@@NoelHaven He's weirdly elitist, but also totally misses the mark on chords. at first it was sad seeing him diss m7b5... my neglected favorite, in first inversion its a beautiful m6 chord, which sounds dreamy always. but when he started hating first inversion DROP 2 MAJOR 7TH CHORDS??? LOL come on Tyler, chill out. Also how is a 2nd inversion maj7 with the 7th and the root clashing a semitone apart less dissonant? THAT is a tough chord to fit in. Then, he says that the audience needs to "expand our harmonic horizons" but also says that there is NEVER a musical use for a half diminished chord. LOL, seriously? Don't see his logic at all. this isnt even getting into how he likes a first inversion major triad, but dislikes the open c position? but isnt that just a c-shape major triad? Whats the difference?

This actually taught me that theres almost no ugly chords that exist and they all have a place in a song somewhere when you play lots of genres you can almost always find a place to put it but some chords just dont sound good with a clean tone. distortion or reverb, chorus, delay, wah, or maybe on a twelve string adding notes to a chord can always make it a more definitive interpretation of what youre trying to express with your sound

I think you're approach to the minor 7 flat 5 is misguided. In most scenarios, that chord is played for half a measure tops. I play that voicing all the time and it works just fine in those cases. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any reason I would slowly strum and play a prolonged minor 7 flat 5. The tension in that voicing lends itself well to being played short, not as an ambient chord.

"Slash didn't play this chord in the beginning of Knockin' on Heaven's Door" no, but he played that chord in the beginning of Paradise City lol. I do hate that G voicing though, it sounds bad without the 5th on the B.

At 1:00 you’ve introduced the heap paradox, you have a heap of sand and you take one grain away, it’s still a heap right? Eventually you take away all but one of the grains and you’ve got one left and it would be unsatisfactory to call that a heap, but it would also be unsatisfying to establish a point at witch it’s not a heap, the same logic is applicable here is both unsatisfactory to say there are not ugly chords and also to establish what ugly chords are

Another example is when can you call someone “bald” obviously 0 hairs on there head right? But what about 1 hair. There still bald kind of. At least they look it. What about 2. Or 3. If it ends at 3 why can’t there be 4 hairs...

I mostly play bass, but when I play a song in G major in guitar I love playing G with the 5th (D) on the 2nd string, Dsus and Cadd9. To make an otherwise boring G C D progression sound more interesting.

For the G chord, I think the open b sounds better if you're fingerpicking (so I can get the major third), but I'd definitely fret the third fret for strumming.

In jazz, we not only get rid of the fifth, we get rid of the root too and then add like a 13th or an 11th and end up turning it into a completely different chord. This is hard to master though and you can't just add whatever you want. You kind of have to look at the whole score first, make sure it doesn't clash with anything else (unless it's supposed to) and pre-plan what you're gonna play. If you're really good you can do this all on the fly by ear but I'm not that good yet

When I was learning guitar as a teen, my dad said he hated the sound of the Bm7 chord. I promptly wrote a finger style song that had it. He had to admit it was beautiful in it's context. Music and beauty are contextual.

on my mr favroites is E3-A3-D4-G5-B2-e1 requires thumb and sounds awful. But, like nay diminshed chord, allows you to change to whatever key since it can release to any chord. It releases best to a minor third maj chord down imo.
