We spend 2 days hiking in the Mt Baker Wilderness area which offers incredibly rugged, beautiful and dramatic mountain views!
After some research we find that this area has SO many compelling hike options and after much deliberation and narrowing it down, we pick 2 short, afternoon hikes we are very excited for!
Day 1
We start with the Winchester Mountain Trail. This is a 4 mile round trip hike with roughly 1,300 feet of elevation gain. It is said to have one of the greatest rewards for the least amount of effort in the North Cascades. What's the catch you might ask? Well, the road to get there.
Unfortunately part of the road to get to the trailhead is not paved and is in pretty rough condition. A 4x4, high clearance vehicle is recommended and after our flat tire in North Cascades National Park, we err on the side of caution and park about 2 miles away from the trailhead.
So while we turn this 4 mile hike into an 8 mile hike, we have confidence it will still be worth it. Once we make it to the official trailhead, the hike begins between a pair of mile-high sub-alpine lakes. It switchbacks through blueberry bushes and there are already amazing views from the start that just get better and better as we climb.
It is an efficient trail and we make it to the top in .........
One of the last fire-lookouts in the region stands on the 6,521-foot summit. From the top, there are 360 degree views that are beautiful and dramatic to say the least.
Day 2
The next day we get started at Artist Point. There are a lot of hikes to choose from in this area and we make the short, 2.8 mile hike up to Table Mountain. It has around 700 feet of elevation gain, most of which is in the first section.
The trail starts with steep switchbacks (that are pretty exposed) but in a matter of 15 or so minutes, we make it up to the ridge. We follow along up and down the ridge until we make it to the peak.
Yesterday's hike was amazing to say the least, but the views from Table Mountain certainly rival it! From the summit, Mt Baker is SO CLOSE! There is also an awesome view of Shuksan and the weather is so clear today, we can see all the way to Mt Rainier.
We enjoy the views for a bit and then head back down to the parking lot because there is another spot we want to check out for sunset.
From Artist Point, we hike around 0.5 miles to Huntoon Point. This viewpoint gets us closer to Shuksan but also has a great view of Baker. We watch the sky put on a show as the sun sets behind Mount Baker. It really is the perfect way to end the day!

How cool! I camped in Winchester this summer (while the shutters where still up) and it was amazing! That was before I had started posting videos, but my first video on here is of another lookout! They're true gems of WA

Ahh yes, my backyard. I am blessed to live right there for sure. Great video! FYI Flying drones in Wilderness areas is illegal and very expensive when they catch up to you. I know the Chief Wilderness Ranger for the that area and they will ticket you. Also the FAA is starting to crack down on YT creators, as they are considered "Compensated". Some folk have received huge fines. Otherwise great video. Glad you had great weather!

You are SO lucky to live in such a beautiful place.. we loved our time in Washington, it seems like there are endless hiking opportunities there! Thanks for the info on the drone! We definitely knew that it's a big no no to fly the drone in the National Parks... we were still learning about some of the restrictions within the wilderness areas though. We certainly try our best to follow the rules. Thanks for letting us know!!

@@WaypointofView no problem. I am currently working on my commercial drone pilots license. This will keep the FAA off my back when I post drone footage. Its getting more and more restrictive these days with more people flying.

The movie Dear Hunter was filmed in that same location 20 steps from the parking lot, also the ski area just north of Mt Shuksan in 1998-99 set the world record snow depth in one season at 1140” (95 feet), fresh powder turns every day

What are your thoughts on Mt Baker vs Mt Rainier? I will be visiting Washington in a few months and would like to see both, but will only have time for one.
@WaypointofView
@WaypointofView 3 жыл бұрын
Ahh I wish I had some thoughts for you but we only tried to do one hike in Mount Rainier NP and it was completely clouded in... so much so we couldn't see but 50 feet in front of us and we stopped our hike early. 😕 That said... it does seem amazing. We really loved the Mount Baker area though and in general we found any of the wilderness areas to be much quieter than the National parks. How long do you have in WA? If you go up towards Mount Baker you could combine with North Cascades NP which was AMAZING!! Either way, I really don't think you can go wrong!

@@WaypointofView Thanks a lot for the input your videos are great. Unfortunately we will only have 4 full days in Washington, and would like to spend a few of those days in Olympic. North Cascades looks great too, we are hoping to also spend a day there doing an alpine lake hike or maybe cascade pass if we have time. We like alpine lakes and also like to avoid the crowds so leaning towards the North Cascade / Mt Baker area, but hard to pass up Mt Rainier for how big of a mountain it is. So much to see so little time. Might have to request more time off or quit my job like you guys

Northwest Forest Pass is needed for many areas in the North Cascades, Central Cascades to park at the trailheads without being subject to a fine. They are available for the day or a yearly pass your choice.
