In the northeast the rust can really change how certain jobs go. In this case removing a brake drum can be a real pain. Using a puller can be a real game changer.

I understand the big shoe goes towards the back. But why?
@danielbutler578
@danielbutler578 Жыл бұрын
It's because the primary or front brake shoe puts rotational pressure on the secondary shoe when you apply the brakes going forward. This means that the secondary shoe wears more than the primary shoe. To decrease the wear on the secondary shoe the friction material is longer so that the pressure is distributed over a larger area which decreases the pressure per square inch. If you put them on backwards the smaller shoe will wear out much sooner than the larger one. Does that make sense to you? If not then don't worry too much about it. I've seen mechanics with 20 years of experience that would stick the brake shoes on backward on every job. What makes that so funny is that they think it's normal for the back shoe to be worn completely out when the front one was barely showing any wear. I had one that was getting angry with me for doing the brake on my own car because he thought I was doing it wrong. I ended up telling him to shut up and leave me alone. I actually had him read the instructions out of the repair manual and he still insisted that I was wrong because he had been doing brake jobs when I was still in diapers. I had to threaten to apply a jack handle to his head if he didn't get out of my yard just to get him to stop trying to take apart what I was putting together. I suddenly realized why he did so many brake jobs.

I have a 3 jaw puller that I use for this (The 'ol Harbor freight), being a shadetree and not professional.... I've used it maybe 2 times and now all the vehicles I work on in the family have discs in the back so now it sits. That being said, when I needed it, it was handy to have and a godsend because that back drum wasn't coming off any other way. Ohio winters (northwestern) can be brutal; the city thinks it prudent to dump at least a 40 lb bag of salt on EVERY street first sight of a decent snow.

I have a 1-in version of that to pull the caps off my beer bottles. It saves a lot of time and beating with a hammer but man that inch and a half air chisel is hard to get in there and operate. The tweezers won't stay on the trigger. It only gets harder the more caps you remove cuz after you do one you got to drink a cold one, it's such hard work.

I was raised in the upper peninsula of Michigan and worked in independent garages and dealerships. Rusty cars were the norm. You'll find this method of Rusty drum removal noisy, but not for very long. We used to take a 2 pound hammer to smack the outer edge off the drum right where the face starts to roll towards the backside of the drum 3-4 times good and hard. It will flex the thinner steal where the drum slips over the axle. This breaks the rust loose and it usually jumps right off. ( This is not striking the drum from the backside )

I 'inherited on of these decades ago from a eledely neighbour. I never realised what it was for. And yes I have beat on drums often trying to get them off. Riveted linings? In 2022? Here in Oz seldom even see recon old shoes which for the most part have been bonded for well over 50 years. On [historic] race cars we have them bonded as well as rivets on the ends. They see extreme heat with material that will take the heat but on occasion they do lift, hence the rivets.

I ended up buying the OTC 6980 Heavy Duty Brake Drum and Rotor Puller late last year (a bit cheaper) and it even came with a ratcheting strap to put around the puller to prevent the clamps from popping off under tension. It was a bit cheaper when I got it ($114.99) its now $133.00! This tool is awesome! My drums on my 22ish yr old 98' Camry were also rust jacked around the hub. That POP sound of the puller breaking away the rust bond scared the hell outta me but also put a smile on face! I wouldn't recommend using an impact gun tbh. You can use it to snug up the bolt and put tension on the drum but use a 1/2 rachet to finish the removable because it can get gnarly on ya quick!

As the adage states, you need to spend money to make money. Very informational video as always, thank you.

This tool would've came in handy a few weeks ago. Was trying to change the drums and shoes on my brother's 02 escape. That mother lover was frozen solid. Took turns with the sledgehammer. Had to replace all the hardware but we got it off. Funny enough, the other side slid off with one small tap.

I use the the kit that has the whole ball game for doing hub bearings and such. The bearing race puller that it comes with it is about useless. Usually take the mini wheel to the race. Cut diagonal until it gets hot. Tap it with a chisel and off it comes. Didn't think to use that part of the kit for drums. Thanks.

I actually use it for busting loose an outer tire rod end cause if you pay attention it won't pinch the boot.

Reminds me of sitting in the hot Australian sun about 5 years ago trying to get drums off for the first time in 20 years!
