Introducing Gibson's new 2022 Faded Series featuring the J-35, the J-45, and the Hummingbird. The series has a "faded" matte finish look but with all the same specs and construction as the standard classic models we know and love. The series has a lighter satin nitrocellulose finish giving the guitars a lighter feel, more "woody" tone, and possibly more volume/punch. You be the judge… what do you think? Leave a comment.

Quinton is such a great player. He intentionally plays to bring out the full tonal range, dynamic response & compression of the guitars. That J45 is right in the sweet spot. Great finish too.

I really like this satin finish. But, the beauty of a high gloss Hummingbird is undeniable.

For a slope shoulder Gibson, I'll take the 35 over the 45, but for me I usually always prefer square shoulder dreads. I hope the pricing reflects the cost effective finishing (satin vs gloss).

Great to see that the J35 is back with an affordable price point! I have one from 2018 with a glossy top, and it is my main guitar. So far, I did not dare to take it outside because since it had been discontinued, it was hard to get it replaced in case something bad happened to it. But honestly, Quinton should not bang on it as if it was a Martin dreadnaught! This guitar is a dream for people who are interested in playing fingerstyle but still want a bigger guitar. It is very open sounding, as opposed to the warmer and woodier J45. The highs can be very mellow with a beautiful, slightly nasal tone when fingerpicked. But when strummed, it can sound a bit harsh - for this, there are better choices IMHO. The base is somehow dry. If you have not (perfectly) mastered palm muting in Travis picking yet, you can still get a fairly punchy base out of it. The Gibson coated phosphor bronze strings are not the best choice for a J35, too warm. I think Elixirs accentuate the characteristic of the J35 better. I hope Gibson will keep it in production for good. The name J35 indicates that it was something lesser than a J45 which is not true at all. So, the salespersons will have to work for this guitar a bit. They need to know where this guitar excels and what kind of customers might be interested in it.

It is really funny seeing those comments ‘but it is not just a Martin’. I must say that I was in the past more disappointed by a Martin that came through my door than by a Gibson. The factory setup from Martin is often a nuisance with its constantly to high action or in one case the high E string on a D41 simply was too close to the edge of the fretboard. For Martin like guitars I probably would prefer one of the strong boutique brands (Collings, Bourgeois etc.). However haven’t had from those brands an as-good-as take on a Gibson. It almost seems that they put in Bozeman some secret sauce into the build of these instruments. Just play a J 185 and will know what I mean.

That burst is nasty. They can keep the electronics too. I don’t see the appeal comparing this J-45 to the standard, when the standard is only $350 more and looks way better. Why not just do the satin finish on the actual nice sunburst?

Yea, I got that, but considering they are factory new, with bright new strings maybe that's understandable. Interestingly, Gibsons (unlike Taylors) are not known for their brightness, more their warmth, although these guitars will soon mellow. A new sound from Gibson?

Quinton was playing close to the bridge, which brightens the sound and adds projection. You can warm up the sound if you like by playing further away from the bridge, over the sound hole. I thought all three sounded good in this video. I've played a few J45s in shops recently, and I was surprised by how good they sound in person.
