Josh, I for one have no problem with a 'lecture' style video like this. It's very helpful and interesting to learn how things like MIDI work, especially when we use it every day without even thinking about it.

My understanding of MIDI just deepened, and I also now understand that this great little video is just an overview. I didn’t know, for example, that Pitch Bend was that finely graded. I imagined virtual orchestra instruments with much finer control than is currently available (perhaps already in MIDI 2?), but the bandwidth is already straining our most capable machines. So, maybe a combination of sampling and modeling to create much greater variety and more subtle timbral, pitch, and articulation possibilities? The progress in the the past few years is truly stunning. Eventually, I suppose, image and sound (and everything currently digital) will be produced on quantum computers. But I digress. This series is great. I check daily for the latest. Bravo!

I enjoyed it very much, yes! I thought I know a lot about MIDI, but in this module, respectively after this module I know a lot more. As I work a lot with MIDI (external and internal hardware), it’s important to know a lot about the basics of MIDI. Thanks and very much looking forward to the #37. 👍🏻👏🏻💪🏻🙏🏻

Great, glad you are going in depth on MIDI - I use almost exclusively external hardware and MIDI is key to all that. One thing I have yet to work out is how to start/stop external drum machines/sequencers at start/end of "live loop" or "region" - I can only get them to start/stop when the main Logic transport starts and stops so they always play. If I could work out how to do that, would be a game changer for my workflow

Well done! For the first time, I understand the numbers in Logic that I thought where random (like Fahrenheit vs Celsius). This video is like a mechanic that explains what’s happening under the hood. Very interesting! I always wondered why 127, or 960 (tics). I get that 127 is half of 2e8. Was it explained in 1991 why 24 became 960 (from a mathematical standpoint)
@MusicTechHelpGuy
@MusicTechHelpGuy Жыл бұрын
Glad to hear the video was a help! When MIDI 1.0 first came out it was 24 "pulses per quarter note" is what they originally called it, but now we call it "ticks". (Not exactly sure how long that term has been round). In 1991, they released an update to MIDI called General MIDI, which standardized a few things -- most notably the General MIDI Drum Kit order, it's why C1 is always kick, D1 is snare, etc. in most drum kits. It also standardized drums on MIDI channel 10 (for hardware) And they also updated the resolution to 960 ticks per beat. Why? I think was just to improve the resolution and accuracy of MIDI recordings. If you only have 24 ticks per beat, then you only have 6 positions a note can be per 16th note. If you record and quantize everything to the grid, that's fine, but if you need some more detail and "human" feel in your MIDI recordings only 6 positions per 16th note could be troublesome. Also allows for more detailed swing and quantization strength settings that allow for more variation.

@@MusicTechHelpGuy thanks for the explanation. So since a tic is a unit of the division of a quater note, or 8th, 16th, 32nd or 64th note it makes sense that the maximum number of tics can be divided by those numbers. Ex : 960/64 = 15. Whereas say 1000/64 = 15,6. Ok so I got my math fix! 😃

Extremely informative and helpful, thanks! We are switching over to Logic Pro for our livestream audio. Is there a quick way to recall different presets and fader positions for different songs on the fly? I’m thinking of a “scenes/snippets” feature found in mixers like the x32. Would midi be an appropriate use case for this? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I might touch on it when I demonstrate how to use external MIDI hardware. I'll keep it on the radar. But typically I don't really ever need to mess with it, as I can control most everything in Logic.

I'll probably have 1-2 videos on how to hook up and work with external synths. But in terms of using actual hardware synths, they are all so varied, that it would be a really niche thing to do.

Great Video as always. Is Logic able to preview midi files in the browser instead of just dragging them into a individual track.
@MusicTechHelpGuy
@MusicTechHelpGuy Жыл бұрын
On MacOS Mavericks and earlier, you used to be able to just select a .MID file and press spacebar to preview it with a generic piano sound. But for some reason they took away that feature. As a workaround you can download a free MIDI player from the App Store. I have one called "NS MIDI Player". After you download the app, control-click on a MIDI file and select "Open With" and select the MIDI Player. Then select it as the default application. This way you can press spacebar to preview the MIDI file before dragging it into Logic. The only thing that it can't do is auto-play when you press the spacebar to preview, so you still have to click a play button, but at least you can preview the MIDI.
