My Great Loop journey included a trip about halfway down the Erie Canal. This video covers my trip from Waterford, NY through the first five locks on the canal itself. It's long because it's a slow-go, especially when you're behind (or locking with) a slow boat that isn't even sure it can make it under bridges. I fast-forwarded through the locking part. I used my "mast cam" and "face cam" setups for this video, including my improved microphone setup so you can actually hear what I'm saying when I talk. Your comments, likes, subscriptions, and shares are appreciated.

That's the way it is in the locks, nose to tail

Thanks again Maria for another wonderful video! Looks like "patience" is the word of the day when working the locks and neighboring vessels!

That’s it in a nutshell. There’s nothing fast about locking. And it’s even slower and more laid back in Canada - but somehow a bit more pleasant, too.

Great video and fantastic footage of the canals. Thanks for sharing this. I think Journey could have gotten under that first bridge 😂. Better safe than sorry though ... no one wants to end up on Qualified Captain!

I’m not sure how much they managed to lower the water forJourney. I know that another boat I was traveling with on the Champlain Canal needed a section of that canal lowered and was told that it would take a few hours. So maybe Journey did squeeze under without a water level change. Journey had a hard top and it would’ve been very damaging to hit the bridge. Later the same day I was behind Journey when we came upon another low bridge. He did the same thing - slow down to a stop - and I was lucky enough to be able to go around him under another span of the bridge. That’s where I left him behind. He wound up passing us when we were stopped for the night.

Yeah Maria That's one thing nice about hydrologic thrusters. He can stand on them all day, not going to hurt them.

That might be true but things can go wrong. I lost my Stern thruster the other day in the Trent-Severn waterway. Apparently something got into the protective covering and when I used the thruster I stripped all the blades off the prop in there. 😳 It’s been nearly a week and I’m still waiting for the part and repair. I’ve gotten very good at doing locks without a stern thruster, though.🤣

I have enjoyed by (I think) all of your helicopter videos, especially Nick on the Rocks. I'm glad I stumbled on this other channel. Are you between seasons for helicopter agricultural work?

I’m retired now. I still have lots of helicopter footage and when I have some spare time at home, I’ll likely put together a few more videos for the channel. I was really hoping to get channel subscriber count up to 100,000 there but at this point it doesn’t look likely.

How different would single handling the loop be with two engines? More control worth the extra maintenance?
@MariaLanger

Having two engines pretty much makes thrusters unnecessary - at least for askilled captain. But you’re using about twice as much fuel and have twice as much maintenance. I personally have no desire for a twin engine boat. Of course, once a boat gets to a certain size, it needs two engines for propulsion. I also don’t want a boat that big. Bigger boats are more costly to park, because they charge by the foot, and they are limited and where they can go. A good example is the boat that went through the locks with me at Waterford, Journey. That’s a huge boat - nearly twice the length of mine - and its air draft alone causes problems when getting under bridges. Smaller and simpler is better for any kind of solo boating or boating with passive passengers.

My dogs are Lily and Rosie. They are sisters. Rescued. Probably chihuahua-Yorkshire terrier mix.
