MUST DO Adirondack Canoe Trip: Floodwood to Fish Creek to Rollins Pond

Join Barb and I as we canoe the popular Fish Creek to Rollins Pond to Floodwood Pond loop located in New York's beautiful Adirondacks Mountains. We consider this one of the very best places to canoe in the Adirondacks. We start at campsite 58 in Fish Creek Pond Campground and paddle upstream to Copperas Pond where we then portage our boats .33 miles through the woods to Whey Pond. From Whey we canoe over to Rollins Pond and then on to Floodwood Pond. Our favorite New York State paddle starts here as we let the gentle current of Fish Creek carry us through the peaceful Adirondack forest. after 4 hours out on the water Fish Creek leads us back to our campsite. This is a popular paddle for those camping at Fish Creek Pond and Rollins Pond State campgrounds.... but these waters are easily accessible from Floodwood Road just north of the campgrounds as well.

I'm paddling a Placid Boatworks Rapidfire and my wife is paddling a Swift Cruiser 12.8 which are ultralight solo canoes.
Previously... we've done this paddle in 3 hours when paddling vigorously.... and we've done it in 6 hours when enjoying swims and having a picnic along the way. This particular day took us 4 hours...plan accordingly.

@@robertbraun6827 the surface waters are pretty warm.... Flood wood and Rollins get a lot colder the deeper you go.

I can't think of a better way to spend a day than canoeing down a beautiful river with amazing scenery and sharing that time with the wife. That's about as good as it gets.

I have made this trip several times, but have never camped there. I always go on my paddleboard, but in 2024, I will buy a canoe so I can stay there for a couple of nights. Thanks for sharing this great video.

That beaver dam made things difficult for my son and I last May. Been down through there many times without a problem before that.

Thanks for the feedback. I often get people telling me they love the silent videos... but then others say they like it when I/we talk more. I think in 2023 we will have a better mix of silent videos and videos with dialogue. We have several ambitious adventures planned that will definitely require us to talk more to explain the route and challenges we face. Thanks again for the helpful comment.

Nice video. We will be there in Sept on C loop. While watching your video I noticed the area just north of the boat launch where there's been down trees that have been a little work to squeeze through. In your video it looks like someone cut away the tree and opened it up? We have a new Crescent Crew 2 person kayak that's a big boy. We were concerned whether we would be able to get through it in the bigger kayak. If someone did open it up that's awesome.

You'll be able to get through. The DEC goes through from time to time and opens up blocked waterways. We actually got out of our boats and removed some more branches at that spot too. The water is shallow there so no worries. Enjoy your trip in September.... the best time to be there imo.

@@CanoeCampClimb Yea we go every Sept for the fall foliage and lots of hiking. We are tenters though. It can get cold at night. We are trying C loop for the first time to try and get less wind off the lake. .

Greetings Igor. We used to kayak but much prefer the light weight pack canoes you see in our videos. For us the main reasons are they are so light they are easier to carry from pond to pond. The seats are super comfortable... and I like having my legs exposed to the sun and air and having the ability to dangle my feet over the edge and into the water. We usually just launch from Rollins because of all the gear we have makes it too difficult to portage.

I hear you. We used to have 65lb kayaks we’d take on this trip. What a workout. These lightweight canoes weigh between 22 and 25 lbs making the trip a lot easier for us

As a general rule of thumb black fly season is from Mother's Day to Father's Day. Then it is the mosquitoes and horse flies from father's day to about mid August. After that it is glorious. That being said.... the sites at this campground generally have a nice breeze coming off the pond and help keep the bugs manageable. Black flies in particular are very hit or miss.

what is that webbing portage yoke that I see on Barb's canoe starting around 2:14?

Hey Kevin. That is a fabric portage yoke that Joe sell's at Placid Boatworks. It is super lightweight and comes with a small bag that attaches to the thwart behind the seat. It simply uses a velcro system to attach. Barb generally uses it on any carries over a 1/4 mile. I have one and don't use it much.... only because I prefer to just throw the boat on my shoulder. But it is a nice product for anyone with neck or shoulder issues.
