This video explains the difference between simple & compound time signatures ;there is also a helpful section on identifying and labelling time signature as duple, triple or quadruple.
This video is roughly equivalent to grade 3 of the associated board (ABRSM) music theory exams.

A hint to remember: The # on top for SIMPLE: 2 3 4 (goes in numerical order) The # on top for COMPOUND 3 x 2 3 & 4(the numbers for simple), meaning: 3x2 = 6 3x3 = 9 3x4 = 12 Therefore, the top # for compound will be 6 9 12 Idk if that helps in any way for you but it helped me so..

Funny I always thought that the names were only eight notes, half notes, whole notes, quarter, etc. But I just discovered today that there were breves, crotchets, quavers.... And now I'm memorizing this new concept :0 And ps, I'm pretty sure most of the musical community already knew this from early on but I've only been learning for 10 months and is currently preparing for leve 8 :( so it's definitely new to me. (Currently doing kevel5 theory tho, my theory is lacking and they required complete at least one leasc 5 test before doing levell 8)

I am with you! Even if it's simply a process of the top number being divisible into 2 groups of 3, it seems kind of pointless. Why bother having a top number of 6 or 9 or 12 if the pulse occurs every 3 beats? Why not just reduce the time signature down to top number 3?
@sueusher2255
@sueusher2255 7 жыл бұрын
The 'pulse ' or beat is a dotted crotchet in 6/8. A dotted crotchet divides into three

Very nice video here. So, regarding 6/8 time, does this mean that the quaver note, gets twice it's normal length than it would in 4/4 time (1 beat) in each bar. And the crotchet gets 2 beats in a bar rather than 1? Thank you.

Excellent video, it went a little further than other ones, but I still don't understand something... What I want to know is the reasoning for why would someone pick 6/8 or 3/8 instead of 3/4? Is there something I'm not understanding? Yes, there's two pulses in 6/8 measure and one in a 3/4 measure... but two measures of 3/4 would have the same feel as one measure in 6/8 time, right? So why is there 6/8 and 3/8, etc.?

Hi Very helpful video. Agree that 3/8 is a li'l tricky. cant really agree with the 3/8 time being explained as divisible by 2 thru semiquavers, cos if so, then each of the quavers in 6/8 time can be said as divisible by 2 (or have i overlooked sthg here). But I cant think of a better presentation than what you've done here. Good job I share the same sentiments that sometimes its best to learn and remember that 3/8 is a simple triple. Good job. Keep it up

Now hold on a sec, a Quaver is equivalent to an eighth note, so two quavers would have to represent 1 beat in 4/4. Assuming you halve the tempo, 3/4 has the same amount of quavers as 6/8 does. A quaver/eighth note doesn't get elongated, it's just that there are two less of them in 6/8 time compared to 4/4 time. The quaver itself is not made longer or shorter.

I find them all mixed up. Why can't we distribute 6/8 into three groups of 2 beats in each instead of two groups (pulses) of 3 quaver beats in each of them? Similarly 3/4 could be divided into 2 groups (pulses) with 3 beats in each of them. In case of 3/8, I wonder why we do not count the number of quaver beats i.e. 3 and take it into account as a compoud beat but sub-divide into semi-quavers and take that as 'Simple beat'. Is there a limitation to what extent the beats be divided and the number be taken into consideration?. I hope its just in the case of an anomaly(3/8).

@clinchergt
@clinchergt 8 жыл бұрын
+jimmy alderson No, that was just a way to make it simple to comprehend. In actuality it's simply convention. You could group the notes of a 6/8 bar into two beats or three beats. Since grouping into 3 would result in a simple triple, and that's already represented with 3/4, you group them in two beats, with three eighth notes each, resulting in a compound double which is how you'll be counting 6/8
