Canoe Camping Alone in the Adirondack wilderness. On day 1 as I traverse through the heart of the Saint Regis Canoe Wilderness... the only designated canoe area in New York State and a very special protected area. I start at Upper Saint Regis Lake and make my way into Bog Pond, Bear Pond, Little Long Pond East, Green Pond, Saint Regis Pond, Ochre Pond, Mud Pond... and finally Fish Pond. Yeah... quite a hard ass day... as I had to carry my 15 ft canoe several miles in rugged terrain carrying a 110 liter backpack. Thankfully my Placid Boatworks Rapidfire was made for this kind of adventure as it is made of carbon fiber and kevlar and very light weight. I hope you'll join me for day 2.
* IMPORTANT NOTE ON DRONE USE*
Before launching a drone be aware of the FAA rules on usage and restrictions. The Adirondacks also have their own set of rules regarding drone use. You are not allowed to launch and operate a drone from within the Saint Regis Canoe Wilderness. My shots were taken outside the no-fly boundary and the drone kept within my line of sight. Outside of the technical rules... and as a basic human courtesy... I also take special care to make sure I am not interrupting anyone's camping or nature experience. If people are around in these peaceful places... the drone stays grounded. Below are links to help you fly legally:

When Henry David Thurueu did the tough portages, he said it built character. And in JFKS going to the Moon speech, we don't do these things because they are easy,but because they are hard. I believe that's the cornerstone to paddle to a remote pond or a climb a 46er.

Amazing! My late father and I camped in this area well over 40 years ago. I’m heading back solo all the way from Southeast Georgia this June, staying at Eighth Lake Campground, but planning on heading up to St. Regis for a couple nights. I’m bringing his old Grumman Canoe which I spent many hours in, and I cannot wait.

@@NotSoEpicAdventurer It's been tough to get out for canoe trips this year. In the Spring we bought property bordering the Saint Regis Canoe Area....and we have been working on the land and converting an old barn into a cabin. So I had to sacrifice all the great trips we had planned. On the flip side... next paddling season should be amazing since we will be located right in the middle of canoe heaven. But still.... This Bill's bag is 30 years old. I borrowed it from a friend who's father used it in his backcountry guiding business. It has held up pretty darn well. I just got a new Bill's bag and hope it is built as well as this old red one. How old was your pack? Major bummer it delaminated. Maybe NRS will replace it for free?

I'm lucky enough to have a few boats...the pride of the fleet is a OT Pack Solocane. It's a treasure and I've owned it 15 years and canoes, camped, and fished out of as my primary boat for most all that time. 33 lbs and can carry up to 500+. I also love my decades old LL Bean Bean boots. Your channel is filled with tons of amazing goodness and this video is awesome. Thank you for the escape you provide us!

@@CanoeCampClimb you are very kind, thank you. You're also a great story teller thru your videos. I was born in Rochester, and we moved a continent away when I was very young. The first memory of being in a canoe was in the Grass River at about 10 between my dad and an uncle. They grew up canoeing and fishing upper NY state. I remember gliding over the beautiful water and the swaying grass in the river current. I also remember the pike that scared the crap out of me when it ate my smallmouth I was bringing up to the canoe that day. I think the men laughed at that memory for many years. It was so special I asked for a canoe immediately. By that time we had moved to Arkansas and I spent many special times learning to paddle, fish and just enjoy being in a canoe. It was as magical to me to glide thru the water as a bicycle could move me at will on land. I was hooked. I'm 55 now and (mostly) Harleys and canoes have filled my free time...even got our kids into canoeing as well. Like you in this video, I'm mostly using a double blade paddle...but isn't there something just crazy special about a nice, handmade beavertail slipping thru the water on a misty morning! I'll watch a bunch of your vids in the future for sure. Have a great rest of the holiday weekend. 👊

How the he'll you gonna throw a $500+ paddle like that man? Lol love the route. Tried it this year. We ended up not doing ochre to mud and took the road instead. My buddies 70 pound kayak did not help matters

Lol. When I first got that paddle I babied it. Now I use it as a bushwhack machete. haha. I am not easy on equipment. I use it. I break it. It gets fixed. I use it. I break it... you get the idea. haha. Doing Mud Pond certainly added a higher level of difficulty to the trip... and I wouldn't want to do it with a 70lb kayak. Your buddy must be a beast to get that boat way out there.

Can I ask what boots you used for this very muddy trip? I usually paddle in crocs and carry in hiking boots but that sounds like a bad idea for this kind of trip. Thanks and love your videos.

Hi Devin. It is a Placid Boatworks Rapidfire. Very light... made of carbon fiber and Kevlar. Best investment I've made as far as paddling and canoe camping goes. Nice video. Can ask your size (height and weight) … I am looking at a Rapidfire. I am 6 ft 218 lbs. … thinking the Rapidfire may be a bit small for my size? Also what is your seat height setting ( low, medium or high) ?

Hi Mike. Sure thing. I am 6'3" 225lbs give or take a cheeseburger or two. The Rapidfire handles me perfectly. I just got back from a very snowy canoe camping trip where I hauled in a bunch of hardwood to burn along with all my cold weather camping gear and the boat easily held it all. I will say the boat handles superb when it is loaded up. I'd say the Rapid would be perfect for you... you'll have no regrets.

I forgot to answer you seat height question..... I originally had a low seat... which I loved for the ultimate comfort and stability... but went to a mid seat because it puts me in a slightly more athletic position to use my core and paddle with more power. You can try all 3 seats at Placid Boatworks... and Joe can install the seat pretty much last minute on pickup day.

@@CanoeCampClimb thanks so the quick comeback. Will have to take a serious look at a Rapidfire. I do 10 day to 2 week trips to Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario. I am loaded with 2 packs including fishing gear. So packability is my only concern.

@@mikeporter2563 gotcha. The next size up is the Shadow if you feel you need more room. The Shadow is 16ft and minimally heavier. I find the Rapidfire is the perfect balance of length for great speed and tracking... but also allows me to maneuver in tight twisty creeks... as well as being able to do the carry's/portages ion tight spots pretty easily too. Either way you can't go wrong.

I haven't been on Bear pond in decades, but it used to have an unusually clear swimming pool blue water. Very different from surrounding ponds. Is it still like that?

Hey Daniel. The color looked pretty typical.. nothing unusual compared to the other ponds. Perhaps it was because of the time of year that I paddled through... there was a lot of leaf litter, etc. I will be sure to check it out again when I paddle it during the summer next year.. and I'll let you know.

Hey Nicholas. I hear you. The long carries aren't for everyone. For me I actually enjoy them a lot as it gets me out of the saddle to stretch my legs and mix things up. I am an Adirondack 46er and an avid hiker.... so hiking is in my blood. The more portages the less people. I like people... but I also like the solitude from time to time.
