very nice. I play mandolin, which is a sassy percussive instrument. I'm trying to incorporate funk in my playing. Your rhythm discussion and examples really help me. And the left hand being integrated with what the right hand is doing rhythmically. The extended chords on a mando, tuned in fifths, is a challenge -- four courses and often not enough notes available. But sometimes two or three note voicings get the idea. I gotta find the right ones though! But thanks for this, it makes a lot of sense.

Funk guitar is a lot harder than it seems. You need great rhythm and grooves and also a very good, relaxed technique if you wanna be able to play solid 10-minute funk jams, especially if you have a fast tempo going on. So yeah, funk guitar is a serious business.

I guess the hand tapping is just showing the16th note accents ( 1 e and a 2 e and a...) in the bar and helps to feel the rhthym. Feel the synchopation. When applying to the fret board it is just the fretting hand which determines where you play the accent...finger pressure on chord and by the muting technique.

You sir are a great guitarist .l am strictly average.when playing funk i tend not to use a plec or if i do a very thin one.on other slower styles i prefer around .80 plecs.i find the nails give more speedy controlled rythmns .i need more controlled strum patterns as i go in and out with the strumming.should i be using a plec to improve this style.cheers for the lessons.

Tomo-san, can you cover mutes, strums and skipped strums? Also, how do you count the rhythm and stay in time.

Hello Tomo, how you doing? So, Im practicing the level two (the tapping part). I'm with a little doubt about the accentuation in time. For the accentuation in two, the second tap needs to have to be in the first beat of the metronome? Thanks for the lessons :)

Thank you, this is very useful. Any suggestions for how to strum the Bm7 chord cleanly? I have difficulty fretting the G string and I've tried pressing harder and changing my position but it's very difficult.

Hi, I like your passion. Could you explain why I should use my middle finger for muting instead of lifting all fingers a bit? As the Bm7 chord is bar-chord, I would still mute all strings. Or doesn't it make any difference?

I think the logic (especially for the Bm7) is that using the 3rd finger assures that no harmonics would sound out from the 7th fret.

You don't recommend using reverb during a gig when funk strumming, or just during practicing this to better isolate the strumming technique?
