion. And as a result, the frets become very fretsifonic. Just a reminder to all. Hooray and good day!

John sneaks in and out of straight pentatonic enough to be interesting. That's actually a great skill that probably about 95% of "blues players" never figure out how to do. Kenny Wayne Shepherd has yet to figure it out. I don't know that Philllip Sayce has. Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith have but most never do. Dickey Betts and Duane Allman were both great at doing it as well. They had juuuuust enough spice to sound like themselves.

I look at music as math written in an emotional language. The different kinds of scales represent different emotional feelings/equations. It's an e=mc2 type thing or timing +scale (key) = music. T + S (key) = M(e)

That position shift in «D minor» is actually just a major to minor scale switch (Emaj to E-) and not just a half-step up lick. Just try playing in E minor pentatonic and switch back to major. That's the sound. Very common in country music.

Man I really like how you didn't come at this from a place of complete infatuation with John Mayer. Don't get me wrong, I love JM too and a few years ago I was OBSESSED with his playing and chasing his tone and licks. Then I had a lightbulb moment in realizing I could never be like him and if I kept trying, all I'd ever amount to would be a much worse copy lol. I think a lot of people today forget that and are almost too fixated on copying Mayer to a tee when they should really approach his playing like you did in this video. Great stuff! 👍

I know everybody wants to constantly compare him to SRV but I find WAAAAAAY more Clapton in his sound. Obviously he's very inspired by Stevie but he has a much more "musical" approach and that's how I view Clapton. Stevie was just unbridled intensity and Clapton was much more controlled in his approach than Stevie. A song like Something Like Olivia just sounds SO much like something you'd hear on Reptile. Also I saw the vid of him playing Slow Dancing with Chris Stapleton and his tone and phrasing sound pure Clapton to me and I don't mean that in a bad way. Another great vid I seen on his approach to Slow Dancing was from that Ross Campbell guy and he really got into the applications he used for the song as well. I think that video and this video can compliment each other quite well and I'd recommend it to anyone that likes to "study" John's approach.

I agree with you Mayer may not be thinking about or in terms of correct musical theory. However over the many years he’s been playing he had enough going on to look for or listen for and find ways of musical expression. Something he feels sounds good to him, and if it can make him feel good then maybe others will too.

Great vid Thx. I'm at the stage of getting to know the geography of the fretboard - what connects to what and how to get there. I rarely play from straight feeling at this point and I can tell that this makes my solo a bit stiff (but I hope not horrible). Although I don't fully understand the theory here it is liberating to hear the dots being connected. I particularly like the phrase at 8:45 - I love the way it resolves.
